  • 24、Useful inventions

Inventions change how we live, work, play and think about what’s possible. Every year, TIME magazine lists the 100 best inventions based on how creative and useful they are in our life. What did the magazine choose this year? Let’s take a look.

    Easier to read

Reading can be a big challenge for those who may have poor vision or reading difficulties. But Or Cam Read can help them! It’s the first of its kind reading pen with a smart camera and an AI system. After scanning (扫描) a page of text with the click of a button (点击按钮), it can read the text a loud to the user. You don’t need to connect it to the Internet. You can use it offline at home, work, school, or even in stores when you need to read a price tag (标签).

    Sweet idea

Honey is produced by bees. But today’s beekeeping business is not good for these hard-working insects. Bee farmers may kill them after harvesting (收获) honey because it’s cheaper than feeding the bees through the winter. To save bees, US company MeliBio has found a way to make the world’s first bee-free honey. They used synthetic biology (合成生物学) to create honey directly from plants. This kind of honey tastes just like there alone, and it is healthy, too.

    Keep you calm

When you feel angry or unhappy, what do you do about it? Scientists say you can try to calm others. This can help you calm down. That’s why Purrble was invented. This furry (毛茸茸的), bear like toy has 9 sensors (感应器). It has a quick “heartbeat” and can respond to your touch.

As you hold and pat it its heartbeat slows. And it purrs (发出咕噜声) like a cat: It sounds like it really enjoys your touch! Through patting Purrble, you will become more aware of your own feelings and learn how to feel calm yourself.

【1】How does Or Cam Read work for people?

A.By connecting to the Internet anywhere.

B.By making the words in the text larger.

C.By scanning the text and reading aloud.

D.By showing photos from a smart camera.

    【2】What does “bee-free” mean?

    A.Bees are not needed.

B.Bees can live freely in winter.

C.Bees can be set free after working

    D.Bees feeding costs nothing.

【3】What do we know about the new kind of honey?

A.It is not good for human health.

B.It is made from real honey.

C.It is too expensive for most people.

D.It has the same taste as the real honey.

【4】Why can Purrble help you calm down?

A.Its purrs slow down your heartbeats.

B.Holding it makes you feel comfortable.

C.Its sensors reduce your anger and sadness.

D.Patting it helps you know your feelings.

【5】Where can we most probably read the passage?

    A.In a guidebook.

    B.In a magazine.

    C.In a storybook.

    D.On a noticeboard.

  • 25、   Is your TV connected to the Internet? What about your chair, or your fridge? Probably they are not. But in the future, most things in your home may be connected, thanks to the so-called “Internet of things”.

The Internet of things may be coming sooner than you think. Earlier this year, Samsung CEO spent a lot of time talking about the Internet things. He said that five years from now, every Samsung product will be part of the Internet of things, no matter whether it’s a remote control or a washing machine.

So, how do household (家用的) objects that are part of the Internet of things work? Well, think of a common chair. When connected to the Internet, the chair warms up when it knows the user has just walked into the room and is feeling cold.

An Internet-connected camera could help people feel safer in their homes. It can know people’s faces and has an infrared sensor (红外传感器), so even if it’s dark it can see when someone passes by and send you a message on your smartphone to let you know who’s there. If the person is someone you don’t know, it can tell you that, too.

But according to MIT Technology Review, whether companies are connecting dog food bowls or security systems to the Internet, there may be some problems. For example, many early connected-home objects don’t have much built-in security, which means they could be hacked (被黑客攻击). Moreover, it could be difficult to get these new machines to work together especially when they are made by different companies. To fight this, many companies have joined the Open Interconnect Consortium, which had 45 members by late 2014.

So, picture this: you enter your home. The temperature changes to make you feel comfortable. Your favourite music starts playing for you. Do you think that this would be a good thing? It may happen sooner than you think.

