Last month, we did a survey about the ways of transportation in Sunshine Community. Here are the results.
The most popular choices are cars and buses.
Twenty-five percent of residents(居民)choose cars while thirty percent choose buses. Most office staff go to work by car. 1.In their opinion, cars are not only fast but also comfortable. The survey mentions that buses are mainly chosen by students in Sunshine Community. As for everyone in our city, there are about 42 bus lines running from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
We found that twenty-five percent prefer to go outside by bike or on foot. 2.Going out by bike costs nothing and it is good for residents’ bodies. The old people are used to buying daily things near the community, so they would like to go to the local market on foot.
3.另外的20%选择摩托车或出租车。Motorbikes may be dangerous, but some still think travelling by motorbike is the best way to avoid traffic jams(堵塞) in rush hours. Speaking of taxis, those residents without private cars are willing to take a taxi when they are in a hurry.
4.With the development of transportation in Yueyang, people can get here and there more easily. However, some residents say they still meet plenty of traffic problems in their daily life.

21、When asked who invented (发明) the microchip (芯片), you may be surprised that two men invented almost the same thing—the integrated circuit (集成电路) at nearly the same time. But they didn’t even know what each other was working on.
They were US engineers Jack Kilby (1923-2005) and Robert Noyce (1927-1990). From 1958 to 1959, both of them were working on an answer to the same question: how to make more of less.
In designing an electronic (电子的) machine like a computer, it is always necessary to increase (增加) the number of components (组件). However, as there are more components, the machines will be big and heavy. How to include these components in a better way was the problem they wanted to solve with microchips.
Kilby found out that, instead of joining different components together, an entire (整体的) electronic assembly (集成) could be made as one unit. He made the first microchip in history in 1958 and successfully published (发布) it in September 1959. At the same time, Noyce also succeeded in doing this. Differently, Kilby used germanium (锗) to make his microchip while Noyce used silicon (硅).
Soon, both of them applied for patents (申请专利). But who would get the credit (功劳)?
The answer was both of them. The courts gave Kilby credit for the idea of the integrated circuit. They gave Noyce the patent for his planar manufacturing process (平面制造工艺), a way for evaporating (挥发) lines of conductive metal directly onto a silicon chip.
【1】What do we know about Jack Kilby and Robert Noyce?
A.They wanted to find out who invented the microchip.
B.They went to the US to study microchips together.
C.Both of them were the inventors of the integrated circuit.
【2】According to Paragraph 3, microchips make it possible to _______.
A.make electronic machines small and light
B.connect (连接) different components quickly
C.increase the number of components
【3】Which of the following is true about the first microchip in history?
A.It was made in 1959.
B.It was made from germanium.
C.It was made by Noyce.
【4】What did Noyce get a patent for?
A.The idea of the integrated circuit.
B.His silicon chip.
C.His planar manufacturing process.
【5】What’s the best title of the passage?
A.Microchips Are Useful
B.Microchips Start from Here
C.How Microchips Work
22、Dogs can help first-year university students treat homesickness, according to a new UBC study. The study shows that animal-assisted therapy (动物辅助治疗) can help students treat homesickness and could be a useful tool in lowering post-secondary drop-out rates (辍学率).
“Transitioning (转变) from high school to university proves to be a challenge for many first-year students,” says Professor John Tyler Binfet of UBC. “Since students who experience homesickness are more likely than their non-homesick schoolmates to drop out of university, universities should support students during their first year.”
In the study, 44 first-year university students who were homesick were given a survey to measure levels of homesickness, satisfaction with life and connectedness (关联) with campus. Half of the students completed eight weeks of dog therapy, while the other half were told to take the therapy eight weeks later. Dog therapy included 45-minute weekly gatherings, like group activities with the dogs and their trainers, and meeting other first-year students participating (参与) in the study. After eight weeks, participants in both the treatment group and the non-treatment group completed the survey again.
Participants who completed the eight-week program were less homesick and more satisfied with school life. They reported that during the therapy they felt like they were at home talking with friends who brought their dogs. However, the non-treatment group reported an increase in their feelings of homesickness.
“Moving to a new city, I did not know anyone at the university and became very homesick,” said Varenka Kim, a student who took part in the eight-week therapy. “I stayed in my room and didn’t feel like I belonged here. Having dog therapy every Friday gave me a sense of purpose and I stayed positive about life.”
According to a 2009 study, 29 percent of students who dropped out of school believed that more communication and friendships with other students would have influenced their decision to stay longer.
“While further study is needed, a university’s ability to influence campus connections could be a useful tool in lowering drop-out rates in first-year students,” says Binfet. “Many first-year university students face the challenge of fitting into their new campus community,” he says. “Homesick students are three times more likely than those who manage their homesickness to drop out of university.”
【1】Paragraph 4 is mainly about ________.
A.the steps of the study
B.the findings of the study
C.the difficulties in the study
D.the tools used in the study

B.To explain the reason why he took part in dog therapy.
C.To encourage us to make more friends at the university.
D.To show dog therapy helped him go through homesickness.

C.Animal-assisted therapy can help students fit into new college life.
D.Playing with dogs influences students’ relationships with their family.
