22、 Imagine a perfect day: the weather is good and everything seems fine. When, suddenly, your mobile phone loses its signal, the television has no programs, and you can't get online with your computer.
What has happened? These are just the types of problems a solar storm(太阳风暴) might cause. You may not think of storms as putting out society in danger. But today, a solar storm is as serious as other bad events, such as earthquakes.
A solar storm is caused by solar flares(太阳耀斑): large explosions(爆炸) near the sun that can give off lots of energy. The strong energy can stop the satellite systems(卫星系统) that control our computers, telecom networks and so on. These storms can even cause the power to go out for weeks or months.
In the past few months, scientists have recorded some of the strongest sun flares in years. The most recent one happened around Valentine's Day, 2011. It caused radio and satellite signals to go down in some northern cities in China.
“Solar flare activity is going to be much worse than what we've seen in the past. We're not talking about a few cities losing power, it could be half of the country, maybe more.”SolarStormWarning. com, a US website about space weather, warned.
Scientists say that little can be done to predict such a storm. Governments around the world are trying to work together before the next storm, although they are not sure when that may happen.

23、When people have different ideas or needs, conflicts (冲突) may happen. Naomi Drew, the writer of The Kids’ Guide to Working Out Conflicts: How to Keep Cool, Stay Safe, and Get Along, gives kids some helpful advice on getting on with friends.
Q1: A friend of mine often plays with our friends, but he has never invited me. What can I do?
A1: If a friend does something you don’t like, don’t be afraid to talk to him. Don’t be angry with him. Try to make him understand your feelings so that you can work through it together.
Q2: My friend is rude to other people. She said if I didn’t act(表现)like her, she would stop being my friend.

Q3: My friend and I argue (争论)a lot. Although we’ll be friends again soon, I don’t like it. What should I do?
A3:“Winning an argument”isn’t always worth (值得) it. Next time when you argue, let your friend“win”if the thing is not important to you. If you give in (让步) a little, so may your friend. And remember, probably your friend isn’t wrong. He or she just sees things differently.

24、 Sand is a common sight in the world. But you might not know that sand is also a useful resource (资源).
Sand is the second most-used resource in the world after water, the BBC reported. However, the UN said that sand is not limitless and that we might be running out of it.
Sand is made up of very small pieces of rock, soil and minerals (矿物质). It can take tens of thousands of years to form.
But now we are using sand more quickly than it is being formed. According to the BBC, we use about 15 billion tons of sand every year to build houses, roads and other things.
People also put sand in the sea to make new islands. Singapore, for example, is now 20 percent bigger than it was in 1965. Palm islands are three large man-made islands in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. They took 94 million cubic meters of sand to build.
If people keep using this much sand, it will run out in many places. For example, Vietnam may run out of construction (建造) sand by 2020, Live Science noted.
Since people need so much sand, they are trying to mine (开采) more of it. But this is bad for the environment. Mining sand may cause beaches to disappear and more floods to happen in places close to the sea. Also, this may affect the habitats (栖息地) of many plants and animals.
