六、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   It was a village in India. The people were poor. However, they were not unhappy. After all, their forefathers(祖先) had lived in the same way for centuries.

Then one day, some visitors from the city arrived. They told the villagers there were some people elsewhere who liked to eat frog's legs. However, they did not have enough frogs of their own, and so they wanted to buy frogs from other places.

This seemed like money for nothing. There were millions of frogs in the fields around, and they were no use to the villagers. All they had to do was catch them. Agreement was reached, and the children were sent into the fields to catch frogs. Every week a truck arrived to collect the catch and hand over the money. For the first time, the people were able to dream of a better future. But the dream didn't last long.

No one noticed the change at first, but it seemed to be more insects around recently. So they had to use the money they made to buy pesticides(杀虫剂)and medicines. Soon there was no money left.

The change was hardly noticed at first, but it seemed as if the crops were not doing so well. More worrying was that the children fell ill more often, and, there seemed to be more insects around lately.

Then the people realized what was happening. It was the frog. They hadn't been useless. They had been doing an important job-eating insects. Now with so many frogs killed, the insects were increasing more rapidly. They were damaging the crops and spreading(传播) diseases.

Now, the people are still poor. But in the evenings they sit in the village square and listen to sounds of insects and frogs. These sounds of the night now have a much deeper meaning.

1From Paragraph 1 we learn that the villagers _____.

    A.worked very hard for centuries

B.dreamed of having a better life

    C.were poor but somewhat content

D.lived a different life from their forefathers

2Why did the villagers agree to sell frogs?

    A.The frogs were easy money.

B.They needed money to buy medicine.

C.They wanted to please the visitors.

D.The frogs made too much noise.

3What might be the cause of the children's sickness?

    A.The crops didn't do well.

    B.There were too many insects.

    C.The visitors brought in diseases.

    D.The pesticides were overused.

4What can we infer from the last sentence of the text?

A.Happiness comes from peaceful life in the country.

B.Health is more important than money.

C.The harmony between man and nature is important.

D.Good old days will never be forgotten.

  • 22、   What does an astronaut eat in apace? This is a question that will puzzle many people. In the early space travel years, astronauts ate dehydrated (脱水的) foods that were eaten through straws (吸管). In today’s space-age, the food that they eat is quite different. They eat food in the same way as people do on Earth.

Astronauts are able to prepare and eat a variety (多样化) of foods in space now. Some can be eaten in their natural form, like fruits, while some need to add water, like noodles. However, there are no fridges, so the food has to be prepared and eaten without being stored for a long time. When the astronauts are hungry, they simply eat the food by opening the food packages and eat with a fork, knife and spoon.

Just like people on Earth, astronauts also eat three meals a day which include breakfast, lunch and dinner. Sometimes they also eat snacks. The US space agency NASA has found out that an astronaut’s diet reduces (减少) by about 70% on a space mission, though he has a wide range of foods to choose from like nuts, chicken, beef, seafood and candies. Drinks in the spaceship include coffee, tea, juices, and lemonade.

Astronauts can also ask for a special food that they would like to have in space. Scientists are always experimenting and trying out different space foods that can be offered to astronauts when on space missions (任务).

1In the early space travel years, astronauts ________.

    A. ate dehydrated food

    B. drank milk through straws

    C. ate the same food as on Earth

    D. ate with a fork, knife and spoon

    2In today’s space age, astronauts ________.

    A. can only eat fruit and noodles

    B. can’t eat anything in a natural way

    C. can use the fridges to store the food

    D. can eat many kinds of food like on Earth

3Scientists are always experimenting and trying out different space foods that can be offered to Astronauts ________.

    A. when they exercise

    B. when they are sick

    C. when on space missions

    D. when they relax themselves

  • 23、In 1901, H. G. Wells, an English writer, wrote a book describing a trip to the moon. When the explorers (探险者) landed on the moon, they discovered that the moon was full of underground cities. They expressed their surprise to the "moon people" they met. In turn, the "moon people" expressed their surprise. "Why are you travelling to outer space when you don't even use your inner space?" they asked.

    H. G. Wells could only imagine the travel to the moon. In 1969, human beings really did land on the moon. People today know that there are no underground cities on the moon. However, the question that the "moon people" asked is still an interesting one. A growing number of scientists are seriously thinking about it.

Underground systems (体系) are already in place. Many cities have underground car parks. In some cities, such as Tokyo, Seoul and Montreal, there are large underground shopping areas. The "Chunnel", a tunnel connecting England and France, is now completed.

But what about underground cities? Japan's Taisei Corporation is designing a network of underground systems, called "Alice Cities". The designers imagine using surface space for public parks and using underground space for flats, offices, shopping and so on. A solar dome (太阳能穹顶) would cover the whole city.

Supporters of underground development say that building down rather than building up is a

good way to use the earth's space. The surface, they say, can be used for farms, parks, gardens, and wilderness. H. G. Wells's "moon people" would agree. Would you?

1The explorers in H. G. Wells's story were surprised to find that the "moon people"

    __________________.

    A. Discovering the moon's inner space.   B. Using the Earth's inner space.

    C. Meeting the "moon people" again.   D. Travelling to outer space.

3What kind of underground systems are already here with us?

    A. Offices, shopping areas, power stations.   B. Tunnels, car parks, shopping areas.

    C. Gardens, car parks, power stations.   D. Tunnels, gardens, offices.

4Which of the following is true?

    A. H. G. Wells travelled to the moon in 1901.

    B. People today know there are a lot of "moon people" and underground cities.

    C. In 1969, human beings landed on the moon.

    D. Scientists are seriously thinking about how to use the moon.

5What would be the best title for the text?

    A. Alice Cities--Cities of the Future   B. Space Travel with H. G. Wells

  • 24、   Classic books never go out of fashion. The book The Outsiders first came out in 1967. Although the book is old, it is still worth reading. It is written by US writer S.E.Hinton.

The book tells the story of a 14-year-old boy called Ponyboy Curtis. He struggles with difficult issues of right and wrong in a society where he is an outsider. The story took place in Oklahoma, US, in 1965.

In the book, the children are divided into two groups. One includes Curtis and Greasers. It is mostly made up of poor kids. They have longer hair and often smoke at a young age. The other group is called the Socs, which is made up of rich children. They wear expensive clothes and drive high-tech cars. Those two groups do not get along well. The book only shows us two weeks of the boys' life.

I was touched by the friendship among the boys. When any of them has a problem, the others will help. Although they are not well educated(教育), they are kind and brave. For example, when Johnny was hurt and in hospital, his friends visited him almost every day. They brought him food and told him interesting stories. I always dream of having a strong friendship like this.
