24、One day a man found a cocoon(蚕) of a butterfly in the forest. He sat there for several hours and watched the butterfly. Suddenly, a small opening appeared and the butterfly made its great effort(努力) to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no further.(那个蛹好象忘记了它该怎样做, 也好象停止了挣扎).
So the man decided to help the butterfly. He cut off the remaining bit of the cocoon so that the butterfly would come out easily. But to his surprise, the butterfly got a heavy body and very small wings when it came out of the cocoon.
The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that the body would grow smaller at any moment and the wings would become larger and be able to fly. But neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling(爬) around with a heavy body and small wings. It was never able to fly.
The man was in his kindness, but he didn’t understand the nature rules. Before the butterfly came out of the cocoon, fluid(液体) from its body must be forced into its wings, and then would be ready for flying. It must have a hard struggle(拼搏) to get through the small opening to get its freedom from the cocoon.
Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If God allowed us to go through our life without any difficulties, it would make us fail. We would not be as strong as we could have been, we could never fly.

25、 Tom walked away from the school. He would never return. He was a lonely boy. Nobody loved him. He met his best friend, Joe Harper. Joe’s mother had beaten him. But Joe hadn’t done anything wrong. He also wanted to leave home. The two boys began to make plans. They both agreed to become pirates (海盗).
Five kilometers south of St Petersburg was an island called Jackson’s island. It was close to the other shore of the river. They decided to go there. They looked for Huckleberry Finn, and he joined them at once. They decided to meet on the river bank three kilometers from the village at midnight. Each would bring tools for fishing, and whatever they could steal — like those bad guys.
Tom arrived with a boiled ham and a corn, Joe had some bacon, and Huck had a frying pan, all stolen from home or their neighbors. They took some fire from an empty boat, and then they set off on the raft (木筏). At about 2 a.m. they landed on Jackson’s Island, and carried their only possessions onto the shore. They decided to sleep in the open air. That was what pirates did.
They built a fire, cooked some bacon for supper, and ate half of the corn they had brought. It seemed wonderful to be eating in the wild forest of an undiscovered island. They said they would never go back.
“It’s just the life for me,” said Tom, “You don’t have to get up in the mornings and go to school, and wash all those foolish things. A pirate doesn’t have to do anything.”
Huck asked, “What do pirates do?”
“Oh, they take ships and burn them. They get money and bury it in places where nobody can find it. And... kill everybody on the ships,” said Tom.
Slowly their talk stopped. Huck slept easily. Tom and Joe had more difficulty getting to sleep. Their conscience (良知) started to work. They began to fear that it was wrong to run away, and they thought of the stolen meat, and worried that it was bad to steal.

