  • 24、   The Life of Jane Goodall

On the morning of July 14, 1960, Jane Goodall arrived at Lake Tanganyika in the Gombe National Park. Then around 5 p. m, Jane went into the forest to find her first chimpanzee.

As a young woman, Jane Goodall was following her childhood dream of studying chimpanzees in Africa. After many months of difficult work she made three important discoveries: chimpanzees ate meat, they used tools to get food, and they also made tools.

Every evening, Jane wrote her findings in her journal. She began to publish articles in magazines. After a while, Jane was accepted by a university. Her work was also making her famous. There was a documentary (纪录片)film,Miss Goodall and the Wild Chimpanzees (1963), and then My Friends the Wild Chimpanzees (1969), the first of many books. During the 1970s, Gombe became a dangerous place to work. It is on the border of four different countries and there was fighting among them. Many foreigners left, but Jane stayed to continue her workand noted that chimpanzees could also be violent.

A different problem developed in Gombe in the 1980s. The forests were getting smaller and there was no enough space for chimpanzees because of the increasing human population. As a result, there were only about a hundred chimpanzees living in Gombe by t the end of the1980s. Jane realized something had to be done, so she made a plan with the local community to grow more trees.

At the beginning of the 1990s, Jane left Gombe. She set up sanctuaries (庇护所)for chimpanzees which had been caught because of the trade in chimpanzee meat. She also started giving speeches. She has very little spare time but still spends part of every year in the forest in Gombe, watching her chimpanzees.

    1What was Jane's childhood dream?

    A.To explore forests in Africa.

    B.To make a documentary film.

    C.To write books about animals.

    D.To study chimpanzees in Africa.

2What did Jane do in the 1970s?

A.She continued to work in Gombe.

B.She went to study in a university.

    C.She found her first chimpanzee.

    D.She published her first book.

3What plan did Jane make to help chimpanzees in1980s?

A.To grow more trees B.To do more studies

C.To stop the fighting. D.To set up sanctuaries

  • 26、   People in Western countries are eating less meat these days, whether for their health or because they want to protect animals. But now they have another reason.

Eating less meat can help to prevent climate change, according to a recent study published in Nature.

Raising livestock (家畜) is bad for the environment. When animals like cows digest (消化) food, their stomachs make greenhouse gases, which are a major cause of global warming. Seventeen percent of greenhouse gas emissions (排放) come from livestock farming, The New York Times reported.

In addition, to raise these livestock, people have to cut down forests and turn them into farms. Forests play a key role in fighting global warming because they absorb greenhouse gases.

Eating less meat according to certain guidelines could cut global food-related emissions by nearly a third by 2050, the study found. Keeping a vegetarian diet in the long term could bring down emissions by 63 percent.

But eating less meat won’t be easy. According to the study, people in Western countries will need to eat 90 percent less meat than they do now in order to have an impact (影响) on our climate. Scientists are now trying to find new foods to replace meat.

Some say that insects could help. A 2013 UN report said that eating insects is healthier and better for the environment. They produce 75 percent less greenhouse gases than livestock.

Some experts are creating lab-grown meat. They make meat in a lab using livestock cells (细胞). In March, US company JUST said people in the US might be able to buy its lab-grown meat by the end of this year

1How much less meat should people eat to influence the climate?

    A.63 percent. B.70 percent. C.75 percent. D.90 percent.

2Eating less meat can help protect the environment because _____.

A.there will be more animal-related waste

B.less livestock means less greenhouse gas emissions

C.animals are an important part of the environment

D.people will plant more trees around their houses

3According to the story, eating less meat can help us _____.

    a. stay healthy b. reduce waste c. protect animals d. slow down climate change

    A.a;b;c B.b;c;d C.a;b;d D.a;c;d

4What is the main idea of the story?

A.Why Westerners eat less meat these days.

B.What people will eat in the future.

C.How eating less meat influences the environment.

D.What the major cause of global warming is.

  • 27、Have you ever heard of e-waste (electric waste), which can be produced every day? How do you deal with your computers, MP4 players and mobile phones when they’re broken or you want a new one?

Most people just throw them away. With the development of electric industry, e-waste pollution has become a serious problem. According to the United Nations, in 2014, people around the world produced 41.8 million tons of e-waste and only recycled 6.5 million tons. The US was the biggest waster, producing 7.1 million tons. China came second, with 6 million tons.

It’s important to pay attention to e-waste. It can either be valuable or harmful, depending on how we deal with it. E-waste is a valuable urban mine(城市矿藏). The value of the metals, like gold and silver in the waste around the world, is amazing. And the metals can be reused. But if people throw them away, the harmful chemicals can get into the earth or air, polluting the environment around us and affecting people’s health.

Apple, for example, now recycle people’s used products in China when they are buying new ones. The company will test and repair the used ones and sell them at lower prices. To help reduce e-waste, we can also take computers and phones to see if companies offer recycling programs.

【1】Which of the following can become e-waste?

    A. Computers. B. Vegetables.

    C. Clothes.     D. Plastic bags.

【2】According to the passage, how much e-waste did China produce in 2014?

    A. 41.8 million tons.   B. 6.5 million tons.

    C. 7.1 million tons. D. 6 million tons.

【3】If you buy a new mobile phone, what shouldn’t you do with the old one?

    A. Throw it away immediately.

    B. Repair the old one.

    C. Sell it at a lower price.

    D. Take it to a recycling company.

Probably not. But that’s what kids in Yemen are 3 (experience). Experts said Yemen is going to be the 4 (one) country in the world to run out of water. According to a report, the capital, Sana, will run out of drinking water as early as 2025.

Because of the 5 (short), the water company often cuts the water supply. Hannan, 6 18-year-old girl from Lahej, told Times: “In a good week we’ll have a water supply all week. But then the following week there will be water only for a day or two.”

Hannan said only 7 people have enough water to use. They can buy water from the shops or from the water trucks. Private 8 (company) own the trucks. They travel around the city every day to sell water — at very high prices. “A lot of people can’t 9 [ə'fɔ:d] it,” she said.

The 10 ['gʌənmənt] is thinking of making use of sea water. But it will cost a lot and it may not happen soon enough to help the people of Yemen.
