二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Ever since Zion Williamson was 5 years old, he wanted to be a basketball star. But to get there, he needed a lot of encouragement and coaching along the way, and there was no one that better than his mother, Sharonda Sampson. She coached Zion in every youth basketball league he ever played. Sampson was a collegiate track star and later became a middle school health and physical education teacher.

He has got up at 5:30 a.m. to head to the outdoor court and play basketball since he was 9 years old. Zion's hard work began to pay off when he entered high school, where he became a YouTube hit for his high-flying dunks (灌篮)and powerful moves. But Sampson wanted her son to not only work hard at being great but study how the legends of the game went about their skills.

“When I started playing, my mom said there were three players she wanted me to watch — Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and Michael Jordan,” Williamson said. “Even though I wasn't alive when he (Jordan) was doing those things, it just attracted me. Everything he did was just incredible.”

The national spotlight shined on Zion during his one year of collegiate basketball at Duke University, where he was coached by five-time national champion Mike Krzyzewski. The most storied rivalry in the collegiate game is between Duke and North Carolina, where Jordan won a national championship back in the 1980s.

Shortly after his freshman season, Zion declared for the NBA Draft. Sampson was by her son's side when he was chosen by the Pelicans as the top player. “I wouldn't be here without my mom” said Zion with tears streaming down his face after his selection.

Zion was brilliant in the first 19 games of his regular-season NBA career, averaging over 23 points and six rebounds per game, before the coronavirus (冠状病毒)crisis forced the league to shut down. The 19-year-old Zion says he's been staying fit and will be ready to go when the league resumes.

【1】What do we know about Zion from the first two paragraphs?

A.He was trained mainly by his mother.

B.He dreamed of being a basketball star at 9.

C.He was famous for his mother at YouTube.

D.He coached his mother in basketball leagues.

【2】Why did Zion's mother ask him to watch three players?

A.She wanted to make Zion beat them one day.

B.She expected Zion to learn much from them.

C.She required Zion to join their basketball teams.

D.She wished Zion to like the same players as she.

【3】What did Zion mean by “I wouldn't be here without my mom”?

A.He would join the NBA with his mom

B.He would stand beside his mother firmly.

C.His success related to what his mom did.

D.He followed her wherever his mother went.

【4】What is the writer's purpose in writing the text?

A.To encourage people to learn from Zion.

B.To explain why Zion likes playing basketball.

C.To prove Zion has a gift for playing basketball.

D.To introduce an NBA basketball player.

  • 27、   The giraffe is the tallest animal on land. It is one of the best-known species in Africa, known for their very long necks, long legs and the brown and white patterns that cover their bodies.

Craig Hilton-taylor is head of the Red List program. He says there were between 152,000 and 163, 000 giraffes in 1985. But now, the number of them has fallen to about 98 , 000. “It is a huge tragedy and it's been sort of a silent disappearance that we just really haven't detected until now." Fifty years ago, groups of giraffes usually had 20 to 30 animals in them. Now, observers are only seeing six animals in a group. Until now the disappearance of the animals has not been observed closely. They live in such a wide area across Africa.

What is causing this decrease? Hilton-taylor says, “It is due to the effect of people, whether it's people causing loss of habitat for the species, hunting the species for food or harvesting for medicine or for wood. ”

He says pollution and the effects of climate change are just a few of the other problems affecting the species. Some people are moving into protected areas where giraffes and other animals live because of a lack of rain that affects food production. Sometimes the animals are killed for their meat. Also, civil wars in Africa make it more difficult to protect the animals.

Hilton-taylor says giraffes can be helped. “It's not too late, and we can turn things around. ” Some of the ideas that work include community involvement and tourism. Tourism, for example, provides jobs for local people. He also says there needs to be a giraffe action plan put in place to observe and survey the animals across the continent of Africa. Hilton-taylor adds that finding answers to the problems people face, like drought linked to climate change, food shortages and civil unrest, will provide answers for people to help giraffes.

1What does the underlined word “detected" mean in the second paragraph?

    A.changed B.noticed C.doubted D.confirmed

2Which is NOT a possible reason for the decrease of giraffes?

A.Civil wars in Africa. B.Loss of the habitats.

C.Climate change. D.Their wide living space.

