二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Two friends have an argument that breaks up their friendship forever, even though neither one can remember how the whole thing got started. Such sad events happen over and over in high schools across the country. In fact, according to an official report on youth violence, “In our country today, the greatest threat to the lives of children and adolescents is not disease or starvation or abandonment, but the terrible reality of violence”. Given that this is the case, why aren’t students taught to manage conflict the way they are taught to solve math problems, drive cars, or stay physically fit?

First of all, students need to realize that conflict is unavoidable. A report on violence among middle school and high school students indicates that most violent incidents between students begin with a relatively minor insult (侮辱). For examplea fight could start over the fact that one student eats a peanut butter sandwich each lunchtime. Laughter over the sandwich can lead to insults, which in turn can lead to violence. The problem isn’t in the sandwich, but in the way students deal with the conflict.

Once students recognize that conflict is unavoidable, they can practice the golden rule of conflict resolution(解决): stay calm. Once the student feels calmerhe or she should choose words that will calm the other person down as well. Rude words, name—calling, and accusations only add fuel to the emotional fire. On the other hand, soft words spoken at a normal sound level can put out the fire before it explodes out of control.

After both sides have calmed down, they can use another key strategy (策略) for conflict resolution: listening. Listening allows the two sides to understand each other. One person should describe his or her side, and the other person should listen without interrupting. Afterward, the listener can ask non-threatening questions to clarify the speaker’s position. Then the two people should change roles.

Finally, students need to consider what they are hearing. This doesn’t mean trying to figure out what’s wrong with the other person. It means understanding what the real issue is and what both sides are trying to accomplish. For example, a shouting match over a peanut butter sandwich might happen because one person thinks the other person is unwilling to try new things. Students need to ask themselves questions such as these: How did this start? What do I really want? What am I afraid of? As the issue becomes clearer, the conflict often simply becomes smaller. Even if it doesn’t, careful thought helps both sides figure out a mutual solution.

There will always be conflict in schoolsbut that doesn’t mean there needs to be violence. After students in Atlanta started a conflict resolution program, according to Educators for Social Responsibility, “64 percent of the teachers reported less physical violence in the classroom; 75 percent of the teachers reported an increase in student cooperation; and 92 percent of the students felt better about themselves”. Learning to resolve conflicts can help students deal with friends, teachers, parents, bosses, and coworkers. In that way, conflict (冲突) resolution is a basic life skill that should be taught in schools across the country.

1This article is mainly about ________.

    A.the lives of school children

B.the cause of arguments in schools

    C.how to analyze youth violence

D.how to deal with school conflicts

2From Paragraph 2 we can learn that ________.

A.violence is more likely to occur at lunchtime

B.a small conflict can lead to violence

C.students tend to lose their temper easily

D.the eating habit of a student is often the cause of a fight

3Why do students need to ask themselves the questions stated in Paragraph 5?

A.To find out who is to blame.

B.To get ready to try new things.

C.To make clear what the real issue is.

D.To figure out how to stop the shouting match.

4After the conflict resolution program was started in Atlanta, it was found that ________.

A.there was a decrease in classroom violence

B.there was less student cooperation in the classroom

C.more teachers felt better about themselves in schools

    D.the teacher—student relationship greatly improved

  • 28、It was a dark night. Thick, dark, gray clouds had made sure that there was no starlight or moonlight to greet me as I walked out on my porch. Still, I kept the porch light off because I didn’t want to be surrounded by bugs and moths (飞蛾) on this sticky summer evening. I stood there for a while letting my eyes adjust to the lack of light. My dog stood beside me waiting patiently for me to start her walk. It was then, though, that I saw them. First one blink of light at the far end of the meadow was followed by another and then another. I smiled. I recognized them at once as my firefly friends, who always showed up this time of the year.

