二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、When most of us look at our hands, we might notice that we need to clean, or stop biting our fingernails, and that’s about it. But if you ask a doctor, he can see a whole lot more. Everything from poor diet and stress to serious kidney (肾) problems can be revealed by a glance at your fingernails.

There are about 30 different nail signs that can be associated with medical issues, though may indicate more than one problem, according to Dr.Amy Derick, a clinical instructor of dermatology at Northwestern University.

Here are five of the things a doctor can tell about your health based on your fingernails.

    1. People who aren’t eating well and lack vitamin or dietary may have thinner than normal nails, which are more likely to break.

2.Horizontal (水平的) lines are associated with serious physical stress. They frequently occur in people who have gone through chemotherapy(化疗).They can also occur after some illnesses, injuries, or with severe malnourishment(营养不良).Interestingly, there may be an altitude connection too. They’ve also been found in people who dove 1,000 feet and others who participated in an Everest exploration.

    3. Vertical (垂直的)lines, however, are generally not such a big deal. Some people are more genetically prone to them than others, but they’re commonly associated with aging.

    4. When people lack iron, their nails can turn spoon-like. Instead of curving down and covering the finger normally, they ’ll start to rise up on the sides and front, like the part of a spoon that holds liquid.

    5. Kidney and liver problems can create “half-and-half nails”, where one part of the nail is white and the other part dark or pink, according to Derick.

Doctors note that because disease diagnosis is complex and some symptoms can be associated with different diseases, you should always see a medical professional if you are concerned about something you notice.

【1】 What is the main idea of the passage?

    A. Doctors can tell us something about our health by looking at our nails.

    B. We should see a doctor if we find nails in bad condition.

    C. A famous doctor in the USA conducted an interesting research.

    D. If we don’t want to get ill, we need to clean and stop biting our fingernails.

【2】 If we don’t eat well or regularly, our fingernails may ________.

    A. become harder than normal nails.

    B. become thinner than normal nails.

    C. become “half-and-half” nails.

    D. have horizontal and vertical lines.

【3】Who will have horizontal lines on the nails ?

    A. A cancer patient who has received normal treatment.

    B. Hungry African children suffering from severe malnourishment.

    C. An explorer who had reached Zhangjiajie in Hunan Province.

    D. A patient with serious illness, like kidney and liver problems.

【4】 Which of the following best describes the nails that show people lack iron?

    A. The nails are thinner and more likely to break.

    B. The nails will curve down and cover the fingers.

    C. The nails will start to rise up on the sides and front.

    D. The nails will change their colours on the surface.

  • 22、The Arctic,Atlantic, Indian and Pacific are the four oceans we learned about in the geography class. But now we have a new one. On World Oceans Day, which was on June 8, 2021, the US National Geographic Society announced it would recognize the Southern Ocean in Antarctica, bringing the global total to five.

Unlike the Arctic,Atlantic ,Indian and Pacific Oceans, which are defined by the continents that bound them, the Southern Ocean is instead characterized by the currents circling Antarctica. According to National Geographic, the Southern Ocean includes most of the waters surrounding Antarctica out to 60 degrees south latitude.

“Surrounded by the swift currents, it is the only ocean to touch three other oceans and to completely embrace a continent rather than being embraced by them," Sylvia Earle, US marine biologist and oceanographer (海洋学家),told The Daily Mail.

“Anyone who has been there will struggle to explain what's so amazing about it, but they'll all agree that the glaciers are bluer, the air colder, the mountains more spectacular (壮观的) and the landscapes more appealing than anywhere else they can go," Seth Sykora-Bodie, a marine scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told National Geographic.

Due to the ecologically unique environment of the Southern Ocean, it's home to thousands of rare species. The ocean also has wider ecological effects. National Geographic hopes their revised maps will bring public awareness to the region, thereby encouraging the Southern Ocean conservation.

“We think it's really important from an educational standpoint, as well as from a map-labeling standpoint, to bring attention to the Southern Ocean as a fifth ocean." Alex Tait,National Geographic Society geographer, told The Post. “ So when students learn about it, they learn it's an interconnected ocean, and there are these regions called oceans that are really important."

【1】How is the Southern Ocean defined?

    A.By the location and latitude.

B.By the size and depth of water.

C.By the continents that divide it.

D.By the currents around the pole.

【2】What can we learn about the Southern Ocean from Seth Sykora-Bodie?

A.The scenery is more attractive than other parts of the world.

B.There's a special ocean in the icy waters around Antarctica.

C.It is an ocean to connect three oceans and one continent.

D.It is unlike any other oceans with many unique species.

【3】Why did National Geographic revise the map?

A.To promote the sales of maps.

    B.To arouse the public's curiosity.

    C.To protect the Southern Ocean.

    D.To update people's geographic knowledge.

【4】What is the best title for this passage?

    A.Antarctica Is Full of Attraction

B.The US Announced a New Ocean

C.Ocean Conservation Is On the Road

D.The Public Are Crazy about a New Ocean

  • 23、In no particular order, here are some songs on the Music app of my phone:

On a Sunday Afternoon by Lighter Shade of Brown—A student of mine introduced this rap song lo me all the way back in the early 1990s, when 1 was teaching Spanish at a local university. The story in the song takes place not too far from where I live in Los Angeles. It’s a good “driving” song, nothing complicated or “deep”.

Say Something by A Great Big World—A more recent song about a couple losing contact with each other. The piano part is very little playing but beautiful.

