South Korea held the 23rd Winter Olympic Games in 2018. In 2022, for the first time ever in the Games’ history, Beijing will become the first city to have hosted both the Summer and Winter Olympics.
China has come a long way and achieved(实现)many goals since it took part in the Winter Olympics for the first time in 1980. In this short period of time, China’s players have won medals in six of the event’s sports. Short track speed skating(短道速滑)has been an area of expertise(专长)for China.
China’s love for winter sports has been growing. The Ministry of Education has set a goal of building 5, 000 special schools by 2025 to improve winter sports education.
The government has also been encouraging primary and middle schools to add winter sports to their subjects. Many provinces and cities have already acted on this suggestion. Classes will be set up in schools in northern China to improve interest in winter sports. In southern China, schools can work with ice rinks(溜冰场)and winter sports clubs.

How would you feel if someone decided to take away your park? Well, that’s what’s happening in my community(社区). There’s a park that some people want to turn into a golf course(高尔夫球场). Let me tell you why I think it’s a bad idea.
First, a community park should open for everyone. But not everyone likes golf, so not everyone will get to use the course.
Second, to build the golf course, lots of playground equipment(设备) will have to be moved or knocked(敲) down, which is a waste of time and money. It’s also a waste of good equipment.
Third, what about giving young people something to do? Not all kids like golf. At the moment, the park has a skating place and a playground, which children like a lot. If you turn the park into a golf course, these kids won’t have anywhere to go and anything to do. This means that they will stay at home and turn on a video game instead of getting some exercise. It also means that they might be out on the street causing trouble. Wouldn’t it be better to give them something to do at the park?
Finally, golf is expensive. Building and maintaining(维护) a golf course will cost(花费) a lot of money. Who is going to pay to maintain the golf course?
Turning our park into a golf course is a bad idea. I hope we can have a community meeting before plans go any further.

23、For many people the subject of hiccups (嗝) is a joke, but for Harry Mendes, a fifteen-year-old schoolboy from Birmingham, it was something quite different.
His hiccups began one Sunday lunch time and continued day and night for two weeks. After the first week, Harry's parents took him to hospital, but it took another week for the doctors to cure his attack.
Harry, who is now back at school, described what happened to him.
“When I began to hiccup, I drank a glass of water but that didn't do any good. That evening I had hiccups every four seconds. We tried everything to stop them. I held my breath and drank cold drinks. My father even tried to give me a shock but that didn't work either.”
After a week of sleepless nights, he went to hospital. The doctors took an X-ray of his chest but they couldn't find anything wrong.
“They gave me some medicine and my hiccups slowed down, but it was another week before the medicine worked completely and my hiccups stopped.”