I got so much joy watching them first as a child and then as an adult. They never became dull or boring and they always filled me with delight. When I was little I used to sit in the grass and watch them slowly fly around blinking on and off. I never caught and put one in a jar as some kids did because I was afraid I might kill it and I never wanted to hurt these messengers (信使) of light. Their time on this earth was so brief as it was. l tried to enjoy them each night they were here. It always saddened me when they disappeared in the fall and it always made my heart sing when they reappeared the next summer.

I think I enjoy these little fireflies so much because I can see that we are like them in a lot of ways. Our time here on earth is brief. Often our light and love are more like on and off blinks rather than a steady shine. Let’s share our light and love while we are here then.

【1】Why did the author turn off his porch light?

    A.To walk his dog.

    B.To adapt to surroundings.

    C.To avoid some insects.

    D.To greet special friends.

【2】What can we know about fireflies?

    A.They always saddened the author.

B.Most kids caught and killed them.

C.The author watched them every night.

    D.They usually brightened the author.

【3】What does the author mainly want to convey through the story?

A.Value our short life in the world.

B.Protect fireflies as well as possible.

C.Devote ourselves as much as possible.

D.Share as many inspiring stories as possible.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

    A.Human’s Best Friends

    B.Messengers of Light

    C.A Special Summer Night

    D.Fireflies — Shinning Forever

  • 29、How to Sleep Well

Get some exercise at least three hours before bed.

Go for a run, hit the gym, take long walk, or do some stretches to help you get your heart rate going before you ease into bed. 1 Doing this at least three hours before bed will work. If you work out shortly before bed, then you will feel more awake than ever.

    2

If you want to make it easier for you to fall asleep, then you have to get used to falling asleep at around the same time every night and waking up around the same time every morning. That way, your body will get used to feeling more tired at the same time every night.

    Stick to the fifteen-minute rule.

3 If you’ve been lying in bed for more than fifteen minutes and are unable to fall asleep because you’re not tired, then try something else. If you continue to lie there, your mind will continue churning, and you may even work yourself up and feel even more awake. Once fifteen minutes have passed and you’re no closer to falling asleep, do something else. Read a magazine. Pace around your room. Sit up and stare at your hands. 4

Think about everything you did that day.

Another way to calm your mind is to go through everything you did that day, up to the most boring little detail. Try to break it down hour by hour and see how specific you can get and how many things you can end up remembering. 5

A.Don’t sleep late in the morning to stick to your regular habit.

B.This will work out your body and will make you more tired.

C.Do something new and you will start to fall asleep gradually.

D.Chances are that this alone will be boring enough to put you to sleep.

    E.Make your bed more comfortable.

    F.This rule is simple.

G.Go to bed around the same time every night.

五、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 32、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇 60 词左右的内容概要。

Nowadays, most citizens especially those who live in the metropolis(大都市), have to face the traffic jam everyday, which has become one of the major problems in the city.

There are many reasons for traffic jams. At first, because of the fact that the vehicles keep giving off harmful gases during traffic jams, the earth is becoming warmer and warmer. In addition, there is no doubt that traffic jams will affect the effectiveness of work because people have to spend much more time on the way to offices than necessary, and their work will be delayed. Apart from this, traffic jams might give rise to more traffic accident, which becomes a great danger to people's life.

Traffic jams are the result of the cars. Why? Personally I think the first reason may be the remoteness(遥远) of people's workplaces. As a result, people have to choose a tool rather than walking to work. Being flexible and relatively convenient, private cars become very attractive choices. What’s more, owning a private car, especially  in some developing countries, is a symbol of wealth and high social positions. In some developed countries it is also the symbol of independence and maturity( ). Anyway, owning and driving private cars are regarded by many people as basic human rights.

Undoubtedly, traffic jams must be dealt with properly. In my view, spending more money on public transportation systems may be an effective means. Needless to say, policies which encourage people to put these systems to full use, for example, giving certain subsidies( ), are necessary. In the meantime, measures to restrict(限制) the use of private cars, such as improving the taxes on cars or petrol should be taken.
