Fu Cong, known as the “greatest modern pianist” and “piano poet”, died of COVID-19 at a hospital in London last year. You may not be familiar with him, but you might have read the book Fu Lei’s Family Letters (《傅雷家书》) written by his father Fu Lei, a famous translator and writer, which influenced a generation of Chinese readers.

Fu Cong was born on March 10th, 1934, in Shanghai. A lover of classical music from a young age. 1.傅聪7岁的时候开始上钢琴课。But the chaos (混乱) of wartime China prevented him from receiving a systematic musical education. 2. Then in his teens, Fu Cong moved with his family to Yunnan, where he experienced an unusual period.

Between 1954 and 1966, Fu Cong spent a lot of time away from home to train as a piano player. 3.结果,写信成为了傅雷与儿子交流的常见方式。The letters fully showed Fu Lei’s family tradition and value. To Fu Lei, education is not only a family matter, but also something with great social value.

Fu Lei also advised his son to read famous Chinese texts. He told Fu Cong to fully understand their meanings and connect ideas with feelings in order to become a better person. Fu Lei thinks learning to be a good person comes before any academic (学术) training. On 27th December 1954, Fu Lei wrote, “Everyone should be a good person before becoming an expert in any field. Otherwise, 4. that person will not get much academic achievement, no matter how knowledgeable he is.”

    5. Full of advice, encouragement, and a father’s love, Fu Lei’s Family Letters became a best seller in China. It has been sold more than one million copies in China and has been translated into Japanese and Korean. It helps many young students understand how they should live their lives.

四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Can plants talk? Modern research has found something amazing: they do communicate with each other.

It has been known for some time that plants use chemicals to communicate with each other. This happens when a plant gets attacked by insects. The plant gives out chemicals from the leaves that are being eaten. This is like a warning, or a call for help, “I’m being attacked!” When another plant gets the chemicals, it starts to give out its own, different chemicals. Some of these chemicals drive insects away. Others attract the wasps(黄蜂;蜜蜂)! The wasps kill the insects that are eating the plants. Scientists hope to learn more about this plant warning system, so that we can use it to grow more crops.

More surprisingly, plants also use sound to communicate. People can’t hear these sounds, but plants are making them. Some plants make noises with their roots. Corn and chili plants do this. Some trees make clicking noises when there is not enough water.

Most surprisingly of all, plants have an amazing system of communication that can link nearly every plant in a forest. Scientists call this system the “wood wide web”. The wood wide web is linked underground by fungi(真菌). It links the roots of different plants to each other. It is in some ways similar to the Internet we use. Using the wood wide web, plants can share information and even food with each other. However, it may lead to bad effects. Plants may use it to steal food from each other, or spread chemicals to attack other plants. Perhaps one day scientists will learn how to create a firewall to help prevent these attacks within the wood wide web.

Scientists are learning more every day about the secret ways in which plants talk to each other. Maybe one day we will know enough about plant communication to be able to “talk” with them ourselves.

【1】How is the wood wide web linked by fungi? ________

A.By making noises with their roots.

B.By connecting the roots of different plants to each other.

C.By sharing food and information with each other.

D.By spreading chemicals to each other.

【2】What is the writer’s purpose of the last paragraph? ________

A.To give people hope for further studies.

B.To praise scientists for their great achievements.

C.To call on people to protect the plants on Earth.

D.To inspire people to communicate with plants.

【3】What is the structure of the passage? ________

    A.

    B.

    C.

    D.

【4】What would be the best tide for the passage? ________

    A.The Secret Language of Plants

B.The Study on the Plant Warning System

    C.The Plants That Give Warnings

D.Why Scientists Do Research on Plants

  • 25、Imagine you’re taking an exam, and that you find it difficult to answer those questions. And time’s running out. Would you waste the little chance that you get to cheat? Probably, some of us have once cheated in the test.

Certainly, it’s not correct. It’s important to follow the rules because the world would turn into a total mess without rules. However, with time passing by and the development of the society, some rules have become barriers (障碍) to people’s success. A famous person once said, “We have so many rules in life about everything. But it’s impossible to be a creator if you’re too well-behaved. You have to think outside the box.” Some are created to restrain people, and some become old and boring. So sometimes, it’s okay to break the rules. In 1823, William Webb Ellis was a pupil at Rugby School. He was tired of playing football in the old way, so the player took the ball in his arms and ran with it during a school football match. In this way, he started a new sport: rugby (英式橄榄球), named after his school.

Since you’ve already known why someone wants to break the rules, now you need to learn how to do it.

Learn the rules first. Qi Baishi was a talented Chinese artist, but he spent much time learning traditional drawing and painting skills before he found his own styles. Master it before you break it — that’s what you can learn from great minds.

Evaluate (评估) if the result is worth it. Each person has his own values. Before breaking the rules, think over whether it will go against your values. And the moment you decide to do that, you must be ready to have a wise thought to face the bad results.

【1】How does the author develop the passage?

    A.By asking questions.

    B.By analyzing data.

    C.By telling stories.

    D.By giving some examples.

【2】What does the author think about rules?

A.Rules are created to support people.

B.All the rules go against our values.

C.Rules don’t become old and boring.

D.Some rules can stop people’s success.

【3】What does the underlined word “restrain” mean?

    A.Save.

    B.Control.

    C.Care.

    D.Trust.

【4】The author uses the example of “Qi Baishi” to tell us ________.

A.we should master the rules before we break them

  • 27、   World Book Day has arrived! It is celebrated on April 23 in most countries, but in the UK, it is usually in March. This year, our school invited a writer to talk to us about her life as an author.

The author’s name is Jo Cotterill. She is an English author who lives in Oxfordshire with her husband and daughters. She has won many awards for writing books for children and teenagers.

In her speech, Cotterill told us a lot about her childhood, as well as her love for unicorns (独角兽), her previous job as an actress and, of course, her books.  She also showed us some of her award-winning books and described their plots (情节) for us. I was fascinated by her book A Library of Lemons. It is a story about a girl, Calypso, whose father stops believing in friendship and love after his wife dies. All he believes in are books – he teaches his daughter to close her heart and only love books as well.

As you can see from the book’s title, Cotterill likes to play with words and invent new titles for her books. In fact, her writing career started with inventive (别出心裁的) titles. She said that sometimes she would read in bed on a Sunday and think about interesting titles for new books. She has another book called A Storm of Strawberries. Do you think this title is creative? I simply loved Cotterill’s talk. It inspired me to take up my pen again and keep writing.

1Which of the following is NOT true about Jo Cotterill?

A.She gave a speech at the author’s school this year.

B.She has written books for children and teenagers.

C.She told the students a lot about herself during her speech.

D.She has won many awards for acting.

2What did Jo Cotterill do before she became a writer?

    A.A teacher. B.A doctor C.An actress D.A housewife.

3The book A Library of Lemons is about _____.

    A.friendship and love

    B.Calypso and her father

C.the loss of a family member

    D.advice for choosing books

4What is special about Cotterill as a writer?

A.She writes books that are based on real stories.

B.She likes to give creative titles to her books.

C.She enjoys giving speeches about her books.

D.She has a special interest in fruit.

5Which do you think is the best title of the passage?

    A.Keep reading.

    B.World Book Day

    C.Celebrating reading with famed author.

    D.Reading is interesting.
