四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   Running in Cold Weather Improves Performance

Cold weather during winter months may keep many people from leaving home and running in the open air. However, a new study shows that the drop in temperature is a good reason to run. In fact, researchers say, running in cold weather helps improve one’s performance.

Many people say running in the winter can be difficult. Two reasons are the low temperatures and bitter winds. Yet many runners might find it easier than running in hot weather. That could be because lower temperatures reduce stress on the body. When you run in cold weather, your body loses less water than in warmer conditions. The body needs less water on a cold day than in warm weather. This information comes from sports scientists at St. Mary’s University in London.

John Brewer is a professor of applied sport science at St. Mary’s. For this study, he and other researchers put a group of people into a room they called an “environmental chamber”. The researchers then recreated summer and winter weather conditions in the room. The test subjects were asked to run 10,000meters under both conditions. Brewer says he and his team recorded biological measurements of the runners. “We’ve got a group of subjects into the environmental chamber, we’ve changed the conditions to recreate the summer or winter and we’ve got them to run a 10km under both of those conditions and taken various measurements(测量)on each runner while they’ve been completing their 10km.”.

They found that the runners lost water by around 30.38% more in those hotter conditions. Besides, Brewer says every movement runners make produces heat. He explains that one way in which we lose heat is by sweating(出汗). He says the body also loses heat by transporting the blood to the surface of the skin. “That heat builds up in the body and can be really damaging unless you can lose that heat. And it’s much harder to lose heat when the environment is warm as well.” And they found how they felt their perception of heat-was around a third lower when they were running in cold conditions. The body does not have to work as hard to pump blood to the skin’s surface  Several websites note that the most important thing for people who run in cold conditions is to wear the right clothing. Keeping as dry as possible is the most important when exercising in low temperatures. So, if you are a runner, don’t let winter weather keep you indoors. Simply get ready for the low temperatures and start running

1According to the passage, John Brewer probably agrees that  ________

A.people should run 10,000meters in winter

B.running in winter is good for your heart

C.people who run in winter like to wear thick clothing

D.running in cold conditions is better than in warm

2What can we infer from the passage  ________

A.Running can help us lose heat B.Running in cold weather is beneficial to our body

C.The heat can damage our body D.The body does not have to work to pump blood

3What is the writer's main purpose in writing this passage ________

A.To introduce a research on running by Brewer

B.To explain why running in winter is difficult for people

C.To encourage people to run outside during winter months

D.To advertise the new websites on running he created

    ABOUT THE BLACK BEAR

Description: Black body and head, brown nose, and large ears that stick out

    •Size: 150 to 600 pounds, 4.5 to 6.5 feet long

    •Living space: Heavily wooden area

    •Food: Plants and small animals

Imagine this situation: You go out to your backyard, and you see a bear smelling your rubbish bin. Or you go into your garage(车库) to get your bike and find a bear there. What would you do? People in some parts of Florida think about these situations a lot. They have been running into black bears more and more often. This is frightening and dangerous for both bears and people.

The number of cases of people and bears running into each other has gone up. In 1978, just one case was reported. In 2002, 1,340 cases were reported. These cases are called “conflicts”. Studies show that the number of conflicts in Florida is going up.

Some people think that human-bear conflicts are going up in Florida because there are more bears. Actually, it’s just the opposite. The number of bears is going down. In the early 1900s, there were about 12,000 black bears in Florida. Today, no one is really sure how many black bears are left. People think the number is from 1,500 to 3,000. So why are human-bear conflicts increasing so rapidly? There aren’t more bears, but there are more people.

There are many people who want to protect the Florida black bear. Here are some of the things that people in Florida are doing:

Teaching school children about the Florida black bear with a special program that includes a slide-show, games, and activities.

Choosing carefully where roads are built or widened so that wild animals will not be harmed by the traffic.

Holding a yearly festival for families with arts, food, and information on the bear.

1What does the underlined word “conflicts” in the second paragraph mean?

