二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   My college experience included this life-skill lesson: Drink alcohol on a full stomach. Or you will get inebriated too quickly. Of course, most college students shouldn’t be drinking at all, but we know from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism that close to 60 percent of college students aged 18 to 22 do consume alcohol, which makes harm-reducing approaches important.

Unfortunately, campus authorities and researchers are reporting a practice that turns the full-stomach drinking strategy on its head: rather than filling up before a night of partying, significant numbers of students refuse to eat all day before consuming alcohol.

This is a high-risk behavior called “drunkorexia,” which is one part eating disorder, one part alcoholism—a very dangerous combination for college-age students. The term drunkorexia, which can also include excessive exercise or purging before consuming alcohol, was coined about 10 years ago, and it started showing up in medical research around 2012. Drunkorexia addresses the need to be the life of the party while staying extremely thin, pointing to a flawed mind-set about body image and alcoholism among college students, mostly women.

Imagine this scenario: A female college freshman doesn’t eat anything all day, exercises on an empty stomach, then downs five shots of tequila in less than two hours. Because there’s no food in her system to help slow the absorption of alcohol, those shots affect her rapidly, leading to inebriation and possibly passing out, vomiting or suffering alcohol poisoning. That’s drunkorexia.

Tavis Glassman, professor of health education and public health at the University of Toledo in Ohio, researches drunkorexia and worries about scenarios such as the one described above: “With nothing in her system, alcohol hits quickly, and that brings up the same issues as with any high-risk drinking: sexual assault, unintentional injury, fights, hangovers that affect class attendance and grades, and possibly ending up in emergency because the alcohol hits so hard,” he says.

“Alcohol can negatively affect the liver or gastrointestinal system, it can interfere with sleep, lower the immune system and is linked to several types of cancers,” Hultin says.

1What does the underlined word “inebriated” in paragraph 1 mean?

    A.excited B.overwhelmed C.addicted D.drunk

2We can infer from the passage that ________.

A.a large number of college students spend most of their nights partying

B.some college students refuse to eat before drinking alcohol to keep slim

C.There is a direct link between body image and consuming alcohol

D.female college student is more likely to be hurt if she drinks alcohol

3Which of the following may Tavis Glassman agree with?

A.With more food in one’s system, he may suffer from the effects of alcohol slowly.

B.Drinking five shots of tequila in less than two hours is the performance of drunkorexia.

C.Those who don’t attend classes and have lower grades tend to be addicted to alcohol.

D.Alcohol has negative effects on the immune system and may lead to several cancers.

  • 22、   Using a computer used to mean clicking at a mouse. Then it meant tapping on a touchscreen. Increasingly, it means simply speaking. A smartphone’s voice assistant processes 25 billion requests a month.

One group, though, has been left behind. The World Health Organisation counts 430 million people as deaf or hard of hearing. Many use sign languages to communicate. Normally, they cannot use those languages to talk to computers. 【1】

People have tried to teach computers to understand sign languages. There have been plenty of claims of breakthroughs in recent years. So-called solutions range from special gloves that capture the wearer’s finger movements to software that detects distinct hand shapes. 【2】 In practical contexts, no case of feasibility is evident. Deaf people are more than ever disassociated from digital community.

It is easy to see why. Gloves are similar to body-worn cameras. Both require users to adapt to the needs of hearing people. Hand-shape recognition, while useful, cannot by itself handle the full complexity of sign languages. Some projects have been complimented as offering cheap alternatives to human interpreters in places like hospitals, police stations or classrooms. 【3】

But things are improving. Research groups, which increasingly include deaf scientists, are asking how technology can best serve deaf people’s interests. Students of sign languages are compiling databases, known as corpora, full of examples of how the sign languages are used. Programmers are trying to turn them into useful products.

As with spoken languages, sign languages possess their own grammar, idioms and dialects. Again like spoken languages, the hard-and-fast rules of grammar books do not really capture the subtleties of everyday usage. Single signs can be shorthand for complex ideas. Like speakers, signers often take shortcuts, such as representing two-handed signs with a single hand. 【4】 Therefore, ways to get them easily across are vital to true understanding and communication.

A.They are criticized for somewhat sacrificing formality for conveniences.

B.These solutions, despite certain disadvantages, serve, in a way, as answers to the deaf people’s urgent needs.

C.They face the risk of being excluded from the digitalization that is taking over everyday life.

D.However, the cost of even small errors can be very high.

E.Correctly interpreting all these is much harder than recognizing spoken syllables or written letters.

F.They have won applause while isolating the very people for whom they are designed.

