24、Chemistry is usually thought to be more difficult than other subjects, at least for the beginners. There are some reasons for this idea. For one thing, chemistry has a very specialized vocabulary (学科专用语汇). At first, studying chemistry is like learning a new language. Also, some concepts (概念) of chemistry are hard to understand. However, with hard work and careful study, you can finish this subject successfully—and even enjoy it. Here are some suggestions to help you develop good study habits and better understand the topics in the book:
●Firstly, attend classes on time. Listen to your teacher and take careful notes in class. If possible, always review the topics you learn in class, and review your notes on the same day.
●Secondly, think carefully whether you really understand the meaning of a formula (分子式) or the use of an equation (方程式). A good way to test your understanding is to explain a concept to a classmate or someone else.
●Thirdly, pay attention to things which have something to do with chemistry in life. Watch or do experiments (实验) in class carefully.
●Fourthly, question often and do not be afraid to ask your teacher or classmates for help.
You will find that chemistry is much more than numbers, formulas and equations. It’s often used in daily life just like math and physics. Once you fall in love with it, you’ll get lots of fun.

25、I was on a train in Switzerland(瑞士). Thirty minutes later, the train came to a stop and the conductor’s(乘务员)voice over the loudspeaker delivered a message in German, Italian and French. I’d made the mistake of not learning any of those languages before my vacation. Everyone started getting off the train and an old woman saw that I was confused and stressed. (I had to catch an overnight train to Rome, and I was flying home from there). She could speak some English and told me that an accident had happened on the tracks(轨道). She asked me where I was trying to get to, then went and talked to some workers, and came back to tell me that we’d have to hop(换乘)trains three or four times to get there.
I was really glad she was heading the same way because it would have been impossible for me to figure it out on my own(自己弄清楚). So we went from one train station to the next, getting to know each other along the way. She was really the sweetest woman. It was a 2.5-hour journey in total, and when we made it to the final destination(目的地), we got off and said our goodbyes. I had made it just in time to catch my train to Rome. She told me she had a train to catch as well. I asked her how much farther she had to go and it turned out(结果是)that her home was two hours back the other way. She had jumped from train to train and travelled the whole just to make sure that I made it. I was in shock. A woman spent her whole day sitting on trains and taking her hours away from her home just to help out a confused(迷惑的)tourist visiting her country.
No matter how many countries I visit, I’ll always say the most beautiful country in the world is Switzerland.

April will bring a new product – the Apple Watch – into the market. Last week, the watch was firstly introduced by Tim Cook, Apple's CEO. The price of the watch will differ from $349 to $1,099, depending on its size, strap and whether it is a sports or regular version.
Apple engineers and designers have put in a lot of thought and hard work into creating this "small screen" on your wrist(手腕). The "sensor" on the screen not only detects your finger, but knows the difference between when you are tapping, and when you are pressing harder.
The watch also has “haptic feedback(触觉反馈)”. You can send personal messages to your friend, such as drawing a star or a special sign with your fingers, or tapping the watch, say 3 times, and your friend will receive those taps on their wrist.
Besides telling the time, the watch will use 'bluetooth' to connect with your iPhone and show calls or text messages that come in.
According to Tim Cook, the watch may open up a whole new area of applications that we had never thought of. Some car factories like BMW have developed an app that allows its car owners to open their cars with the watch. A 'Hotels' app may allow you to open the door to your hotel room without worrying about losing the smart-card. And finally, even airlines are jumping in--passengers may be able to simply wave their wrist to check into their flight.
The biggest use of the watch, however, is as your personal fitness coach. The watch can measure your pulse (heartbeat) using a sensor at the bottom of the watch. It also has the same "accelerometer" as your iPhone, so it knows when you are moving, and also how much you are walking or running. It will remind you if you have been sitting for too long without much activity.

27、It was my first full-time job as a teacher in a high school in Riverside, California. The Department Chair told me that I would teach a writing class. I felt very confident.
It was my first class. When I entered the classroom, I was surprised. These kids looked too tall and mature(成熟的)to be high school students! I still didn’t have a list of names, so I started by talking with them and asking questions. Everything was fine until I noticed a tall boy eating a piece of cake. Rule 1, clearly written on the board, was “NO FOOD OR DRINK IN CLASS”. I got a little mad and asked him to read the rule out aloud. He did so and he got mad too!
I asked him, “Did you understand what you read?” This made him even madder.
“Yes, I did.”
“Well, then, what were you doing just now?”
“I was eating a piece of cake,” he looked at me angrily.
“Well, get up, go outside and throw the cake away.”
And then both of us made a mistake. He said, “Here, I don’t even want it.” Then he put the piece of cake in my hand. The icing(糖衣)of the cake went among my fingers, making a real mess. I was so mad that I hit the cake on his hair!
The class started laughing and clapping. Somebody got up, went to the board and wrote “Teacher - 1; Mark - 0”. I didn’t know whether I was supposed to laugh or not, but I couldn’t help it. And then, Mark got up and left.
The story was all over the school later. Some students came to me and said, “I hear that terrible things will happen if somebody tries to eat cake in your class!” Oh, how embarrassing!