American Pie by Don McLean—Another song from my youth in the 80s, very popular with almost every American of my generation. It retells some of the key events of the middle 20th century, a song of happy memories of the past and wanting to return to those better times.

The Weight by The Band—Another old song, originally made public in 1968, but one I didn’t hear until I was in high school more than 10 years later. I don’t understand the words to the song completely, but the feeling of the song is very comforting to me.

Under the Bridge by Red Hot Chili Peppers—This Los Angeles group wrote a song that 1 used to listen to when I first moved to LA more than 25 years ago. I didn’t know anyone here when I first arrived. When I got bored, I used to drive up and down the major streets that cross the city from east to west, listening to this song about the “city of angel” being as “lonely as I am. (Don t worry! I have plenty of friends now.)

【1】What does the underlined word “deep” probably mean?

    A.with skill

    B.with comfort

    C.with a normal meaning

    D.with a significant meaning

【2】When did the author probably hear the Weight by The Band?

    A.In 1968.

    B.In 1970.

    C.in the 1980s.

    D.in the 1990s.

【3】When the author first moved to LA, the first song he heard was            .

    A.Say Something

    B.American Pie

    C.The Weight

    D.Under the Bridge

  • 24、There are various aspects that go into making a successful school, and success can be measured in various ways. Often, the teachers are praised for a school’s success and blamed for its failure. Yet, in order for a school to be effective, it must be a place where teaching and learning can easily take place, and that requires the hard work of more than just educators. Students must take learning into their own hands and feel as if what they are doing is as important as it actually is. This can only be done with the cooperation of every adult that is involved in the students’ life. Some of these individuals often go unnoticed, yet the role they play in the students’ lives is immeasurable.

In the school, administrative assistants greet students at the start of the day and answer a large quantity of questions. When an assistant remembers a student’s name or even something special about that student, it communicates to him that he is cared for. The assistant can also give that extra encouragement for a student to make better choices, especially when they are visiting the principal’s office.

Meanwhile, though cafeteria workers have a short space of time to interact with students, they can make a big difference as well. Beyond meeting nutritional needs, cafeteria workers may also on occasion meet the emotional needs of the students they serve. Students benefit from positive interaction with adults, and cafeteria workers may give that extra bit of encouragement that a child needs.

Custodians (管理员) are usually underappreciated for what they offer to schools. They have to be knowledgeable about everything from cleaning to fixing the most intricate (复杂的) tools. They get to school early in the morning before teachers arrive and lock up late at night after the last student has left from the after-school event. They also make sure teachers are equipped with the necessary items and prepare the rooms so that they are ready for learning. A great custodian also gives that kind word or extra smile to that student who needs it most.

1The purpose of the passage is to _______.

    A. emphasize the role teachers play in a school

    B. highlight the contributions of other staff at school besides teachers.

    C. tell us who make the greatest contributions to a school

    D. explain what contributes to the success of a student

2If an assistant remembers a student’s name, the student will feel that _________.

    A. he is paid particular attention to   B. he is special

    C. he has done something wrong   D. he has made progress in study

3Which of the following is TRUE about cafeteria workers?

    A. It’s enough for them to cook for the students.

    B. It’s hard for them to interact with the students.

    C. They have the most interaction with students at school.

    D. They can also meet the emotional needs of the students.

4How does the author feel about the staff mentioned in the text?

    A. Disappointed.   B. Dissatisfied.   C. Appreciative.   D. Doubtful.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Steve, a twelve-year-old boy with alcoholic parents, was about to be lost forever, by the U. S. education system. Remarkably, he could read. Yet, in spite of his reading skills, Steve was failing.   He had been failing since first grade, as he was passed on from grade to grade. Steve was a big boy, looking more like a teenager than a twelve-year-old. Yet, Steve went unnoticed until Miss White.

Miss White was a smiling, young, beautiful redhead, and Steve loved her!For the first time in his young life, he couldn’t take his eyes off his teacher; yet, still he failed. He never did his homework,   and he was always in trouble with Miss White. His heart would break under her sharp words, and when he was punished for failing to turn in his homework, he felt just miserable! Still, he did not study.

In the middle of the first semester of school, the entire seventh grade was tested for basic skills. Steve hurried through his tests, and continued to dream of other things, as the day went

on.   His heart was not in school, but in the woods, where he often escaped alone, trying to shutout the sights, sounds and smells of his alcoholic home. No one checked on him to see if he was safe. No one knew he was gone, because no one was sober (清醒的) enough to care. Oddly, Steve never missed a day of school.

One day, Miss White’s impatient voice broke into his daydreams.

“Steve!” Startled, he turned to look at her.

“Pay attention!” she began to go over the test results for the seventh grade.

“You all did pretty well,” she told the class, ”except for one boy, and it breaks my heart to tell you this, but. . “She hesitated, pinning Steve to his seat with a sharp stare, her eyes searching his face.

“The smartest boy in the seventh grade is failing my class!”

She just stared at Steve, as the class spun around for a good look. Steve dropped his eyes and carefully examined his fingertips.

After that, Steve still wouldn’t do his homework. Even as the punishments became more severe, he remained stubborn.

“Just try it! ONE WEEK!” He was unmoved.

“You are smart enough! You’ll see a change!” Nothing fazed him.

Give yourself a chance! Don’t give up on your life!” Nothing.

“Steve! Please! I care about you!”

Wow! Suddenly, Steve got it! Someone cared about him? Someone, totally unattainable and perfect, CARED ABOUT HIM?!
