25、I've loved my mother's desk since I was just tall enough to sit above the top of is mother sat writing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I thought that the act of writing must be a most wonderful thing in the world.
Years later, during her final illness, mother kept different things for my sister and brother."But the desk," she said again "is for Elizabeth."
I never saw her angry, never saw her cry. I knew she loved me; she showed it action. But as a young girl. I wanted to have heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter.
They never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was "too emotional (易动感的)". But she lived "on the surface ".
As years passed and I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive me. My hope turned to disappointment, then little interest and, finally peace ,it seemed that nothing happened. I couldn't be sure that the letter had even got to mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not.
But the present of her desk told me, as she'd never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded and refolded many times. It was my letter.
"In any way you choose, mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words."

26、What keeps us healthy and happy as we go through life? What if we could study people from the time when they were teenagers all the way to their old age to find the answer?
The Harvard Study of Adult Development may be the longest study of adult life that has ever been done. Since 1938, we have tracked the lives of 724 men, year after year, asking about their work, home lives, health, and other aspects (方面). With good luck and the hard work of several generations of researchers, this study has survived. About 60 of the original 724 men are still alive, still taking part in the study.
The clearest message that we get from this study is: Good relationships keep us happier and healthier. Over these years, our study has shown that the people who fared best were the people who leaned into relationships, with family, with friends, and with the community.
We’ve learned three big lessons about relationships. First, social connections are really good for us, and loneliness kills. It turns out that people who are more socially connected to others are happier, physically healthier, and live longer than people who are less well connected. Second, the quality of your close relationships matters. Living in the midst of conflict is really bad for our health. Third, good relationships don’t just protect our bodies, but also our brains.
The answer is clear: The good life is built with good relationships. But it’s not easy to have good relationships. Relationships are messy, complicated (复杂的) and hard work. Building good relationships is also a lifelong task. It never ends.
【1】What can we learn about the study?
A.It is about adult development.
B.Most of the 724 men were born in the 1930s.
C.It was once stopped because of lack of researchers.
D.About 60 researchers have taken part in it.
【2】 ________ keep us happier and healthier.
A.Family relationships
B.Close relationships
C.Bad relationships
D.Good relationships
【3】How many big lessons have they learned about relationships?
A.Four.
B.Three.
C.Five.
D.One.
【4】What does the author suggest to us?
A.Staying away from messy relationships.
B.Building up good relationships with others.
C.Working hard to solve health problems.
D.Trying to live a long and happy life.

In the US, getting your driver’s license at the age of 16 is seen as a major coming-of-age (成人) ritual (仪式). You may have seen kids c【2】 their first car in movies and TV shows. It is the first true t【3】 of independence for most teenagers. But not every teenager gets a car right away. U【4】, their parents will buy a second-hand car for them as their first car.