A.Advantages of living with the Internet

  • 26、Every artist knows in his heart that he is saying something to the public. Not only does he want to say it well, but he wants it to be something that has not been said before. He hopes the public will listen and understand what he wants to teach them, and what he wants them to learn from him.

What visual(视觉的)artists like painters want to teach is easy to make out but difficult to explain,

because painters translate their experience into shapes and colours, not words. They seem to feel that a

certain selection of shapes and colours, out of countless billions of, is exceptionally interesting for them and worth showing to us. Without their work we should never have noticed these particular Shapes and colours. or have felt the delight which they brought to the artist.

Most artists take their shapes and colours from the world of nature and from human bodies in motion and at rest; their choices indicate(指示)that these aspects of the world are worth looking at, that they contain beautiful sights. Contemporary(当代的)artists might say that they merely choose subjects that provide an interesting pattern, that there is nothing more in it. Yet even they do not choose entirely without reference to the character of their subjects.

If one painter chooses to paint a decaying(腐烂)leg and another a lake in moonlight, each of them is directing our attention to a certain aspect of the world. Each painter is telling us something, showing us something, emphasizing something-all of which means that, consciously(有意识地)or unconsciously, he is trying to teach us.

【1】 An artist hopes that the public will   .

    A. understand him and learn from him

    B. notice only shapes and colours in his work

    C. teach him something

    D. believe what he says in his work

【2】It is hard to explain what a painter is saying because he/she   .

    A. does not express himself/herself well

    B. uses unusual words and phrases

    C. uses shapes and colours instead of words

    D. does not say anything clearly

【3】 The writer points out that the contemporary artists might say their choices of subject   .

    A. carry a message to the public

    B. only provide interesting pattern

    C. have no pattern or form

    D. teach the public important truths

【4】What do you know from the passage?

    A. A painting is more easily understood that music.

    B. Art is merely the arranging of shape and colours.

    C. Every artist tries to say something consciously to the public.

    D. One must look beyond shape and colour to find what the artist is saying.

“Have you ever heard Louis say good morning and good night to us, as the others do?”

“Since you mention it, I never have,” said the husband. “Goodness! What are you getting at? Do you wish me to believe that I have a son who is dumb in any way? This would worry me. I want everything to go well in my family life. Fatherhood is hard. I do not want the added stress of having a dumb child.”

“Well,” said the wife, “I’ve been watching Louis recently. I think the little guy can’t talk. I’ve never heard him make one sound. I think he came into the world lacking (缺失) a voice. If he had a voice, he’d use it, same as the others do.”

“Why, this is terrible!” said the husband. “This is painful. This is a very serious matter.” His wife looked at him. “It’s not too serious now,” she said. “But it will be serious two or three years from now when Louis falls in love, as he will surely do. A young male swan will be greatly handicapped in finding a mate if he can’t say the usual sweet words to the young female of his choice.”

The husband stood quietly, thinking about what his wife had just told him. He was a brave bird, and already he was beginning to work out a plan for his little son Louis.

“If it’s really true that Louis has no voice,” said the husband to himself, “then I shall provide him with a device (装置) of some kind, to enable him to make a lot of noise. There must be some way out of this difficulty. After all, my son is Trumpeter Swan; he should have a voice like a trumpet (小号). But first I will test him to make certain that what his mother says is true.”

(Taken from The Trumpet of the Swan)

【1】How did the husband feel after hearing his wife’s words in Paragraph 2?

    A.Amazed and excited.

    B.Curious and serious.

    C.Painful and hopeful.

    D.Surprised and worried.

【2】What does the underlined part “be greatly handicapped” in Paragraph 5 mean?

    A.Have much trouble.

    B.Have great fun.

    C.Be quite uninterested.

    D.Be very successful.

【3】What is the swan couple’s talk mainly about?

    A.The dream about Louis’s future.

    B.The plan for Louis’s education.

    C.The problem with Louis’s health.

    D.The suggestion on Louis’s growth.
