六、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、People are always interested in what the future will look like. The answers are quite different and some further discussions about the future predictions are here.

How can we know what the future will look like?

To understand the future, you must know the past. What took us to today and what changed along the way? The world has changed a lot during the past 200 years, but the basic (基本的) needs are the same as those 200 years ago. The basic needs are food, sleep, the feeling of love and care. Will they change in the next 200 years? No.

Why do we need to predict the future?

First, we need to start to think: What kind of future do we want for ourselves? What kind of future do we want to pass on to our kids? And then we need to know: What decisions do we need to make today? What decisions will give the best result in the future? If we have good answers to all these questions, we can live better.

If you take away something that people are using for everyday life, it’ll be difficult for them to live. Then you’ll know what is truly important. The invention that have affected (影响) most people are the telephone, television, computer, car and Internet in the last 200 years. We of course have a lot of other great inventions (发明), like new medicine, faster transportation and so on.

  • 23、If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they will become weak, when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Yet many people do not seem to know that memory (记忆) works in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance (机会) to become strong.

If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his own fault (过错). But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents may be blamed (责备), and few of us know that it is just his own fault. Have you ever found that some people can't read or write but usually they have better memories? This is because they cannot read or write, they have to remember them. Since they cannot write them down in a small notebook, they have to remember days, names, songs and stories. Therefore, their memory is being exercised the whole time.

So if you want to have a good memory, learn from the people: practise remembering things in a way as other people do.

  • 24、One day, I bumped into(撞上) a stranger as he walked by me. “Oh, excuse me,” I said. He replied with a smile and said, “Please excuse me, too. I wasn’t watching out for you.” We apologized(道歉) and went our own ways.

Later that day, when I was cooking, my daughter was standing too close to me. When I turned to reach for some milk, I nearly knocked(撞倒) her over. “Move out of the way!” I shouted. She walked away sadly. But I didn’t feel like I had to apologize to her.

While I was in bed that evening, my husband said to me, “While dealing with a stranger, you were polite, but with the daughter you love, you were unkind. Your daughter brought you some flowers that she picked herself this afternoon. You’ll find them in the kitchen by the door. Have you seen the tears in her eyes?”
