    Make Stress Work for You

Stress can come from all directions. We live in a world filled with stress. Rather than only looking for ways to change the stress-filled situations, look for stress that can work for you. The following are suggestions to make stress work in your favor.

1    . Colors of the walls, floor coverings, and furniture can reduce stress. Cooling greens and blues are positive colors that can reduce stress and create a sense of well-being.

2    . Take time to recognize signs of stress like anger, work and sleep habits. As you understand these signs, you are beginning to know how to make stress work.

3  . We can accept what we cannot change by changing what we can. Make choices that are realistic, not beyond your ability.

4   . Find out what your strengths are and focus on taking the time to do a project built on them. If you take on too many projects, you will most probably lose control and meet with new stress.

5  . Laughing at oneself can bring less stress from the inside. And laughing creates less wrinkles皱纹than worrying.

    A. Stop and look at yourself

    B. Don’t say yes to everything

    C. Accept what cannot be changed

    D. Create environments that reduce stress

    E. Develop a sense of humour

    F. Leave time for the unexpected

  • 25、I made a decision on the way down to the vacation beach cottage to meet my family. For two weeks, I would try to be a loving husband and father. Totally loving. No ifs, ands or buts.

The idea had come to me as I listened to a talk on my car radio. The speaker was reading a Biblical about husbands’ being thoughtful of their wives. Then he went on to say, “Love is an act of will. A person can choose to love.” To myself, I had to say that I had been a selfish husband. Well, for two weeks that would change.

And it did. Right from the moment I kissed Mary at the door and said, “That new yellow sweater looks great on you.”

“Oh, Tom, you noticed,” she said, surprised and pleased. Maybe a little confused(困惑). After the long drive, I wanted to sit and read. Mary suggested a walk on the beach. I started to refuse, but then I thought, “Mary’s been here with the kid all week and now she wants to be alone with me.” We walked on the beach while the children flew their kites.

So it went. Two weeks of not calling the company where I am a manager, and a visit to the shell museum though I usually hate museums. Relaxed and happy, that is how the whole vacation passed. I made a new decision to keep on remembering to choose love.

There was one thing that went wrong with my experiment, however. Mary and I still laugh about it today. On the last night at our cottage, preparing for bed, Mary looked at me with the saddest expression.

“What’s the matter?” I asked her.

“Tom,” she said in a voice filled with sadness, “Do you know something I don’t …”

    “What do you mean? ”

“Well…that checkup I had several weeks ago…our doctor…did he tell you something about me? Tom, you’ve been so good to me…am I dying?”

It took a moment for it all to sink in. Then I couldn’t help laughing.

“No, honey,” I said, holding her in my arms. “You’re not dying; I’m just starting to live.”

1In the first paragraph, “No ifs, ands or buts” probably mean ____________.

    A. probably   B. completely   C. impossibly   D. unimportantly

2From the story we may infer that Tom drove to the beach cottage ____________.

    A. alone   B. with his family   C. with Mary   D. with his children

    A. the doctor told him Mary was seriously ill

    B. she looked beautiful in her new clothes

    C. he made up his mind to be a good husband

    D. he made a lot of money as a manager

4What made Tom change his mind to be with his family more?

    A. His wife’s illness.   B. His vacation to the beach.

    C. A talk on his car radio.   D. His achievement from his job.

5By saying “I am just starting to live,” Tom means that ____________.

    A. he is beginning to feel sorry for what he did to his wife before

    B. he lived an unhappy life before and is now starting to change

    C. he is just beginning to understand the real meaning of life

    D. he is just beginning to enjoy life as a loving husband

  • 26、   The sight of a tailor-shop gave me a strong wish to throw off my old clothes and get a new suit. Could I afford it? No, I had nothing in the world but a million-pound note. So I forced myself to go on by. But soon I was drawing back again. The temptation troubled me a lot. I must have passed that shop six times during that struggle. At last I gave in, I had to. I asked if they had a cheap suit. The fellow I spoke to made no answer at first, looked me up and down, noticed that I was almost in rags(衣衫褴褛), then said, “Just a minute.”

I waited till he had finished his work. Then he took me into a back room to choose a cheapest suit for me. I put it on. It didn’t fit, but it was new and I was anxious to have it, so I said shyly:

“Could you wait a few days for the money? I haven’t any small change on me.”

The fellow looked at me coldly and said, “Oh, you haven’t. Well, of course, I know that gentlemen like you carry only large notes(支票)”.

I was angry, and said, “My friend, you shouldn't judge a stranger always by the clothes he wears. I am quite able to pay for this suit. I simply didn't wish to put you to the trouble of changing a large note. ” “Why do you think we can’t change your note? Instead, we can.”

I handed the note to him and said: “Oh, very well, I am sorry.”

He received it with a smile, and then as he looked at the note, his smile froze.

Realizing what was going on, the owner of the shop gave a low whistle and talked excitedly, as if to himself.

“To sell such a suit as that to a millionaire! Tod’s a fool. Please get those clothes off, sir. Wait till you see what we’ll make for you to your own measure.”

Before I could get in a word he had measured me, and was giving orders for evening suits, morning suits, shirts and all sorts of things.

1The underlined word “temptation” in paragraph 1 has the same meaning with ________.

    A.attraction B.happiness C.anger D.attention

2What can be inferred (推断)from the passage?

    B.Gentlemen always carried large notes.

C.The note the author carried was too large to change.

D.The shop owner recognized the author was a millionaire at the first sight..

3Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.The author liked the suit very much and decided to have it.

B.Both Tod and the owner of the shop welcomed the author warmly.

C.The author was looked down upon because of the clothes he wore.

D.The author couldn’t have any new suit because he had no small change.

4What does the passage mainly tell us?

A.No pains, no gains. B.Never forget to say thanks.

C.A bad beginning makes a bad ending. D.Never judge a person just by his appearance.
