Do you have a “tiger mother”?

Many Chinese mothers are afraid that their children will fall behind their classmates, so those mothers are becoming “tiger mothers”. They believe the harder their children study, the happier life they will have in the future. Is it true? Lulu and her sister Sophia may have a say.

Lulu and Sophia have a “tiger mother”. She pushed them a lot when they were young. For example, they couldn’t get grades lower than A’s. They had to practice the piano or violin for hours a day. There were no sleepovers or TV.

The tiger mother, Amy Chua, is a Chinese-American teacher at Yale Law School. Amy wrote a book named Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother and shared her strict parenting style in it.

Many people don’t like Amy’s style of parenting. They once worried that her daughters would not be happy. However, the two girls have grown up and they thank their mother. Sophia is hard-working, friendly and helpful. Not long ago, she shared some useful study advice online. Lulu is also a warm, smart and popular girl in her friends’ eyes. She said that the tiger parenting believes that a child can succeed, and it can push a child to study hard.

Still, not everyone agrees with the tiger mother’s parenting style. In fact, there isn’t a parenting style that fits everyone. What’s the best parenting style for you? Maybe you should work it out together with your parents.

Many birds can copy (模仿) the sounds of language. A type of African parrot is very good at doing this. This kind of parrot has grey feathers and people say they are clever.

Every December in London, the National Cage and Aviary Bird Show tries to find the best “talking” bird in the world. One bird named Prudle stood out (突出) among the “talking birds” by winning this prize every year from 1965 to 1977. In 1958, somebody took Prudle from his nest in Uganda, and then sold it to a woman named Iris Frost. She then took care of him at her home in Seaford, England. Before he died in 1994, aged 35, Prudle knew almost 800 words in English. Prudle was also the oldest bird in the world that lived in a cage.

Another parrot named Puck was tested in 1993. It turned out that Puck knew even more words than Prudle. Puck knew more than 1,700 English words. In the 2003 Guinness Book of World Records, Puck was listed as knowing more words than any other bird in the world.

  • 23、Last Tuesday, a Japanese company called Sky Drive showed its new flying car, the SD-03. The small car flew for four minutes, staying about 3 to 6 feet off the ground.

The SD-03 is powered by batteries (电池) and has 8 motors (发动机). Since flying cars don’t use runways, they need to be able to take off and land by going straight up or down. What made this test flight special was that a pilot was on board.

People hope flying cars will be useful for short trips like taxi rides in cities in the future. Flying cars could also help reach places that can’t be reached by road.

Of course, there are many challenges about flying cars in the way.

Safety is a big problem. What happens when a motor fails? If flying cars are crossing a city, an accident could hurt not just the people in the car, but people on the ground. That’s why the SD-03 has eight motors — as backups.

Some people believe flying cars will reduce traffic jams, saving lots of time. But new systems will be needed to help control traffic in the air, and this is very difficult for humans.

Finally, flying cars also use a lot of energy — less than helicopters, but more than cars, or even airplanes carrying many people.

【1】What is special about the test flight?

    A.It has 8 motors.

    B.It has a pilot inside.

    C.It is powered by batteries.

D.It can stay about 3 to 6 feet off the ground.

【2】How many challenges are mentioned about flying cars in the passage?

    A.Three.

    B.Four.

    C.Five.

    D.Six.

【3】What’s the Chinese meaning of the underlined word “backups”?

    A.储存

    B.价格

    C.备份

    D.利用

【4】Which of the following is NOT true about the SD-03?

A.It will reduce traffic jams in the future.

B.It takes off and lands by going straight up or down.

C.It can help reach places that can’t be reached by road.

D.It uses less energy than the airplanes carrying many people.

【5】We can read the passage from a magazine called ________.

    A.Great Inventions

    B.English Learning

    C.School Life
