  • 26、What keeps us healthy and happy as we go through life? What if we could study people from the time when they were teenagers all the way to their old age to find the answer?

The Harvard Study of Adult Development may be the longest study of adult life that has ever been done. Since 1938, we have tracked the lives of 724 men, year after year, asking about their work, home lives, health, and other aspects (方面). With good luck and the hard work of several generations of researchers, this study has survived. About 60 of the original 724 men are still alive, still taking part in the study.

The clearest message that we get from this study is: Good relationships keep us happier and healthier. Over these years, our study has shown that the people who fared best were the people who leaned into relationships, with family, with friends, and with the community.

We’ve learned three big lessons about relationships. First, social connections are really good for us, and loneliness kills. It turns out that people who are more socially connected to others are happier, physically healthier, and live longer than people who are less well connected. Second, the quality of your close relationships matters. Living in the midst of conflict is really bad for our health. Third, good relationships don’t just protect our bodies, but also our brains.

The answer is clear: The good life is built with good relationships. But it’s not easy to have good relationships. Relationships are messy, complicated (复杂的) and hard work. Building good relationships is also a lifelong task. It never ends.

【1】What can we learn about the study?

    A.It is about adult development.

B.Most of the 724 men were born in the 1930s.

C.It was once stopped because of lack of researchers.

D.About 60 researchers have taken part in it.

【2】 ________ keep us happier and healthier.

    A.Family relationships

    B.Close relationships

    C.Bad relationships

    D.Good relationships

【3】How many big lessons have they learned about relationships?

    A.Four.

    B.Three.

    C.Five.

    D.One.

【4】What does the author suggest to us?

    A.Staying away from messy relationships.

B.Building up good relationships with others.

C.Working hard to solve health problems.

D.Trying to live a long and happy life.

  • 28、   As you grow older, there will be certain events that will mark your growth. Graduating from high school and getting your first job are just a few of these. What are some other ways in which we mark our j1  towards adulthood?

In the US, getting your driver’s license at the age of 16 is seen as a major coming-of-age (成人) ritual (仪式). You may have seen kids c2 their first car in movies and TV shows. It is the first true t3  of independence for most teenagers. But not every teenager gets a car right away. U4,  their parents will buy a second-hand car for them as their first car.

Another big coming-of-age event is the prom (毕业舞会). H5 at the end of the year, the prom is a graduation celebration for senior high school students. Teenagers wear fancy clothing, ask each other to dance and vote (投票) for a prom "king" and “queen". For many teenagers, prom is the biggest social event of the year. It's a time for them to dress and a6 like an adult.

And there's still more. At the age of 18, we can vote in the US and at 21, we can drink alcohol ( ).

This is also the time when most children m7 out of their parents' home for college or work. It is around this age that society starts to c8 us to be adults. But what does it really mean to be an adult?

Psychologist Jeffrey Arnett surveyed young adults and found three c9 adulthood goals: taking r10 for yourself, making independent decisions, and being financially (经济上) independent.

I agree with Arnett. Being an adult has more to do with one's maturity (成熟) If you want to drive, vote, drink, leave home or even start a romantic relationship, you have to make sure that you're ready to be responsible.