26、Saving water is an important part of going green. As water becomes less and polluted more, conservation(保护)becomes more and more important. The less water you use, the less wastewater will end up in our rivers and lakes. Wasting water means that more water needs to be treated and cleaned, a process that requires quite a lot of energy.
As it is said above, cutting down on water usage is one of the most important things you can do for your local environment and the planet as a whole. That is why more green households are going blue: cutting down their water footprint by conserving and harvesting(收获)water.
It may seem like a big concept, but going blue starts with small changes that everyone can make. Something as simple as turning off the tap while you brush your teeth can save a lot of water. Wash your fruit and vegetables in a bowl rather than under a tap to save even more. Make sure that the taps are fully turned off every time you step away from the sink or the shower - all those little drips can add up to a lot of water waste.
Another way of reducing your water footprint is reducing your dependence on the main water supply. Rainwater harvesting can meet a lot of your home's water needs. Many of us already practice rainwater harvesting in a small way. Collecting water from your gutters(檐沟)is a great way to keep your garden green without running the sprinkler(洒水器).
【1】 The underlined word "green" means in this passage.
A.未成熟的 B.环保 C.嫉妒 D.健康的
【2】 According to the passage, which is NOT the reason that people should save water?
A. Treating wastewater needs much energy.
B. The water on the Earth is becoming less and less.
C. The water on the Earth is becoming polluted more.
D. Rainwater harvesting can meet a lot of your home's water needs.
【3】 According to the passage, all of these can be used to save water except .
A. washing fruit and vegetables under a tap
B. using a bowl to wash your fruit and vegetables
C. making sure taps are fully turned off all the time
D. turning off the tap every time while brushing your teeth
【4】 From the passage. we can know that .
A. we can get enough water by harvesting
B. most people pay no attention to saving water
C. we can practice rainwater harvesting in a small way
D. harvesting water is more necessary than conserving it
27、 There was once a bat(蝙蝠)that was very lazy and he didn’t want to hunt insects. One day, he looked out of the window and saw a bird in its cage. The bird was given all its food and water and didn’t do anything at all. He admired (羡慕) a lot and he decided to become a child’s pet and then he made a plan.
The bat flew to parks so that he could be seen by some children and taken home. However, that bat was ugly and the children paid little attention to him. So the bat decided to improve his look. Finally, he met a little boy who was willing to keep him as a pet and took him home.
The bat was happy in his cage, in a warm and comfortable house. But when he wanted to eat something, there were no insects for him. There was only bird food in his cage. When the boy noticed the bat was getting thinner, he used a spoon to feed the bat bird food in order to make the bat enjoy that kind of food.
Some days later, the bat managed to escape from the cage and returned home. He began to hunt insects for food with other bats. Later, he became strong and enjoyed his life as a bat.
【1】Why did the bat want to be a pet?

28、Orbiting classroom
Do you still remember the lecture from China’s Tiangong space station last year? On March 23, astronaut Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping ang Ye Guangfu gave another one! It was livestream(直播)worldwide. What fun experiments did they do this time?
Hot “ice”
Last time, the astronauts made a water ball in space. This time, they turned a water ball into an “ice” ball! Well, it’s not a【1】 ice. It’s supersaturated sodium acetate solution(过饱和乙酸钠溶液).
The supersaturated solution is very unstable(不稳定的). The astronauts dropped a small crystal(晶体)of sodium acetate into the ball-shaped solution. Suddenly, more sodium acetate crystals grew, making a white ball of “ice”. This “ice” is anything but cold, however. The p【2】 actually gives off heat.
A bridge of water
How do you build a “bridge” with water? It’s h【3】 to do it on Earth. But in the space station, with little gravity, it’s quite easy!
In the lecture, Wang Yaping first made two water balls on two plates, then let them touch each other. Next, Wang p【4】 the two plates apart, and the water between them didn’t break. It became a “bridge”! This is because the surface tension(表面张力)of water is not disturbed by gravity in space. The surface tension keeps the “skin” of the water strong so that the bridge doesn’t break.
Separate water and oil
If we m【5】 oil and water in a bottle on Earth, they will quickly separate because they have different densities(密度). Gravity brings the water down while the oil stays on top. H【6】, if you do this in the space station, with no gravity, the oil and water will blend together.
How can we separate them, then? In the lecture, Ye Guangfu rotated(旋转)the bottle to c【7】 centrifugal force(离心力). With this man-made gravity, the heavier water is pushed to the furthest point, which brings the lightest oil closer to the center.
29、If you are given only 1 yuan, can you live in a city for one day? It may be a little difficult. But from Xi'an did it.

Some made use of their talents singing and dancing in parks or shopping malls. Many people who walked by took notice and helped . Zhao Jiacheng, 14, drew pictures and made paper crafts (手工). "This showed it's to learn a special skill," he said.
Living was hard, finishing the tasks was not any easier. They went to different places to finish tasks in a time. The most amazing one was when they had to exchange things worth a hundred yuan with only a piece of paper in half an hour. "We learned to persuade (说服) others. From a balloon to a cake to a bottle of yogurt…, after almost 20 tries, we got an expensive necklace, "he said, "we would all of the money we had raised to poor schools in Tibet."
