四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   Is there someone you hate? Well, maybe you don't really hate them. But you get really angry every time you think of them. If you don't let this anger go, it can turn into bitterness (痛苦).

Bitterness appears when we can't forgive  (原谅) someone who has hurt us or made us angry.

Someone might say or do something that hurts us. But instead of controlling the anger, we keep it deep inside. Before long, a bitter feeling begins to grow. We may think we're hurting that person by criticizing (指责) him or her often, but we're really only hurting ourselves.

Bitterness can not only lead to serious health problems such as heart disease, but also hurt our relationships with friends and family members. No one enjoys being around an angry person for very long.

If you see bitterness in your life, here are some ways to deal with it.

    ●Accept it

Instead of trying to deny your anger, make it clear to yourself and accept it. See your anger for what it is and quickly deal with it.

    ●Stop making excuses for it

You may feel you have a right to be angry. You may think you're right and the other person is wrong. You may even secretly enjoy making the other person look bad. But in the end, bitterness hurts you much more than the other person. The bitterness will hold you back, and the other person will go on with his or her life.

    ●Forgive and forget it

You probably can't completely put the anger out of your mind. But you can decide to forgive the other person. Forget it and move on. You'll enjoy better health and peace of mind.

1According to the passage, we might get angry when someone ________.

A.holds us back B.forgets us C.doesn't like us D.does hurt us

    2Bitterness comes from________.

A.our health problems like heart disease B.the anger that lives deep inside our mind

C.the person who says something that hurts us D.our relationships with friends and family members

3The best way to deal with the bitterness is to ________.

A.make the person who hurts us look bad B.hate the person who hurts us very often

C.accept that you are hurting the other person D.forgive the person who hurts us and forget it

4What can we learn from the passage?

A.We should enjoy someone who hurts us.

B.We should pay more attention to our friends.

C.The peace of mind is more important than the hurt itself.

D.It's better to let bitterness go along with the other person.

5What do you think the writer of this passage is like?

A.Serious and mean B.Understanding and active

C.Stressed and afraid D.Knowledgeable and strict

  • 25、The clothes you wear. The food you eat. The color of your bedroom walls. Where you go and how you get there. The people you hang around with. What time you go to bed. What do these things have in common? You’re asking. They’re just a few examples of many hundreds of things that your parents controlled for you when you were a child.

As a kid, you didn’t have a say in everything; your parents made decisions about everything from the cereal you ate in the morning to the pajamas you wore at night. And it’s a good thing, too—kids need this kind of protection and assistance because they aren’t mature enough to take care of themselves and make careful decisions on their own.

But finally, kids grow up and become teens. And part of being a teen is developing your own identity (身份认同)—one that is separate from your parents’. But as you change and grow into this new person who makes your own decisions, your parents have a difficult time adjusting (调整) .They aren’t used to the new you yet—they only know you as the kid who had everything decided for you and didn’t mind.

In many families, it is this adjustment that can cause a lot of fighting between teens and parents. And issues like the type of friends you have or your attitudes to partying can cause bigger quarrels, because your parents still always want to protect you and keep you safe, no matter how old you are.

The good news about fighting with your parents is that in many families the arguing will lessen as parents get more comfortable with the idea that their teen has a right to certain opinions. It can take several years for parents and teens to adjust to their new roles, though. In the meantime, focus on communicating with your parents.

Sometimes this can feel impossible—like they just don’t see your point of view and never will. But talking and expressing your opinions can help you gain more respect from your parents and you may be able to reach compromises (和解) that make everyone happy. For example, if you are willing to clean your room in order to stay out an hour later. Keep in mind, too, that your parents were teens once and that in most cases, they can relate to what you’re going through.

【1】A lot of fighting breaks out between teens and parents because ________.

A.parents aren’t used to losing control of kids

B.teens like to have everything decided for them

C.parents get angry at teens not respecting them

D.teens are eager to develop their own identity

【2】In the author’s opinion, parents control teens in order to ________.

A.prevent them from having their own ideas

    B.protect them from being hurt

C.make them respect parents in the family

D.make sure that children have a good future

【3】Which of the following teenagers’ questions does the author try to answer?

A.What do parents control their children for?

B.When do parents take care of their children?

C.How do I get rid of my parents’ control?

D.Why do I fight with my parents so much?

  • 26、Joe was an old man. The 75-year-old lived very happily in a village and had a beautiful family. His children grew up and moved to different cities. Joe had four grandchildren, and they visited him during their holidays.

During one vacation, Joe was preparing his home for the kids: cleaning and buying their favorite foods. After he finished working, he realized he lost his favourite watch. The watch was a gift from his wife when their first child was born. Joe treasured the watch very much, especially after his wife’s death. He was very upset.

When his grandchildren came, they promised him they would find the watch.

One granddaughter asked, “Grandpa, do you remember when you saw the watch last before it went missing?”

“I guess when I was cleaning the barn (谷仓).”Joe replied.

The children looked for more than two hours with Joe, but they could not find it. The kids were also sad, but they tried to comfort (安慰) their grandfather.

One grandson went back to the barn to search again. Joe asked why he was going there a second time. But the little boy just asked the others not to follow him and to remain silent.

He was there for about fifteen minutes and then rushed to his grandfather. He found the watch and happily gave it to Joe.

Joe was surprised and asked how he was able to find it. The little boy replied, “I sat there without making a noise, and the barn was so silent. After a few minutes, I heard the ‘tick, tick’ sound and found the watch.”
