二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、If you ever find yourself yawning during a long Zoom video call, you may soon see yawns (打哈欠) spread to the other faces on your screen. Your pet under the desk may even join in.

Yawns can spread even between dogs and humans, as reported in 2008 and 2012. At the time, empathy — the ability to put yourself in another’s shoes — was one of most probable explanations. But new evidence suggests this reasoning is wrong.

To get a better understanding, researchers examined whether dogs’ yawning follows the same behavioral patterns with humans. For instance, people are both more likely to yawn with friends and families than with strangers. Besides, women, on average, report greater feelings of empathy (共情) than men, and catch yawns more frequently. But earlier this year, when researchers analyzed previous studies of yawning in dogs, they found no sign of these biases (偏向).

How often do dogs catch yawns from humans who are nice or not so nice to them? In another study, an experimenter would either play with or pet the dog, or plainly ignore the dog and avoid all eye contact. The anti-social experimenter would also show the dog a treat and command it to perform a trick, and then eat the treat themselves. But this did not affect the dogs’ yawning.

It’s still unclear why we yawn in the first place. One hypothesis is that yawning is a stress response that increases alertness by increasing blood flow to the brain and cooling it. “ Having yawns spread could help coordinate (协调) a group’s alertness. However, this is one nice evolutionary story that we don’t have that much evidence for. This isn’t to say your dog doesn’t have empathy at all. Instead, the study shows that animal minds are still a mystery. ” says Alex Taylor, an evolutionary psychologist.

【1】What is the purpose of Paragraph 1?

A.To introduce the topic of the passage.

B.To clarify the definition of yawn.

C.To describe yawning through an example.

D.To make an overall outline for the passage.

【2】What can be learned about dogs’ yawn from the passage?

A.Dogs catch yawn as a result of empathy.

B.Female dogs yawn much more than male dogs.

C.Dogs tend to yawn more after a familiar person.

D.Dogs’ yawning follows a different pattern from human’s.

【3】According to Paragraph 4, what may the anti-social experimenter do to dogs?

A.Ignore the dog even if it yawns.

B.Pet them with great care and love.

C.Make no eye contact with them at all.

D.Give a treat to them when they perform a trick.

【4】What can we infer from Alex Taylor’s words?

A.We yawn to spread alertness to others.

B.We need to explore more about yawns.

C.Dogs may have no empathy at all.

D.Human’s yawning behavior arose from evolution.

  • 23、   Over the past five decades mosquito populations in parts of the U.S. have skyrocketed by a factor of 10-a situation with worrying implications for the spread of diseases. And some places are apparently more easily affected than others. A new study in the Journal of Medical Entomology found that in Baltimore, low-income neighborhoods bear the biggest burden: they have not only more mosquitoes but also larger ones, which often survive longer. The problem most likely is rooted in the fact that Baltimore has nearly 17,000 abandoned buildings, which are concentrated in economically disadvantaged areas and serve as convenient mosquito-breeding zones.

Compared with prosperous blocks, low-income blocks have more abandoned buildings and are more heavily littered with thrown-away containers that collect standing water. And water that pools in abandoned buildings is protected by shade-which helps mosquitoes grow larger. Some cities take efforts to plant trees in low-income blocks but may actually worsen the problem: trees and bushes not only shade outdoor breeding(繁殖) pools but also shed leaves into the water and feed the mosquito larvae(幼虫), helping them grow bigger. Worse still, climate change could worsen the disease landscape by broadening habitats and lengthening the time every summer that mosquitoes can breed and survive.

Cities may, then, need to focus more mosquito-control efforts on these areas. Urban health departments typically educate homeowners about the importance of emptying water out of outdoor containers. But nobody empties those in or around abandoned buildings. “It is something that is fairly difficult for a city to address because it’s really expensive to go into private belongings and clean them up,” says Dina Fonseca, a molecular ecologist at Rutgers University. Yet if these belongings become breeding grounds not only for annoying mosquitoes but also for dangerous diseases, officials’ concepts may need to change.

1What does the phrase “a factor of 10” in Paragraph 1 refer to?

A.A major cause. B.A high rate.

C.A big concern. D.A special situation.

2Why is the spread of diseases relatively more serious in poor neighborhoods in Baltimore?

