  • 24、There were two men who lived next to each other. One of them was a retired teacher and the other was an insurance agent(保险代理人). Both of them had planted many different plants in their gardens. The retired teacher seldom watered his plants and didn't pay a lot of attention to them. But his neighbor was very careful with his plants and watered them often.

The retired teacher's plants were small, but still looked okay, while the insurance agent's plants were much bigger and greener. One night, there was heavy rain and wind because of a minor(较小的) storm. The next morning, both of the neighbors came out to check on their gardens. The insurance agent saw that his plants had been ripped from the ground and were totally destroyed. But the retired teacher's plants were not damaged at all but stood firm.

The insurance agent was surprised. He went to consult(咨询) the retired teacher. “We both grew the same plants and I cared for my plants better than you did. How could your plants still be okay?”

The retired teacher smiled and said, “Because you gave your plants too much attention. You made it too easy for them to grow. I gave my plants just a little bit of water, so their roots had to grow deeper to absorb(吸收) more water. That is why my plants didn't die.”

  • 25、   Mukbang, a South Korean word, means “eating broadcast(吃播)”. It is an online broadcast in which a host eats tons of food while talking with the people watching him or her. It began in South Korea in around 2010 and has spread all over the world.

Why did mukbang first appear in South Korea? Jeff Yang, an Asian-American cultural critic(评论家), thinks that it’s down to “the loneliness of unmarried or uncoupled South Koreans”. He believes that eating on your own can be hard in a country like South Korea, where social eating is such a long tradition. However, eating alone is becoming increasingly common. It seems that mukbang gives people the feeling that they are part of something larger.

Alice Stride, a spokeswoman for the Campaign to End Loneliness, says, “It might bring someone great comfort to watch mukbang.” She adds that she would be worried if younger people were watching people eat instead of eating with friends or family, but for older people it could be a comfort. “If you can’t get out, if you’re ill for example, then perhaps that will bring you a great sense of comfort. On the whole, though, we would advocate face-to-face communication. It’s something that won’t change.”

“I would always encourage people to do whatever makes them feel better as long as it is a healthy habit,” says Ben Edwards, a relationship expert. “I doubt if mukbang is a healthy way to have a meal. But I think if people feel like watching other people eat, and it gives them some sort of satisfaction, I see no harm.”

1What questions are answered in Paragraph 1?

    How old is mukbang?

    What does mukbang mean?

    Where did mukbang begin?

    How did mukbang get popular?

    A. ①②③ B. ①③④ C. ①②④ D. ②③④

2According to Jeff Yang, it is difficult for South Koreans to eat alone because they_____________.

    A. have the culture of eating together B. are supporters of ending loneliness

    C. like joining a larger group D. usually have a big family

3Which of the following is probably Alice Stride’s opinion?

    A. Mukbang helps lots of people feel less lonely.

    B. Older people are more interested in mukbang.

    C. Younger people should offer more comfort to older people.

    D. Younger people should eat with their friends and family a lot.

4What does the underlined word “advocate” in Paragraph 3 probably mean in Chinese?

    A. 观察 B. 提倡 C. 建立 D. 评估

5What does Ben Edwards think of mukbang?

    A. It is difficult to do. B. It is healthy for the host.

    C. It is an acceptable thing. D. It is a popular way of eating.

After having two more glasses of cordial(甜果汁饮料), Diana turned pale suddenly.

“I’m sick,” she said, “I must go home.” And she left Green Gables and ran all the way home.

On Monday, Anne went to see if Diana was better. She soon ran back home with tears rolling down cheeks.

“What has happened, Anne?” asked Marilla.

“Mrs. Barry says that I sent Diana home drunk on Saturday. She says she’s never going to let Diana play with me again!”

Marilla went to the cupboard and then came back to the kitchen with a bottle of wine, trying not to smile.

“Anne, you gave Diana wine instead of raspberry cordial. Didn’t you know the difference?”

“I never tasted it,” said Anne. “But Mrs. Barry will never believe me. And now I’ll never be able to play with Diana again!”

The following Monday, Anne surprised Marilla by coming down from her room with her books.

“I’m going back to school,” she said. “That is all there is left in life for me, now that my friend is gone.”

Marilla tried not to show how happy she was to hear this. “You’d better work hard,” she said.

One evening Anne did work hard, and soon she was top of the class with Gilbert Blythe, whom she still found very annoying.

Anne was at home doing her homework. Matthew was home, but Marilla had gone to town with the Barrys and Mrs. Lynde. Suddenly, Anne looked up and saw Diana standing at the door. She looked very worried.

“What is the matter, Diana?” cried Anne.

“Oh, Anne, do come quick,” said Diana nervously. “Minnie May is very sick. Father and Mother are away in town and there’s nobody to go for the doctor.”

Matthew quietly got his cap and coat and went for the doctor.

  • 27、How to protect children Web fans from unsuitable materials on-line while encouraging them to use the Internet has long been discussed in the U.S.

For some parents, the Internet can seem like a jungle, filled with danger for their children. But jungles contain(包含) wonders as well as danger and with good guides, some education, and a few precautions(预防措施), the wilds of the Internet can be safely navigated(领航). “Kids have to be on-line. If we tell our kids they can’t have chance to the Internet, we’re cutting them off from their future.” said an expert.

Most kids have started to use search engines. Many of them are great for finding plenty of interesting Internet sites, and they can also find places where you might not want your kids to go. There are some search engines designed just for kids. A certain software contains only sites that have been chosen as safe. The most popular way to limit chance would be to use a “content screener(过滤器)”, but this can’t be wholly depended on, and the best thing parents can do is to talk to their kids and let them know what is OK or not OK to see or do on the Internet. Another way is that mum or dad is nearby when the child is surfing the Internet.

    Four other tips:

●Don’t put the PC in a child’s room but keep it in an area where mum or dad can keep an eye on things. That also makes the Internet more of a family activity.

●Ask your child what he or she has been doing and about any friends they make on-line.

●Tell your child not to give on-line strangers personal information, especially like address and phone number.

●And tell your children never to talk to anyone they meet on-line over the phone, send them anything, accept anything from them or agree to meet with them unless you go along.

1The passage is mainly about the subject of___________.

    A. being against children’s on-line   B. Internet in America

    C. enjoying Internet   D. American children going on-line

2The underlined word “jungle” properly means__________ in Chinese.

    A. 泥潭   B. 旋涡   C. 丛林   D. 飓风

3The best way to protect children from improper materials is_________.

    A. to buy some search engines for the children

    B. to be nearby when they are surfing the Internet

    C. to educate the children and encourage them to tell right from wrong

    D. to fix a content screener on the computer

4Which of the following is right according to the passage?

    A. Surfing the Internet is the best method of educating children.

    B. Children’s not having chance to the Internet may have an influence on their future.

    C. Content screeners can be wholly depended on to make children surf online safely.

    D. All searching engines can help children to choose materials fit for them.

5According to the passage, we can infer that________.

    A. Internet contains some harmful sites   B. a child who is on-line is in danger

    C. Internet is a jungle full of danger   D. children can tell anyone online their addresses
