二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Tina Brigham, a 50-year-old store owner from a suburb of Washington, DC, wrestled with the puzzles while waiting for customers. “If it’s a 30-minute puzzle, I try to figure it out in 12,” she said. After several years, she found she could easily put together employee work schedules in her head. A lot of stores use an electronic scheduling tool, but I have all the data in my mind,” she said. “I think my brain seems sharper and more focused because of the game.”

The games do seem to work. In one 2020 study, Gary Small, chair of psychiatry at Hackensack University Medical Center, found that 1,091 women and men who frequently played cards, bingo, or did crossword puzzles had sharper thinking and memory skills — equivalent to an IQ up to 5.6 points higher — than those who rarely did. The study doesn’t prove that the puzzles directly led to the higher IQs, but it does show that even people who increased their game-playing in their 70s seemed to get brain benefits within a few years.

Exactly how games sharpen memory and cognitive function is still something of a mystery. But advances in neuroimaging (神经影像学) allow researchers to study how the brain reacts to all sorts of outside stimulation. Small later included 60 women and men completing Latin squares. As the puzzles grew more difficult with fewer clues, players slowed down and made more mistakes. That’s when he discovered something surprising: More regions of the brain got involved, especially in the prefrontal cortex (前额叶皮质区),an area involved with problem-solving, judgment, and memory.

Small suggests that if you find yourself debating whether to spend the next 20 minutes taking a walk or playing a brain game, you should choose the walk. Physical activity can help deliver oxygen and fuel to your brain cells. “If you do one thing to help your brain, I’d say it’s exercise.” he says. “Getting good sleep and keep a balanced diet are also important. Brain games work best as part of a whole package of brain-healthy strategies. And remember: A little fun never hurts.

A.Puzzles directly leads to higher IQs.

D.Physical activities play an equally important role ais brain games.

【3】Why does the author mention good sleep and a healthy diet in the last paragraph?

A.To advocate good sleep and a balanced diet.

B.To advise what we should do to keep healthy.

  • 22、When it comes to Albert Einstein (1879-1955), it's easy to imagine an old, crazy-haired genius. But before he ever came up with the theory of relativity, Einstein was a 23-year-old patent clerk, working for the minimum wage. Young Einstein decided to earn some extra cash tutoring physics. He put up an ad, and Maurice Solovine, a student of philosophy, responded. The two did not do much traditional studying, but instead chatted about philosophy. Conrad Habicht, a mathematician and a friend of Einstein, joined their debates. They jokingly called themselves the Olympia Academy.

We’ve gathered together some books the members of the Olympia Academy read and discussed. Maybe the literature that inspired Einstein can inspire you to be clever, too.

A Treatise of Human Nature by David Hume

David Hume, a 18th-century Scottish philosopher, was always suspicious. He believed “everything we know is really just a matter of probability”. He argued “reason doesn’t motivate people’’, which led to all sorts of questions, such as “So what’s motivating you to write this?”

“The chief benefit, which results from philosophy, arises in an indirect manner, and more from its secret insensible influence, than from its immediate application,” Hume wrote.

Analysis of Sensations by Ernst Mach

An Austrian philosopher Ernst Mach wrote about how mysterious senses are. In an attempt to figure out how humans experience balance, Mach cleverly built a turning chairs , which used shades of gray bands to show that the colors people saw were deeply affected by the colors around them.

Science and Hypothesis by Henri Poincare

Henri Poincare, a 19th-century French philosopher, was also a theoretical physicist, an engineer and a mathematician. At college, he was fantastic at math. He created his special theory and wrote Science and Hypothesis. Some of his thoughts actually sowed the seeds for Einstein’s theory of relativity, such as the idea that time is relative.

【1】What did the members of the Olympia Academy have in common?

    A.They lived on high wages.

B.They tended to laugh at each other.

    C.They loved reading and studying.

    D.They were 18th-century mathematicians.

【2】Which of the following does David Hume agree with?

    A.Reason motivates people.

    B.Every human sense is mysterious.

C.People should see everything with doubt.

D.The chief benefit of philosophy arises directly.

【3】Who probably inspired Einstein’s theory of relativity?

    A.Conrad Habicht.

    B.David Hume.

    C.Ernst Mach.

    D.Henri Poincare.

  • 23、The UK government has a plan to reduce waste that shifts the responsibility for disposal(处置)from the state to the companies that make it.

The legislation requires waste producers to pay into the system themselves or through their suppliers that is what the government termed, a “polluter pays” principal. Businesses will have to change their waste processing before the tax comes into play. This is similar to the anti-waste legislation passed in France in February 2020 that prohibits the destruction(销毁)of unsold clothing, cosmetics, hygiene products and electrical products. Companies will have to reuse,or recycle the items.

Dealing with waste is a global problem and we must deal with the over 2 billion metric tons of solid waste generated every year. The World Bank estimates that overall waste will increase to 3.4 billion tons if nothing is done to change the situation.

The demand for legislation like the tough attitude the UK is taking has been increasing according to Positive News. And it is not just environmental groups calling for the changes. This is a consumer driven movement and people are willing to pay more for sustainable brands. Josh Bowden,co-founder of Noissue told Positive News.

What is absolutely certain is that local governments will save a lot of money as the responsibility shifts to the polluters. That could be better invested in things like social care or parks or libraries.” Other countries have made great progress in reducing waste. Sweden's recycling program is so efficient that the country is running out of trash. The recycling rate is almost 99 percent and they are rapidly approaching zero waste. Today, large companies are greening their brands and moving to sustainable packaging including Colgate,Waitrose,Nestle, and Unilever which now has recyclable black packaging. The government of the UK hopes that other companies will follow their example. A partnership between government legislation and private companies will go a long way to reducing the tons of waste going into our environment every year. Laws like the ones in the UK and France can be implemented around the world.

【1】Who will pay for the costs dealing with UK's waste in the future?

    A.The UK government.

    B.The companies.

    C.The World Bank

    D.The customers.

【2】How should French shops deal with unsold goods?

    A.By destroying them.

    B.By throwing them away.

C.By donating them to poor people.

    D.By reusing them.

【3】What does The World Bank think of world waste disposal problem?

    A.Serious.

    B.Optimistic.

    C.Uncontrolled.

    D.Hopeful.

【4】What can we infer for the last paragraph?

A.Local governments will spend more money controlling pollution.

B.Almost all companies are willing to reduce the waste

C.Sweden has done a good job in dealing with waste.

D.Laws controlling waste in the UK and France is complete.
