  • 27、You’re standing at a city bus stop, waiting for a bus to arrive. You wait and wait. 【1】 But you haven’t seen one for at least 20 minutes. Finally, a bus full of people arrives. Just as you try to squeeze yourself in, you see another bus coming down the street, and another one behind it!

What’s going on? Why do buses always seem to come in bunches (成群) instead of at regular intervals (间隔) ?

【2】 They say that passengers tend to remember the few times when more than one bus arrives at a stop and to forget the many more times when a bus arrives alone.

However, experts who study traffic say that bunching really can happen quite easily. 【3】 If each stop had the same number of passengers waiting, the buses would keep to their schedule. But usually there are many people at a few stops and no one at others.

Suppose many people happen to gather at a particular stop. 【4】 So it gets delayed and the bus behind it catches up a bit. When the second bus arrives at the same stop, there has been less time for passengers to assemble (聚集), so the bus goes on its way quickly. Meanwhile, the first bus arrives at its next stop a little later than usual, so there’s been more time for passengers to join the crowd. 【5】 Once one bus catches up with the other bus, the two buses end up travelling together. If the route is a long one, a third bus could eventually catch up with the first two.

Check it out the next time you hop (跳上) a bus!

A.There’s supposed to be a bus every 10 minutes.

B.But you don’t know the exact time the bus will arrive.

C.The problem is the different numbers of people at the stops.

D.Some people claim that bus bunching doesn’t happen very often.

E.And soon after several more stops, the second bus catches up with the first.

F.Find the probability that the waiting time is longer than you expected.

G.It takes longer than usual for the passengers to board the first bus that arrives.

  • 28、Imagine you're standing in line to buy an afterschool snack at a store. You step up to the counter and the cashier scans your food. Next, you have to pay. But instead of scanning a QR code with your smartphone, you just hold out your hand so the cashier can scan your fingerprint. Or, a camera scans your face, your eyes or even your ear.

【1】 As technology companies move away from traditional password, biometric(生物识别) security, which includes fingerprint, face and voice ID, is becoming increasingly popular.

In 2013, Apple introduced the iPhone 5s, one of the first smartphones with a fingerprint scanner. Since then, using one’s fingerprint to unlock a phone and make mobile payments has become commonplace, bringing convenience to our lives. And since last year, Samsung has featured eye-scanning technology in its top smartphones, while Apple’s new iPhone X can even scan a user’s face.

【2】 “Biometrics, ideally, are good,” John Michener, a biometric expert, told tech website Inverse. “In practice, not so much.”

When introducing the new iPhone’s Face ID feature at Apple’s Keynote Event in September, Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president, said, “【3】

But it’s already been done. In a video posted on community website Reddit on Nov 3, two brothers showed how they were each able to unlock the same iPhone X using their own face, Quartz reported. And they aren’t even twins.

“We may expect too much from biometrics,” Anil Jain, a computer science professor at Michigan State University, told CBS news. “No security systems are perfect.”

Earlier this year, Jain found a way to trick biometric security. Using a printed copy of a thumbprint, she was able to unlock a dead person's smartphone for police.

“It’s good to see biometrics being used more,” Jain told CBS News, “because it adds another factor for security. 【4】

A.But despite its popularity, experts warn that biometrics might not be as secure as we’d imagined.

B.Security experts don’t think it absolutely necessary to use biometric technology.

C.But using multiple security measures is the best defense.

D.Now, this type of technology might not be far away.

E.If a person’s biometric information is stolen, that could have extremely serious consequences for that individual

F.The chance that a random person could look at your iPhone X and unlock it with his face is about one in a million.

  • 29、It’s true to say that technology makes our lives easier. However, increasingly scientists are saying that we need to give ourselves a break-----otherwise we put ourselves at risk(风险) of developing hundreds of health problems. Over the summer the days are longer and sunnier. Why not put this free time to good use and do something away from technology?

You could learn a new skill. There are hundreds of possibilities: cooking, a musical instrument or a new sport. Haven’t you always wanted to learn how to knit(编织)? You could use your free time to practice these new things, which might lead to an exciting opportunity in the future.

If you just want to relax, why not head to a beach? Take along your favorite book and relax on the sand, or go for a walk along the coastline. If you don’t live near a beach, you could go to your local park. Why not have a picnic, or try to explore some of the local wildlife? You could even get involved in the latest craze(狂热): adult coloring books! Coloring is a surprising thing to help you relax, and it can be a nice way to escape from the stress of modern life!

Whatever you choose to do, try something new! You might surprise yourself and find a hidden gift within you; you might make new friends along the way. Next time you find yourself changing TV channels(频道) from one to another without a clear purpose, think about what else you could spend your time doing.

    【1】According to the text, technology_______.

    A. makes our life harder

    B. may bring us illness

【2】In the author’s opinion, one of the best ways to relax is probably_______.
