In many parts of the world, farmers and their families live in villages or towns. In the United States, each farm family lives in its own fields. Usually their neighbours live far away. It’s hard for them to see each other on weekdays. Their children take school buses to the nearest schools. These schools are only for the farm families in this area. In some areas, there are small schools for a few farm families, and the children walk to schools.
Life keeps changing for everyone, so do farmers. Today there are cars, good roads, radios, television sets and there are modern machines for farming. All of these are changing farm life.

25、The game of Go (围棋) was one of the four greatest artistic types in Chinese culture. It is not only a competitive event of the mind, but also a board game of entertainment.
Created in China more than four thousand years ago, Go was introduced to Korea and Japan over 1,000 years ago and has become a favorite activity of many people there. Today, Go still serves as an important way of cultural exchange among people in many Eastern and Western countries. Players in these countries take part in many international games every year.
The game of Go has many meanings for real life. It symbolizes (象征着) a square world of round pieces in black and white. There are 181 black pieces and 180 white ones in total. While the board is fixed, the pieces can be placed in millions upon millions of different ways, just as life in the real world may take many turns. The proper placement of each tiny Go piece is similar to how one might find proper solutions to problems in life.
Go pays much attention to peaceful competition and coexistence (共存). In a game of Go, the players do not wipe out each other’s pieces. Instead, they simply try to win a larger share of space while allowing the other side some space. However, in chess and Chinese chess, the players try to wipe out as many of the other side’s pieces as possible. The one who forces the other side’s commander (主帅) into a dead corner then wins the game. Therefore, Go carries deeper cultural and philosophical (哲学的) meanings.

26、May 23rd, 2019
Dear Principal Becker,
I'm David Brown, a student from Grade 8. I'm sitting in the classroom to write you this letter because I really have something to say about the school lunchtime.
Well, I know that school is for learning. It is important to have good reading and Maths skills. But I think school is also important for another reason. It helps people learn to get along with others.
It may seem that lunchtime is not important. As you see, lots of us spend most lunchtimes just talking with our friends. But this activity is more important than it looks.
I'm learning how to get along with others. I'm learning how to solve problems. I'm finding out new things from others. I'm learning how to say sorry. These are all important skills to learn.
My problem is that the time for lunch keeps getting shorter. I know this is happening so we can spend more time in class learning. But please do not forget that we are also learning at lunchtime. We are learning people skills. It is important that we have enough time to spend with our friends.
I really hope that you can make our lunchtime longer. A little more time spent with friends each day would benefit everybody.
Yours,
David Brown

27、The ocean is not a quiet place. This is partly caused by sea animals. They use sound to find what they eat, whom they play with, or which place they move towards. But noise from human activities is increasingly troubling the lives of ocean animals.
According to scientists, loud noise may increase mass strandings (大规模搁浅)of sea animals. Researchers recorded only five of these events in the first half of the 20th century. From 1950 to 2004, they recorded more than 1,200 mass strandings. This is perhaps because of the use of sonar (声呐) underwater. Another main reason of loud underwater noise is pile driving (打桩). Piles are supports for bridges, oil and gas producing areas. They’re driven deep into the floor of the ocean. Driving in a single pile can take several hours and as many as 5,000 hits. This process creates a lot of noise.
To restrain (抑制) that noise, some companies are making use of tiny bubbles (气泡). A single bubble is easily broken. However, the bubble wall can make pile driving quieter. The bubble wall is usually created in this way: A tube (管) is placed in a ring around a pile. Air is then let out through closely spaced openings on the tube. When the bubbles rise, they act as walls and take in some of the noise. Some more of the sound comes back and becomes stuck inside the wall. Such bubble walls are really helpful.
Other changes to pile driving can help as well. For example, people can take breaks in pile driving and let animals travel through.
Our noise in the ocean is causing big problems. But small changes in our behavior can make a big difference to animals’ lives in the world’s oceans.

29、"The grass looks greener on the other side of the fence." That's an old in English. It means other places often look better, more interesting than the place you live. Some people worry young Chinese are beginning to feel that way. They see young Chinese ignoring 忽视Chinese culture and, instead, Japanese cartoon books, watching Korean soap operas and even celebrating western holidays.
Foreign books and soap operas are good, Chinese writers and actors are just as good. As for holidays, Christmas is nice, but it can have the meaning for Chinese that Spring Festival has, and the West has nothing to compare with Mid-autumn Festival. And let's not forget the part of Chinese culture I like best: friendliness. Not all countries are as as China.
It's good to enjoy other cultures and to learn them, but they cannot replace your own culture. It's good to look on the other side of the fence, but you take a good long look. You will find that the grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence.