  • 23、   The European wood bison population has grown so much as to no longer be considered "Vulnerable" according to the global authority on conservation, the International Union for Conservation of Nature(IUCN),in their latest Red List update.

A century ago, only 50 European bison remained on Earth, and they were mostly restricted to nature reserves.

“The conservation successes provide living proof that the world can set,and meet, ambitious biodiversity targets,” said Dr. Jane Smart,Global Director of IUCN' s Biodiversity Conservation Group in a statement.

Eight of the 47 bison herds have special genes for long-term survival, so scientists need to move animals in and out of herds in order to make healthy genes continue. Establishing greater numbers of separate herds will also help prevent possible losses due to things like diseases or natural disasters.

This led to the creation of a project called “Wilder Blean" where Blean Woods in Kent, England, will receive Dutch and Polish bison to create the first wild herd on the island for 6,000 years.

English conservationists and wildlife managers are interested in the effects bison have on the landscape. As large grass-eating animals, the constant foraging, digging and breaking they do on the forest floor have been assumed to have positive effects on the ecosystem.

Bison kill weak or dead trees by eating their bark or rubbing against them to remove their thick winter fur. This turns the tree into food and habitat for insects, which in turn provide food for birds.

In this way they act like forestry experts, and the Kent Wildlife Trust hopes that this significant species will maintain declining populations of plants, birds, insects, and mammals by way of their unique habits.

1What has made the European wood bison grow in large numbers?

A.Being restricted to nature reserves. B.Being updated on the latest Red List.

C.Being kept under effective conservation. D.Being born with long-term survival genes.

2What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 5 refer to?

A.Providing living proof. B.Preventing natural disasters.

C.Establishing nature reserves. D.Setting up more separate herds.

3What is the attitude of Kent Wildlife Trust towards the project “Wilder Blean”

    A.Supportive. B.Conservative. C.Skeptical. D.Objective.

4What is the purpose of this text?

A.To introduce the various actions of European wood bison.

B.To highlight the importance of setting and meeting targets.

C.To report the conservation successes for European wood bison.

D.To praise Dr. Jane Smart for his contributions to conservation.

Corals are comeback creatures. As the world froze and melted and sea levels rose and fell over 30,000 years, Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, which is roughly the size of Italy, died and revived five times. But now, thanks to human activity, corals face the most complex condition they have yet had to deal with.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate change, a rise in global temperatures of 1.5oC could cause coral reefs to decline 70-90%. The planet is about 1oC hotter than in the 19th century and its seas are becoming warmer, stormier and more acidic. This is already affecting relations between corals and the single-celled algae (海藻), which give them their color. When waters become unusually warm, algae float away, leaving reefs a ghostly white. This “bleaching” is happening five times as often as it did in the 1970s. Meanwhile the changing chemistry of the oceans makes it harder for corals to form their structures.

If corals go, divers and marine biologists are not the only people who will miss them. Reefs take up only a percent of the sea floor, but support a quarter of the planet’s fish diversity. The fish that reefs shelter are especially valuable to their poorest human neighbors, many of whom depend on them as a source of protein. Roughly an eighth of the world’s population lives within 100km of a reef. Corals also protect 150,000km of shoreline in more than 100 countries and territories from the oceans buffeting, as well as generating billions of dollars in tourism revenue.

Coral systems must adapt if they are to survive. They need protection from local sources of harm. Their eco-systems suffer from waste from farms, building sites and blast fishing. Governments need to impose tighter rules on these industrials, such as tougher local building codes, and to put more effort into enforcing rules against overfishing.

Setting up marine protected areas could also help reefs. Locals who fear for their livelihoods could be given work as rangers with the job of looking after the reserves. Visitors to marine parks can be required to pay a special tax, like what has been done in the Caribbean.

Many reefs that have been damaged could benefit from restoration. Coral’s biodiversity offers hope, because the same coral will grow differently under different conditions. Corals of the western Pacific, for example, can withstand higher temperatures than the same species in the eastern Pacific, which proves a way forward to encourage corals to grow in new spots.

1According to the passage, what may happen to corals when waters become warm?

    A.Turning white B.Getting pink

    C.Being active D.Becoming colorful

2According to the passage, corals can _______ the changing in the nature.

A.carry out stricter rules on industries around the coast

B.call on volunteers to look after the marine reserves

C.reduce the number of visitors to the marine parks

D.ban people from fishing in the coral reef areas

4What’s the main purpose of the passage?

A.To present the importance of coral reef to the world.

B.To introduce the severe effect on coral reef brought by climate change.

C.To propose governments to take action immediately to save coral reef.

D.To attract more attention to coral reef protection.
