六、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Thanksgiving Day was near. A first grade teacher gave her class a fun task——to draw a picture of something for which they were thankful.

Most of the students didn’t come from rich families, but many would still celebrate the holiday with turkey and other traditional customs(习俗). These, the teacher thought, would be the subjects of most of the students’ art. And they were, for the most part.

But one student named Douglas drew a different kind of picture. Douglas was a different kind of boy. He was often sad. While other children would play with each other during break time, he would stand closely by his teacher's side. There was pain behind his sad eyes. But what was it? One could only guess.

Yes, his picture was different. He drew a hand. Nothing else. Just an empty hand.

Other children started to guess whose hand it could be. One child guessed it was the hand of a farmer, because farmers raise turkeys. Another suggested a police officer, because police keep people safe. And so the discussion went on.

Finally the teacher walked over to Douglas'desk, bent down and asked him whose hand it was.

The little boy looked away and said, “It’s yours, teacher.”

She recalled(回想起) the times when she had taken his hand and walked with him here or there, and times when shed said things like “Take my hand Douglas, we’ll go outside” or “Let me show you how to hold your pencil.”

Douglas was most thankful for his teacher's hand.

1The teacher started this task to____________

A.see which students were from rich families.

B.help students remember to be thankful.

C.find out which students were good at drawing.

D.show that some traditions are out of date.

2What do we know about the boy____________.

A.Nobody wanted to be his friend B.The teacher didn't let him play

C.There were problems with his eyes D.Nobody knew why he was sad

    3What did the boy draw?

A.A turkey B.A farmer C.A police officer D.An empty hand

4With his picture, the boy tried to____________

A.show that he had a talent for drawing B.show that he liked Thanksgiving

C.express his thanks for his teacher D.help the teacher set up a discussion

  • 22、Like the special ebony sculpture in some African countries and the amazing patchwork quilt in America, papel picado is also another beautiful kind of art. This paper art began in Mexico. However, the thin paper didn't come from Mexico. In fact, it came from China. This paper was first introduced (介绍) to Mexico when Chinese people shipped (运输) things with the paper outside to stop them from breaking.

People living in Mexico soon had a lot of paper and they began using the paper to make the house more beautiful. The paper art continues to be popular to this day.

How do people make papal picado?

To make papel picado, artists first draw the pattern (图案) for the art. Next, they fold thin pieces of colorful paper. Folding many pieces of paper allows the artists to make the same pattern on all the pieces at the same time. This is important when you need to make a lot of the same paper cuttings. Then artists put the pattern on top of the paper to make the design (设计). Finally, cut through the paper.

How do people use papel picado today?

You can see the art in windows and doorways or streets at celebrations and during special holidays. The colors and patterns depend on different kinds of celebrations and holidays.

As with (正如) other kinds of art, people would like to keep the paper cuttings and enjoy them for many years. _________ In order to make the art last longer, some artists started using thicker paper or plastic (塑料). • 23、What is soil? It is the skin of the Earth. It supports all forms of our life. Nearly all our food comes from the soil. Some of us eat meat, some eat vegetables, but most animals live on plants. If there are no plants, we will have no vegetables, no animals and no meat.

Plants grow in soil with a dark colour. The dark soil is humus (腐殖土壤). Dead leaves, dead plants and animals’ waste make it, but it takes a long time. When the humus has been made, plants can grow well in it.

All soil needs food. Animals’ waste is the best food for the soil, but chemical fertilizers (化肥) are also very useful. The same crops should not be grown in the same place every year. A change of crops and the use of a good fertilizer will keep the land in good condition.

When the soil is dry, the wind blows it away. Sometimes heavy rain carries the humus down to a river. People should grow more and more trees and grass to stop wind from carrying the humus away. It takes hundreds of years to make humus, so we must save every bit of it. Without soil, how can we live?

  • 24、It is reported that some developed countries have shipped broken parts of computers to China. Such a thing can be found almost every day although it is against international laws. Last month Hong Kong officers found 131,000 kilograms of broken computers, TVs and phones sent from Japan. Things like these are called electronic waste, or e-waste. Dealing with them is not an easy job because dangerous poisons like mercury(汞)and lead(铅)can be found in them. Every time an old computer breaks down, it needs to be dealt with safely. But at present, broken computer parts are usually buried. It may be hundreds of years before they are really gone in the earth.

Many places in China are polluted by e-waste. Guiyu in Guangdong Province is one of them. This town is named as "the e-waste capital of the world". It has to deal with 1.5 million kilograms of e-waste each year, from which it makes 75 million yuan. But it comes at a cost. Many of the poisons in e-waste find their way into the environment. Plastic is burned outdoors and chemical water is poured into rivers. Greenpeace, an environmental group, has found the air, the earth and the rivers in Guiyu badly polluted. The Chinese government wants the country to develop, but in a way that doesn't do harm to the environment and people's life. This year, China passed a new environmental protection law, the strictest one we have ever had. Computer companies like Lenovo and Dell will be asked to take back their old computers. This is because the companies that make computers know best how to deal with them safely. Hopefully, the problem with e-waste will be solved in the near future.
