21、Particulate Matter
There are things floating around in the air. Most of them, you can not even see. They are a kind of air pollution called particles or particulate matter. In fact, particulate matter may be the air pollutant that most commonly affects people’s health.
Have a Look.
Particles can come in almost any shape or size, and can be solid particles or liquid droplets.【1】 These two groups differ in many ways. One of the differences is size, we call the bigger particles PM 10 and we call the smaller particles PM 2.5.
BIG.
The big particles are between 2.5 and 10 micrometers (from about 25 to 100 times thinner than a human hair). These particles are called PM 10 (we say ―PM ten, which stands for Particulate Matter up to 10 micrometers in size).【2】
SMALL.
The small particles are smaller than 2.5 micrometers (100 times thinner than a human hair).【3】We say ―PM two point five, as in Particulate Matter up to 2.5 micrometers in size. The smaller particles are lighter and they stay in the air longer and travel farther. PM 10 particles can stay in the air for minutes or hours while PM 2.5 particles can stay in the air for days or weeks. And travel? 【4】 PM 2.5 particles go even farther; many hundreds of miles.
Particulate Matter and Your Health.
When you breathe, you take in the air along with any particles in the air, like heavy metal sand cancer causing organic compounds. Both PM 10 and PM 2.5 particles can cause health problems, specifically respiratory (呼吸的) health.【5】 Exposure to particulate matter leads to increased use of medication and more visits to the doctor or emergency room.
A.These particles are called PM 2.5.
B.We divide particles into two major groups.
C.These particles cause less severe health effects.
D.PM 10 particles can travel as much as 30 miles.
E.Air pollution is a growing problem in the whole world.
F.PM 2.5 can have worse health effects than the bigger PM 10.
G.Air pollutants have great effects on our environment and our health.
22、 Sea urchins(海胆) are small creatures , but what’s really remarkable about them is that they eat anything that happens to float by. They have really sharp teeth they use to rid rocks of algae(海藻)which makes them pretty valuable especially in places like Hawaii where algae are threatening the coral reefs. In the summer of 2019, 500,000 of them were used to deal with the algae.
The problem started when non-native algae were introduced to the ecosystem of Kaneohe Bay in the 1970s. Because they had no enemies, they ended up taking over the bay, according to the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). The algae blocked sunlight from reaching the coral, which in turn affected the local fish because they changed the chemistry of the water.
That’s when the NMFS turned to sea urchins that loved to devour the algae. But they had to grow to the size of a cherry tomato before they could be used. Since 2011, sea urchins have been grown and used to handle the algae problem. Some of the funds are available due to an unfortunate incident. In 2005, a ship was grounded on a shallow reef near Kaneohe Bay. When the ship was removed, 20 acres of reefs have been damaged. When there is environmental damage, the NMFS and other agencies receive funds from the wrongdoers and the funds are used to restore the damage. Some funds were spent on other projects like the sea urchins. The state of Hawaii began to grow the sea urchins. When they are large enough, divers carefully place them on the reef.
Algae isn’t the only thing that threatens the coral reefs. Climate change and the effects of fishing and tourism in the area also endanger the coral reefs. But turning to sea urchins instead of man-made solutions seems like the best way to go.
【1】Why are sea urchins regarded as outstanding creatures?
A.They are tiny but have teeth.
B.They can keep the ocean clean.
C.They can remove harmful algae.
D.They grow on coral reefs with algae.
【2】What happened after non-native algae arrived at Kaneohe Bay?
A.They helped the coral reefs to survive.
B.They spread to every corner of the bay.
C.They didn't fit in with the new surroundings.
D.They fought against other species to get food.
【3】Which word can replace the underlined word “devour” in paragraph 3?
A.Eat B.Block
C.Attack D.Attract
【4】What does the author suggest doing to save coral reefs?
A.Banning fishing and tourism. B.Relying on humans’ solutions.

23、Pre-College Program Courses
The Harvard Pre-College Program will be hosting all courses online for Summer 2021. To encourage interactive learning, class sizes are small and typically range from 12 to 18 students. In this collegial setting, you will practice the art of healthy debates, learn to communicate clearly on complex topics, and deliver presentations on your own research, all under the guidance of Harvard instructors for a true Ivy League experience. At the end of the program, you will receive a written evaluation from your instructor, as well as a Harvard transcript with a grade of AR or NM (“requirements met” or “requirements not met”). Please note: You need to attend every online class in its entirety to receive a passing grade of “Met All Requirements”.

24、The library is one of the most popular places at a western university. Students turn to it for research, conversations about class, and many other services.
Compared with Chinese libraries, college libraries, college libraries in the US and UK tend to offer more resources. A postgraduate at Yale University can borrow as many as 225 books at a time.
In addition to borrowing books, there are online and electronic resources. These include a database search of popular and academic material, such as LexisNexis Academic, which offer items from newspapers and magazines.
Although books and articles are the items that students ask for most frequently, some libraries provide audio and video recordings, maps and sheet music(活页乐谱). At some schools, teachers and tutors put electronic copies of their teaching PPTs on the library Web to give easier access for students.
Another useful service in Western college libraries is the Interlibrary Loan. This allows a student at one school to borrow books from another school. The loan request is made through the student’s college library, which gets the book, gives it to the user, and arranges for its return.
Technology has brought more services to students and has made libraries attractive. Some universities have services for students to send messages through the computer or mobile texts to ask the library staff for information.
Earlier this year, Harvard University introduced a new Scan and Deliver service, allowing students to make requests for parts of books and articles. Requests made through the system are handled by library staff. The student receives and e-mail with an Internet link to the scanned pages. The service is free and all material comes within four days.
It used to be that libraries didn’t allow food or drinks. But that rule is changing and many of them now contain a cafe so students can spend as much time as they want in the library.
Actually, some US university libraries are now all-night affairs, or have at least one study room open all night.
