He was near his home, and so he went along the road without a light. When a policeman saw this, he stopped the old carter.

"Where's your light?" asked the policeman. "No one may take a cart along a road at night without a light. You know that. You've broken the law.”

"I had a light," said the old man, "but it has just gone out."

"I don't believe that story," said the policeman. He took out a book and got ready to write. "What's your name and where do you live?" he asked.

  • 25、Lionel Wallace told me that the first time he saw the door in the wall, he was five years of age.

“I remember it was autumn. My mother was dead, and my father was busy. I spent a lot of time on my own without my governess(管家). I can’t remember exactly where I was when I saw the door in the wall. I was in the poorest part of town, but behind that green door was an amazing garden. What was strange was that I felt l knew the place. It was like coming home. And then a little girl of my own age came up to me. We walked together through the garden. Monkeys came up and played with us. I was a lonely child and now. I had playmates.

And then a woman came and took me into a large room. She opened a large book for me to see. The pages were full of pictures in which I saw my mother and the street we lived on. Finally, there was a picture of me in the poor street with its small, dirty shops. I was crying because l was not with my new friends and couldn’t find the way back to them. I realized I wasn’t looking at a page in the book. I was bark in that street, alone and unhappy.

When I got home, my governess was very angry with me for being so late. She told my father and he that punished me. I tried to explain but they didn’t believe me. My father said I was too imaginative and took all my books away.”

I asked Lionel if he tried to find the door again. “No,” he said. “I had no chance. My governess was with me all the time. Then one day, when I was looking for a different way to school, I found the green door again. I was so excited that I told one of the boys   named Hopkins. And he told the other boys. They didn’t believe and asked me to take them to the door in the wall. But I couldn’t find it. Later, I found it three more times, but I didn’t stop to open it because I was going to meet my girlfriend. I was more interested in seeing her than in the door. I decided to come back to the door another day. But the door was not there.”

This was the last conversation that I or anyone who knew him had with Lionel Wallace. He simply disappeared. The question we all ask ourselves, of course, is did he find the door and go in and never come out again? Or is there another reason for his disappearance? We shall never know.

【1】What did Lionel say was strange about the garden?

    A.There were wonderful animals

    B.A girl played with him.

C.He seemed to come here before.

    D.It was an amazing garden.

A.While he was on his way to school.

B.While he was hurrying to meet his girlfriend.

C.While he was playing with Hopkins.

    D.While he was going home.

【3】Which is the correct order of the story?

① Lionel told the writer about seeing the door.

    ② Lionel disappeared.

③ Lionel was walking alone in a poor part of the city.

④ Lionel took the boys to the door but didn’t find it.

    A.③④①②

    B.①③④②

    C.①②③④

    D.③①②④

【4】What did the writer want to know at the end of the story?

    A.Why Lionel was telling lies.

B.If Lionel had found the door again.

    C.Who Lionel had married.

D.Where he could find the door.

  • 26、Want to make a difference in your community? Becoming a zero waste volunteer is the way to go!

    Join a community garden

So many people don’t know where their food comes from. Growing food by yourselves teaches you the true value of food. What’s more, there is no need to pack the food you grow in the garden. Offer your time to help support a garden in your neighborhood. You’ll get to meet all kinds of people there, and possibly begin a conversation about zero waste lifestyle.

Lead or join a neighborhood clean-up

Usually, litter left unattended (无人看管的) will pollute our water systems. Even worse, any litter (in the ocean or on the ground) can be eaten by animals. This causes them to die of hunger slowly and painfully. Getting a group together to pick up trash (垃圾) around the neighborhood is a great way to combat this problem.

    ___________________

Going to a town hall meeting is a great idea. Because you can see and hear the problems in your community. Besides, you may even be able to speak at a town hall meeting as a guest speaker telling other people about zero waste lifestyle.

    Organize a zero waste meeting

It’s so important to have a support group filled with people who also love zero waste lifestyle. Although online community is great, it cannot compare to real life support groups. If you want to gather people in your neighborhood to talk all things about zero waste, consider organizing a meeting. Just choose a place to meet (a local cafe works well), choose a date and time, and put up a notice on the Internet. You’ll get surprises!

【1】If a person joins a community garden, he or she can _____________.

①teach himself or herself the true value of food by growing food

    ②stop animals from eating litter

③talk about zero waste lifestyle with others

④give a speech about zero waste lifestyle

    A.①②

    B.②③

    C.①③

    D.③④

【2】The underline word “combat” in the passage probably means “_____________”.

    A.fight against

    B.get used to

    C.look through

    D.come up with

【3】Which can be put in _____________.

    A.Bring your own problem

    B.Host a zero waste workshop

    C.Become a guest speaker

D.Go to a town hall meeting

【4】From the last paragraph, we can know that _____________.

A.a local cafe is too noisy for us to organize a meeting

B.a real life support group is better than an online community

C.a support group needs members who disagree with each other

D.organizing a meeting can educate the people in our community

  • 27、Dear Alice,

You really have two different questions here, so well discuss one of them at a time.

Your problems at school may be a result of a number of things. You dont say much about how these classmates get along with each other. Its possible that all the students are feeling a little cautious (谨慎的) in the first term.

Its also possible that the others are unkind. If this is so, you have to find out why you are the class outsider.

In your letter you say you often offer to help others with their work. Is it possible that your classmates dont understand your offers? Could it seem that you were trying to buy friends with these offers?

Is it possible that you took no notice of your classmates when you had your good friend near you? They may have felt hurt at that time. It may take a time for them to believe in you if so. Try to ask one classmate directly what the problem is. If you hear a negative (负面的) answer, at least youll know what to do.

    Yours truly,

    Shelia

    1Who writes the letter?

    A. Alice     B. her classmate

    C. Shelia   D. her teacher

2 From the letter we know that Alice was very _______________.

    A. lucky     B. unkind C. fair   D. unhappy

3 In the letter Sheila talked about _________ possible reasons for Alices problems.

    A. four     B. six   C. seven D. eight

4From the letter we can conclude (得出结论) that _______________.

    A. Alice wasnt pleased with her teachers.

    B. Alices parents made her study too hard.

    C. Alice didnt get along well with her classmates.

    D. Alice didnt want to go to school any more.

五、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 28、阅读短文,根据语篇要求填空,使短文通顺、意思完整。每空限填一词。

An old man 【1】 fishing on the bank of a river. A child came to see him fishing. The old man was really good at fishing and it didn’t take long for 【2】 to catch a full basket of fish. The old man saw that the child was very cute, and he wanted to give her a whole basket of fish. But the child shook her head. The old man was surprised and asked, “Why don’t you want the fish?”

The child answered, “I want the fishing rod (竿) in your hands. ”

The old man asked, ‘’Why do you want the rod?”

“It doesn’t take long to eat all the fish in a basket. 【3】 if I have the fishing rod, I can go fishing by myself and I won’t be afraid of not having any more fish to eat. ”

I think you will certainly say that the child is very smart. Wrong! If she doesn’t know 【4】 to fish, she can not have fish to eat, even though she has the fishing rod. It’s useless to only have a fishing rod. Fishing skills are the most important, not the fishing rod. Too many people think that if they have a “fishing rod” in their life, they will no longer fear the wind and rain. They are just 【5】 the child, who thought that if she had a fishing rod, she would have fish to eat.
