  • 21、   I come from a broken family. After we grew up my sister and I could go years without speaking. And that is where this story begins.

My sister Jeanne and I were born only 14 months apart but by the time we were teenagers we had lost touch. By age 19 I had moved away from our home in Wisconsin to live on my father’ s horse farm in Virginia. Jeanne got married at 18 moved to Chicago and I didn’ t know what. We lived separate lives in separate states and our connection somehow ended.

Fast forward about five years. I was 24 and on a trip with my fiancé (未婚夫) to New York Citya place I had never been. During a day of sightseeing we were crossing a very busy street loaded with people. Everyone was in a hurry. I had laughed at something my fiancé said and I suddenly heard my name yelled from somewhere behind me “ Cheryl ” I froze in my steps in the middle of the road. Tears welled up in my eyes. I knew without a doubt that it was my sister Jeanne. I yelled back before even turning to look. “ Jeanne

It was her. I began pushing people out of my way to get to her. The crowd started to part—even by New York standards we must have seemed crazy. And there we were standing in the middle of a Manhattan street facing each other and smiling. I couldn’ t believe it.

I later asked how she’ d known it was me—she never saw me She said it was my laugh. I wouldn’ tsay my laugh is all that unusual but I guess to a family member it’ s infectious(有感染力的) . It hits your heart and goes deep in your mind.

Since that time my sister and I have never been separated. We both moved back to Wisconsin. Wetalk daily. Many years have passed and we are now in our 50s. I truly believe God played a huge part in bringing us together. But our meeting by chance wasn’ t just a sign. I see it as more of a lesson a reminder not to lose touch with loved ones. • 22、   Ida Nelson and her sister were relaxing and enjoying themselves in the sauna (桑拿室) when she heard a series of long low sounds from a small airplane circling the nearby airport.

It was 11:30 at night in the Alaskan village of Igiugig, population 70, and, as she told the reporter, “Any time a plane flies over that late, you know something is wrong.”

Nelson and her sister leaped out of the sauna, ran to the window, and saw the problem: The airport’s runway lights were out.

Nelson threw on some clothes, jumped into her ATV, and floored it to the airport, where she found a local pilot trying to turn on the lights manually.

“Normally, if you push the button 10 or 15 times, the lights will just light up,” Nelson told KTOO out of Juneau. Not this time. Meanwhile, she and the pilot learned of the plane’s urgent mission: It was a medevac (医疗救护直升机), there to transport a seriously ill local girl to the nearest hospital, 280 miles away in Anchorage.

Nelson had a plan. Driving her ATV to the end of the runway, she shone her headlights for the plane to follow. Great idea, but it wasn’t enough. More light was needed, so a neighbor called nearly every home in the village—32 of them.

Within 20 minutes, 20 vehicles arrived at the airport, many of the drivers still in pajamas (睡衣). Following directions from the medevac pilot, the cars lined up on one side of the runway.

The medevac made its final approach and, guided by the headlights, landed safely. The young patient was loaded onto the aircraft, and the plane immediately took off again. Her illness was never publicly revealed, but she has since been released from the hospital.

In a world filled with uncertainty, the little community’s positive activism was a big deal. Not so much for Nelson. As she told the reporter, in Igiugig, coming together “is kind of a normal deal.”

【1】What problem did the medevac have?

A.Helping the pilot to repair the lights.

B.Calling her neighbors to help together.

  • 23、Su Hua is studying at Cambridge, UK. She has bought a bicycle and is worried about security (安全). Her friend, Kate, found this article and sent it to her.

    Introduction

A lot of crime is against bicycles. About 150,000 bicycles are stolen every year and most are never found. You can prevent this happening by following a few careful steps.

    Basic Security

Do not leave your bicycle in out-of-the-way places. Always lock your bicycle when you leave. Secure it to lampposts or trees. Take off smaller parts and take them with you, for example lights and saddles (车座).

    Locks

Get a good lock. There are many different types in the shops. Buy one that has been tested against attack. Ask for a recommendation from a bike shop.

    Marking

Security marking your bike can act a deterrent to a thief. It can also help the police find your bicycle. It should be clearly written and include your postcode and your house or flat number. This will provide a simple way to identify your bicycle.

    Registration

There are a number of companies who will security mark your bicycle for you. They will then put your registration number and personal details on their computer database. Then if your bicycle is found it will be easy to contact you.

    Finally

Keep a record of the bicycle yourself: its make, model and registration number. You can even take a photograph of it. This will prove the bicycle belongs to you.

  • 24、Fragile. Oversensitive. Glued to their phones. Is this what comes to mind when we think of the teens of this generation? While this may be true, there might be more to this generation of teens than what is generally perceived.

Never before have the lives of any generation of teens been as flooded with mobile technology and social media as the teens of this generation. The popularity of social media has led to a world in which teens have to participate in Instagram, TikTok and Twitter, or else cause the social anger of their friends, some of whom communicate primarily via those online platforms. As compared to their parents or grandparents who were likely less connected and more isolated, these teens are constantly exposed to the highlight reels (高光时刻) of many in their social circles and beyond. It is no wonder that the self-esteem and mental health of this generation’s teens have taken a hit.

Moreover, the teens today are more individualistic. This is in contrast to the kampong spirit of their parents’ and grandparents’ days. Gone is the friendship among neighbours who are friendly with one another and quick to offer a helping hand when they see another in need. In its place, we have teens who may not even have a clue as to who lives in the unit next to theirs, much less offer a friendly nod or wave when they happen to cross paths with a neighbour.

Yet, the effects of technology on this generation of teens are not all bad. Arguably, the very connectedness that social media brings about has led to being more progressive. Logging onto platforms where people of all walks of life gather means that one is exposed to those people and their distinctive ways of life. In comparison, the parents or grandparents of this generation of tens probably did not have the same opportunity to get to know people outside of their social circles at their age, and are thus more likely to have fixed, stereotypical (刻板的) opinions of people different from them. This generation of teens, on the other hand, has the chance to use this technology to understand the variety and diversity out there.

【1】What does the underlined phrase “have taken a hit” mean in Paragraph 2?

    A.Have been terribly hurt.

    B.Have improved a lot.

    C.Have recovered soon.

    D.Have been ignored.

【2】Which belongs to the kampong spirit according to Paragraph 3?

    A.Telephone your parents regularly.

B.Never say Hi to your classmates.

    C.Share your food with neighbours.

    D.Borrow money from your teacher.

【3】What good effect does social media have on the teens?

A.They are more ambitious and active.

B.They are more friendly and generous.

C.They are more independent of their parents.

D.They are more open-minded and better informed.

    【4】How is the text developed?

    A.By giving examples.

    B.By showing statistics.

    C.By making comparisons.

    D.By providing instructions.