    A. Bears living in Florida in 2002.

    B. Studies of black bears in Florida.

    C. Fights between people and black bears.

    D. Cases of people and bears running into each other.

2Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

    A. Black bears live in thick woods.

    B. People feel afraid when they run into a bear.

    C. There are about 3,000 black bears left in Florida now.

    D. The reason why human-bear conflicts are going up is that there’re more people.

3To protect black bears, people in Florida are .

    A. trying to learn more about black bears

    B. teaching students how to take good care of bears

    C. building and widening new roads for black bears

    D. giving back black bears more food and living space

  • 26、Tons of people enjoy listening to different types of music while they paint, write, or draw. Many believe that music helps get the creative juices flowing, but an international new study is challenging that view by putting volunteers through a series of tests.

The study was performed as a joint partnership between psychologists at three universities in Europe. The results suggest that any task that relies on verbal(与文字有关的) creativity was impaired(削弱) when listening to any type of music.

Subjects(受试者) in the project all spoke English as their first language, and had no problem in their sight or hearing.

The tasks were simple word games. For example, subjects were given three words, such as dress, shine, and flower. Then, they were asked to find a single word which could be connected with all three to form a common phrase or word. The single word, in this case, would be “sun” (sundress, sunflower, etc).

Subjects completed the tasks in either a quiet room, or while they were played background music with foreign lyrics(歌词), English lyrics, and instrumental music with no lyrics at all.

The research team also tested the library background noises, but found that such noises had no great difference in subjects’ creativity. The study’s authors believe that was the case because library noise is a “steady state” environment which is not as disruptive(扰乱的). Music with or without lyrics is characterized by changes in pitch or tone.

It’s worth mentioning that even familiar music with well known lyrics impaired subjects’ creativity, even when subjects declared that they worked or studied with music on regularly and the music improved their overall mood.

So next time you sit down for a study session with those lo-fi beats, you may be giving your brain something else to focus on rather than your work.

【1】What does “that view” in Paragraph 1 refer to?

A.Listening to music while working is so common.

B.People enjoy listening to different types of music.

    C.Listening to music impairs creativity.

    D.Music helps improve our creativity.

【2】According to the word game in Paragraph 4, if volunteers are given three words “foot, base, basket”, what is the single word?

    A.Case.

    B.Line.

    C.Print.

    D.Ball.

【3】Which of the following had no great difference in performance of the verbal tasks?

A.Familiar music with well known lyrics.

B.The quiet and library noise conditions.

    C.Background music with foreign lyrics.

    D.Instrumental music with no lyrics.

【4】According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?

A.Music cannot disrupt the verbal working memory of the disabled.

B.Different kinds of music impair different parts of our brains.

C.You may do your best work without listening to music.

D.Library noises are characterized by changes in pitch or tone.

Facts you don’t know about animals

People have already known a lot about animals. However, there are still some things about animals that may surprise you. Here are some facts about animals you probably didn’t know.

    Cows

Cows do have best friends and feel stressed (焦虑的) when they are separated (分开). Sometimes they even a1 humans when they are too nervous and angry. However, scientists also found that cows are very social animals and a cow always makes friends with other cows in the herd (兽群). When a cow is with its friend, its heart rate is reduced compared with when it is a2 or with a cow from another herd.

    Penguins

During breeding (繁殖) season, a male penguin will offer a pebble (卵石) to a female penguin as a g3. If she takes it, they will become partners. When the female penguin lays an egg, she and her husband may c4 it on their feet, because some penguins don’t build nests.

    Crocodiles

When crocodiles eat something, they always swallow () their prey. They don’t chew it like other animals. To help with digestion (消化), they swallow stones which grind up the food in their stomachs. But these stones can h5 be defecated (排泄掉), so they may stay in their stomachs all their lives.

    Elephants

Elephants use plants to get rid of p6 or other illness. Scientists once found a pregnant (怀孕的) elephant in Kenya who kept eating a kind of plant for a few days, while this kind of plant was not part of her regular d7. Four days later, she could give birth to a baby elephant quietly. The same plant was used by the local women to help with labor (分娩).

Do you find these facts amazing? Maybe you can introduce some of them to your friends and see how surprised they are when they know the facts!