A.Because people there lack the awareness of waste sorting.

B.Because people there pay little attention to water protection.

C.Because more thrown-away containers are collected for reuse there.

D.Because more abandoned buildings serve as habitats for mosquitoes there.

3Which of the following solutions is well-intentioned but may result in opposite effects?

A.Planting more trees. B.Changing officials’ ideas.

C.Emptying water containers. D.Cleaning abandoned buildings.

4What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

A.To complain about the poor housing. B.To offer some treatments for diseases.

C.To appeal for mosquito-control efforts. D.To introduce a new species of mosquitoes.

  • 24、Researchers from Texas A&M University have developed a new bioremediation technology(生物整治技术)using plant-based material and fungi(真菌) that could clean up per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances.

Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substance, also called “forever chemicals” or PFAS, are found in soil, water, and even human and animal blood and may be harmful to humans and other species. They are found just about everywhere, from food wrappers to clothing. These chemicals may affect the immune system and may cause liver damage. Extremely high exposures to PFAS may also be linked to cancer.

“PFAS do not degrade easily in the environment and are poisonous even in a very low concentration,” said Susie Dai, associate professor from Texas A&M. “They must be removed and destroyed to prevent human exposure and negative impacts on the ecosystem. PFAS are so stable and they can occur in water in a very low concentration and you have to concentrate them and then destroy them.”

The only way to actually get rid of these “forever chemicals” is by burning them, which is a long and expensive process. But Texas A&M researchers have found a new way to use a plant-based material that adsorbs the pollutants. As explained by ScienceDirect, adsorption is “The use of solids for removing substances from either gas or liquid.” The adsorbent material is then consumed by microbial fungi. The team recently published their findings for the process framework, which they call RAPIMER, in Nature.

“The plant’s cell wall material serves as a framework to adsorb the PFAS,” Dai explained. “Then this material and the adsorbed chemical serve as food for a microbial fungus. Then it’s gone, and you don’t have the disposal problem.”

This sustainable PFAS clean-up system could be mass-produced for commercial use, leading to a better way to remove these chemical pollutants from the environment. It could also come in handy as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency considers creating PFAS thresholds(阈值) to its water quality standards.

【1】What is mainly talked about in paragraph 2?

    A.PFAS’s existing forms.

    B.PFAS’s doubtful origins.

    C.PFAS’s potential dangers.

    D.PFAS’s wide applications.

【2】What did Susie Dai say about PFAS?

    A.They are unstable.

B.They degrade easily in the environment.

C.They survive longer in water than in the air.

D.They are poisonous even in a low concentration.

【3】What happens after the plant-based material adsorbs the pollutants?

    A.The material gets eaten.

    B.The material becomes solid.

C.The material falls into small pieces.

D.The material goes on to adsorb fungi.

【4】What is the author’s attitude towards the plant-based material?

    A.Indifferent.

    B.Worried.

    C.Positive.

    D.Reserved.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

For years, I posted pictures of my grandson, cute animals and delicious dishes, and video clips of people’s funy behaviour and the like on Facebook. Moreover, I played a farm game or two on this popular social media site. I thought Facebook was for fun, but I never expected a post I saw on Facebook could have a significant impact on my life.

On November 12th, 2010, I was on my way to a conference by plane. Suddenly, I suffered a heart attack. Luckily, there were three doctors on board. In less than a minute, I was given first aid. I survived, but months later, I was still trying to come to terms with what had happened. So I began to record how I survived this incident as well as my ideas about life on Facebook daily, and started to care about Facebook posts that had nothing to do with fun.

One morning on March, 2011, I looked through my Facebook feed and saw a friend’s post. She wrote, “Let go of anything unrealistic and all activities that do not mirror your brightest intentions for yourself.” The words touched me greatly. That night, I copied them onto a clean piece of paper and taped it to my laptop.

Actually, I was crazy about farm games then. I, along with many of my friends, played FarmVille. But one little farm game was not enough for me. I thought I needed more farms, more crops, and more livestock. All were in virtual form,of course. I had five different farms in five different games. And I spent hours on my farms every day. While attending to my virtual farms one day I looked out of the window and noticed the empty land in our backyard.