3How can giraffes be helped according to Hilton-taylor?

A.By attracting more tourists to Africa. B.By stopping the global warming.

C.By learning more about the community. D.By moving local people away.

4Which might be the most suitable title for the passage?

A.Giraffes are changing Africa. B.Silent disappearance of giraffes.

C.Tourism and nature protection. D.Wildlife can be saved in future.

  • 28、   For the first time, a causal link has been established between climate(气候) change and the timing of a natural event-the appearance of the common brown butterfly.

Although there have been strong connections between global warming and changes in the timing of events such as animal migration and flowering, it has been hard to show a cause-and-effect link. This is what Michael Kearney and Natalie Briscoe of the University of Melbourne, Australia, have now done.

The researchers compared temperature changes in Melbourne-where the butterfly is common-with recorded observations of the first brown butterfly to be seen in the spring since the 1940s.With each of the past ten years, the butterflies appeared 1.6 days earlier and Melbourne heated by 0.14℃. Overall, the butterfly now appears on average 10.4 days before it did in the 1940s.

The pair are confident in the relationship for two reasons. First, they placed eggs of the butterfly, in special boxes where temperature could be controlled and found that each larval stage had a different response to warmer-than-normal conditions. The egg, which is laid in late summer, and the first larval stage do well at high temperatures, says Kearney. The second to the fifth stages occur in winter and can't survive high temperatures. The knock- on effect is that the larval pupates earlier and the butterfly appears sooner. Second, they made a mathematical model combining these physiological effects of temperature on development with climate data. The model precisely matched the observed changes in butterfly emergence date.

The researchers used several climate models to find out what is likely to have caused the rise in Melbourne's temperature, and ruled out the possibility that natural weather events could account for the warming.

1What is the relationship between the rise in temperature and the butterfly appearance?

A.They are linked in a difficult way.

    B.They are related in a cause-and-effect way.

C.They have a direct relationship with each other.

D.They have no connection with each other.

2Why were the researchers confident about their finding?

A.They had used the most advanced equipment in the world.

B.Their finding got support from the textbooks.

C.The results of their study is based on expert judgement.

D.Their experiment proved their previous guessing.

3What does the underlined part "The knock-on effect" in paragraph 4 mean?

A.The effect caused by the thing that happened before.

B.The effect of things that happened at the same time.

C.The effect of one thing causing the other long after.

D.The effect of one thing causing the other quickly.

4What can be inferred from the text?

A.The exact reason for Melbourne's temperature rise is very clear.

B.Climate models cannot exactly show climate change in history.

C.The timing of the butterfly appearance will be earlier with increased warming.

D.The rise in temperature decides the possibility of natural weather events.

  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

“Life of Pi” is narrated by an older Pi and takes place in the present as he tells his life story to a writer. Pi begins with how he got his name and how his family owned a zoo, but eventually leads into his family needing to leave India for financial 1. The heart of the story lies in Pi as a young man and the time he spent out at sea on a lifeboat with a tiger named Richard Parker, but getting to that point is quite an ordeal(苦难考验). Pi loses everything and everyone close to him in the blink of an eye and he doesn’t 2 on making what feels like an unbreakable bond with a Bengal tiger.

The 3 film offers a rather marvelous message about religion as Pi discusses the experimentation with several different religions as a young boy. Even though it seems kind of silly that a boy has 4 so many religions at one point in his life, it portrays a/an 5 message in a light that doesn’t seem too preachy(说教的). But the religious aspect is really only a backdrop for being on your own 6 to finding who you really are. Feeling so alone for so long and having Pi talk about not being alone and not getting to say goodbye to those he cared about most is one of those things that just hits you really hard.

While witnessing Pi attempt to tame Richard Parker is really 7, there are so many unbelievable sights to witness in “Life of Pi”. There’s the whale, the jellyfish, the flying fish, that 8 storm, and that seaweed island with all of the meerkats (a kind of monkey). “Life of Pi” never really lets up on being 9 breathtaking and amazing from beginning to end.

“Life of Pi” is pleasantly satisfying. With a heartfelt message, beautiful visuals, and stunning camera work. “Life of Pi” is truly a sight to behold and illustrates how 10 3D can be to a film that isn’t just a summer hit or blockbuster.
