  • 21、New Year' s resolutions(决心)have been around long enough that we all scent to stick to the same ones--hit the gym, lay off the candy, read more books, call your mother-regardless of whether we follow through with our intentions.

While January 1st seems like the perfect time to have a new start again, exactly when people developed that mindset(思维模式)isn’t common knowledge. It turns out that the modern belief of' a New Year’s resolution isn’t as old as you thought. According to many historians, the ancient Babylonians were the first group of people to make New Year’s resolutions. However, instead of making a commitment to self improvement, they made a commitment to the gods to pay their debts and return any objects they had borrowed.

An ancient Roman tradition from 46 B. C, bears even more likeness to modern resolutions. Emperor Julius Caesar declared January the month of Janus. Romans believed Janus looked backwards into the previous year and ahead into the future. In his honor, they made sacrifices to the god and promises of good behavior for the coining year.

But the modern New Year's resolution didn’t fully form until centuries later. The practice was common enough by the early 1800s. An article in 1802 states, "Statesmen have sworn to have no other objet in view than the good of their country.. the physicians have determined to advise the use of medicine no more than is necessary, and to he very reasonable in their fees.”

The first time “New Year's resolution" appeared as a phrase was in the January 1st issue of a Boston newspaper in 1813. “I believe there are a lot of people," the article goes, “with a serious determination of beginning the New Year with new resolutions and new behavior, and with the full belief that they shall accept punishment for all their former

    faults and wipe them away.

So as you make (and possibly fail at) your New year's resolutions, know that you're in good company.

1Whose New Years resolutions were most different from the present common practice?

    A. Ancient Babylonians’   B. Ancient Romans’

    C. Statesmen's in the 1800s.   D. Boston people's in 1813

2According to Paragraph 4, the physicians focused their resolutions on_______

    A. annual incomes   B. personal ambitions

    C. professional honesty   D. academic improvement

3What is the author's purpose in writing the text?

    A. To encourage people to make New year's resolutions

    B. To give advice on how to make New Year’s resolutions.

    C. To compare different New year's resolutions in history.

    D. To introduce the development of New Year's resolutions

  • 22、   On a recent spring morning. Susan Alexander, a retired government intelligence analyst, left her Maryland home, climbed into her Volkswagen Passat and drove about three miles to pick up two strangers. She battled rush-hour traffic on the Capital Beltway and George Washington Memorial Parkway before dropping them off at Reagan National Airport. She didn't earn a cent for her trouble, and that was the point.

Alexander is a member of the Silver Spring Time Bank-one of more than 100 such exchanges around the world trying to build community by exchanging time credits for services instead of dollars and cents. “I have time,” she said. “I like giving the gift of time to other people. “

In Alexander's case, passengers Mary and Al Liepold were grateful for the ride, but it wasn't charity. Mary,a retired writer and editor for nonprofit organizations, used time credits she banked for editing work and baking. Senior citizens who don't drive, the Liepolds cashed in their credits to catch a flight to Montreal for a five-day vacation.

Without money changing hands or shifting between virtual accounts, the airport drop-off was more like a coffee party than a taxi ride. Driver and passengers chatted about projects they've completed for the time bank, and no one raised an eyebrow when Mary said she likes “to avoid the conventional economy. “

“The beauty of this is that you make friends,” Mary Liepold said. “You don't just get services.”

The Silver Spring Time Bank formed in 2015 and has about 300 members, said co-founder Mary Murphy. Last year, she said, l,000 hours were exchanged for basic home repairs, dog walking, cooking and tailoring, among other services, without the exchange of money. “ You get to save that money that you would have spent,” she said. “You get to meet somebody else in your community and get to know that person. That's a bonus that's part of an exchange. “

A deal performed partly to make friends would seem to go against classical economics and one of Benjamin Franklin's most memorable sayings:”Time is money. “ To those at the forefront of modem time-banking, that is the appeal.

1What's the main purpose of the Silver Spring Time Bank?

    A. To better serve the local economy.

    B. To help people get to know more friends.

    C. To provide the elderly with timely financial help.

    D. To build community by exchanging time credits for services.

2How did the Liepolds pay for their ride?

    A. In cash. B. By credit card.

    C. By cheque. D. With time credits.

3What does the underlined word “that” in the last paragraph refer to?

    A. Making friends. B. Classical economics.

    C. Modem time-banking. D. Franklin's famous saying.

4What is the suitable title for the text?

