24、The other day I came across a few local musicians and happened to hear them talking:
"I hate all the terrible pianos in this town. I hate that rubbish they play on the radio. They can't even understand a bit of music."
"I'm never playing in that club again. Too many drunks and nobody listens to us."
But one younger musician said, "There are a few clubs that book my band (乐队) a few nights a month, and I'm trying to find other places to play. I'm also looking forward to booking a few summer festivals this year."
It's said that you are the average (平均) of the five people whom you spend the most time with, or to put it another way, you are who your friends are.
Attitudes(态度) are important. Whether they're positive(积极的)or negative (消极的), they're rubbing off on you. If you're always around people who complain about short of work and about other musicians or say bad words about others, and you play the role of a victim, it's possible that you will start to as well. So it's time to take a look at the people you call "friends", as what kind of friends you have decides what kind of life you are going to live.
This is an easy exercise: Make a list of the people who you often go out with, and simply stop spending time with the negative people on your list. Set a new standard for yourself and don't become friends with people who fall below that standard.
Keep successful people around you and your own chances for success will be much better. Ask them how they do it and learn from them. Ask if they will help you get the work you're looking for, or maybe give you some advice to help you on your career path.

25、 When disaster (灾难) happens, you might find yourself without water, gas and electricity. You might even need to leave your home right away. So you are supposed to plan for the bad situations before the disaster comes. Here are some suggestions.
First, have a family meeting. Plan a way to get your family members together if they can’t find each other after the disaster. Choose two places for everyone to go to if it isn’t safe to return home. The first should be near your house. You can go there in an emergency (紧急情况) like a fire. The second meeting place should be outside your neighborhood.
Next, choose a person outside your area who can help your family get in touch with each other. After a disaster, it is often easier to communicate over a long-distance call than a local one. The person can pass messages between your family members.
Then, get a family disaster kit ready. It should include things your family needs. It can help you survive (生存) at least for three days like bread, water, medicine and things like that. Put them in a bag so you can carry it if you leave in a hurry. When doing it, remember that different people have different needs. Include special things necessary for elderly of young members of your family.
Finally, practice your emergency plan, and update (更新) it as necessary.
You may not be able to stop disasters, but with a little planting you can be helped.

27、 Once upon a time, on Christmas Eve, Scrooge sat in his office. The door of his office was open. He wanted to keep his eyes on his clerk, Bob Cratchit. Bob sat in a cold, gloomy, little cell. Scrooge had a very small fire, but Bob’s was even smaller. Bob couldn’t add any more coal because Scrooge kept the coal scuttle in his room.
“A Merry Christmas, uncle!” cried a happy voice. It was Scrooge’s nephew Fred.
“Bah!” said Scrooge. “Humbug! Merry Christmas! What reason have you got to be merry? You are poor.” “OK, then,” replied Fred cheerfully. “What reason have you got to be sad? You are rich. Don’t be cross, Uncle!”.
“I live in a world of fools. What’s Christmas time to you? It’s a time for paying bills without money. It’s a time for finding yourself a year older, but no richer.” said Scrooge.
“Uncle,” said Fred, “I have always thought of Christmas time as a kind, charitable, happy time. And so, Uncle, although Christmas has never put any gold or silver in my pocket, I think it has done me good. And it will do me good. And I say, God bless it!”
The clerk in the cell applauded. Then realizing his mistake, he poked the fire and put out the last little spark forever.
Then Scrooge’s nephew invited him to have dinner the next day, but he refused. As his nephew left the room, two kind old gentlemen came in.
“At Christmas time, Mr Scrooge,” said the gentleman, “we should give to the poor who have no shelter or food. They really suffer at this time of year.”
“Are there no prisons? And the workhouses? Are they still in operation?” asked Scrooge.
“They are, but I wish they were not.” replied the gentleman. “We don’t think that workhouses do enough for people. Many people prefer to die than to go there. So we are trying to raise money to buy the poor some clothes and food. What shall I put you down for?”
“Nothing. Let them die. There are too many people in the world anyway. Good afternoon, gentlemen!” Scrooge said. The gentlemen left. And Scrooge felt pleased with himself.