    A. Time is money B. The more friends, the better

    C. Giving the gift of time D. Swapping time credits for services

  • 23、   Violent winter weather sweeping across large parts of the central and southern US has brought record-breaking cold temperatures, leaving the electricity cut off and at least 21 deaths.

The worst power outages were in Texas, where more than 4 million homes and businesses remained without power on Tuesday in subfreezing temperatures. Elsewhere more than 250,000 people also lost power across parts of Appalachia, and 4 million people lost power in Mexico.

The blackouts forced Harris county to scramble(争夺)to get more than 8,000 doses of Moderna's coronavirus vaccine into people's arms, after the county public health facility lost power and its back-up generator also failed. The conditions also delayed vaccine shipments. State officials said Texas, due to receive more than 400,000 doses this week, did not expect deliveries until at least Wednesday.

Associating climate change, normally connected with burning heat, with an unusual winter storm that has destroyed a wide part of Texas, most people find it seem so abnormal. But scientists say there is evidence that the rapid heating of the Arctic can help push cold air from the north pole much further south, possibly to the US-Mexico border.

This phenomenon has shown itself to a dramatic degree over the past month, with a splitting of the polar vortex(涡旋)helping cause huge flurries of snow in Europe as well as record cold temperatures in parts of the US used to milder winters.

There is no agreement among scientists over the interaction between Arctic heat and cold weather further south, which is called as a topic of “an active area of research”. Global heating is causing warmer winters, and record cold temperatures are now being clearly outpaced by record hot temperatures, but the complex interaction of climatic conditions still requires further investigation, to the great surprise of some among others, including some famous scientists.

【1】What record has been broken recently in the US?

    A.The power outage.

    B.The cold weather.

    C.Coronavirus vaccine.

    D.Deaths in the blackouts.

【2】Why did vaccines become of vital importance in Harris county?

A.Vaccine shipments were disturbed by its state government.

B.More back-up generators should be set up to provide power.

C.Harris county had an argument with the Texas government.

D.The local health facility failed to work properly without power.

【3】What do the public think about the weather phenomenon in the central and southern US?

    A.Unreasonable.

    B.Undoubted.

    C.Discouraging.

    D.Predictable.

【4】What interaction of climates is focused on by scientists?

    A.Milder winters and violent summers.

    B.Arctic cold and Antarctic heat.

C.Global heating and violent cold weather.

D.Cold and heat in active areas

  • 24、   At one time, about 300 native languages were spoken on the Australian continent. Only about 90 of them are still spoken today.

European settlers arrived in Australia in the late 1700s. Experts say that colonization had a harmful effect on native languages. Now, only about 60 of them are considered “alive” and in daily use. As older members of tribes die, other languages are likely to pass away.

In the central Australian desert, only 20 people are fluent in Pertame, a language native to the area. But now, children are being taught its ancient words in hope that it won't die out.

Bradshaw and Swan are among the native elders working to keep Pertame alive. Swan has published language books on Pertame. She is one of the last remaining fluent speakers of the language and founder of the Pertame School, opened two years ago.

Bradshaw is a teacher at the school. Children at the school not only learn the language, they also cook traditional food and learn history. “Our old people have all passed away. There are only a few of us left to teach our kids how our old people used to live. ” said Bradshaw.

According to community leaders, for many years, they were forbidden to speak their native language. Bradshaw recalls one of her experiences as a child, “The teacher walked past saying, ‘Don’t speak that language at school.’ We promised ourselves we would talk it in secret to keep it going. People don’t understand how important it is for Aboriginal (土著人的) people.”

In some schools in northern Australia, students learn in both English and an Aboriginal language. Many communities speak what is called “Aboriginal English”. It keeps some structures of Standard English and includes words from Aboriginal languages.

1How many native languages are used in Australia nowadays?

    A.20. B.60.

    C.90. D.300.

2What do we know about native languages in Australia?

    A.They disappeared in 1700s.

B.They are being saved by elders.

C.They have bad effects on the young.

D.They are of little importance for the locals.

    3Why Pertame School was founded?

    A.To respect the old people.

    B.To teach children to cook.

C.To keep the language Pertame alive.

D.To combine Standard English with Pertame.

4Which can best describe “Aboriginal English”?

A.It is becoming more and more popular.

B.It is being spread throughout Australia.

C.It has replaced English in northern Australia.

D.It includes some words of the native language.
