  • 24、Different countries have different customs. When you are in different countries, you should follow their customs.

In China, it’s impolite to talk when eating dinner. And you’re not supposed to start eating first if there are older people at the table.

Very often people who travel to the United States forget to tip(付费). It is usual to tip waiters, taxi drivers and porters who help carry your bags. Waiters expect to get a 15% tip on the cost of your meal. Taxi drivers expect about the same amount.

In England, make sure to stand in line even if there are only two of you. It’s important to respect (尊重)lines there. It’s a good idea to talk about the weather. It’s favorite subject of conversation with the British.

In Spain (西班牙), it’s a good idea to have a light meal in the afternoon if someone invites you for dinner. People have dinner very late, and restaurants do not generally open until after 9: 00 p. m.

In Saudi Arabia (沙特阿拉伯), men kiss one another on the cheek (脸颊). Your host may welcome you with a kiss on both cheeks. It is polite for you to do the same.

In Japan, people usually give personal or business cards to each other when they meet for the first time. When a person gives you a card, don’t put it into your pocket (口袋)as soon as you get it. The person expects you to read it.

Don’t forget to be careful of your body language to express something in conversations. A kind of body language that is acceptable in one culture may be impolite in another.

  • 25、"Hello"-it's one of the first words we learn as babies, yet it's one of the last ones we think to use as adults. That's regrettable(令人遗憾的) , because saying hello is more than just saying hello-it is the respect of another's worth. How might the world change-how might we change-if we used this word well? To find out, l spent one month saying hello to every person I met. Here's what I've learned.

It can improve productivity. In one of the few studies ever done on this subject, Allan Allday, an assistant professor(副教授)of special education at Oklahoma State University, had middle school teachers greet their students individually (单独地) each morning. This exchange of greetings raised the kids' productivity. School went from impersonal to personal (富有人情味的) , and that led to more class participation(参与) and better grades.

Environments influence friendliness, One study found that people in the city were less likely to shake hands with a stranger than those in the countryside. And researchers say, pleasure environments generally encourage more smiles and hellos than unpleasant ones. My experience was similar. Whatever the reason, my hellos were answered far less often than the ones in the countryside. Similarly, people in vacation areas, like the Jersey Shore, were far friendlier than those hurrying to work in the centre of the city.

It's a form of health insurance(保险). It's impossible to say hello without smiling. And smiling has been shown to lower blood pressure(血压) , make people feel happier and improve happiness. It seems that saying hello creates a similar influence.

So maybe we can make the world a better place by saying hello. After a month of doing it. I feel lighter and more connected and I have a better sense of well-being.

【1】What can we know from the first paragraph?

    A. People can say hello since they are born

    B. An assistant professor likes greeting his students every morning.

    C. The teacher who often says hello to students is very popular at school.

    D. Kids will be more active in class by exchanging greetings with teachers.

    A. smiles can take the place of hellos

    B. people living in the city refuse to say hello

【4】The underlined word "well-being" in the last paragraph means_______.

    A. health and happiness

    B. comfort and quietness

    C. pride and confidence

    D. peace and hopefulness

  • 26、   Are cell phones making the human stupid? According to a new study out of Britain, the answer is “yes”. Cell phones are reducing the human power and we can see it from the numbers.

Professor Ian Robertson of Trinity College Dublin carried out the study. His research found that most people in Britain have to remember five passwords(密码), five pin numbers, two number plates, three security ID numbers, and three bank account numbers — quite a lot to just get through the daily life! To get around this, most people use only one or two passwords. Cell phones, laptops, and other memory machines offer a way to all the numbers and passwords that the common people have to remember. As a result, people don’t use their memories.

The study found that one quarter of all Britons couldn’t give their home phone numbers when asked. What’s more, only a third of those could remember more than three birthdays of their family members.

The study divided the numbers into age groups, providing some clear results. About one third under the age of 30 couldn’t remember their home phone numbers without using to a cell phone or other machines. In the same age group, only 40% could provide important dates, such as birthdays, for family members. For those over 50, 87% could remember details(细节) on family. The study also found that 58% wrongly believed it impossible to remember most of the numbers and passwords they use every day.

1Which of the following problems is Robertson most worried about?

    A. Wasting much time on cell phones. B. Facing many information problems.

    C. Remembering too many numbers every day. D. Depending too much on cell phones for memory.

2What does the writer most probably agree with?

    A. Memory improves as people age. B. Memory becomes poorer if used less.

    C. Too many passwords lead to memory loss. D. It’s impossible to remember most passwords.

3What is the main idea of the text?

    A. Cell phones have changed people’s life. B. Cell phones should be used less often in daily life.

    C. Cell phones reduce brain power in a way. D. Cell phones help people remember more numbers.

  • 27、   Scientists are trying to find new clean energies, so that they do not pollute the environment. Solar power(太阳能)is one of them.

Solar power is a kind of electricity. It takes energy from the sun by using solar panels(太阳能金属板).People usually put the solar panels on the roofs of the houses and buildings. It is the family solar power system. Some countries are even beginning to build solar power factories by setting thousands of solar panels in some place, because there is enough sunshine. Solar power panels have many advantages. The power is easy to get and will never be used up. Whenever it is sunny, there is power. The power is clean and renewable. It helps to reduce waste and pollution. It is also great for the environment. In some places, because they are too far away to send electricity or not easy to build electric power factories, solar power is especially necessary.

More and more countries, such as China, the USA,Japan and India, encourage scientists to develop technology to put solar power into use. However, the power is not as widely used as expected(预期的).

One of the difficulties is that a solar power system needs sunshine. Some countries having lots of rain, like the UK, are not suitable to develop such power systems. Secondly,a solar power factory requires a very large place to set enough solar panels to collect sunlight and change it into electricity. Maybe an area in the desert would be one of the perfect places for such a factory to build. What’s more, solar panels are expensive at present though the energy itself doesn’t cost anything.

Today scientists are working hard to develop cheaper solar power systems. Maybe one day solar power will be one of the most important clean energies in our life.
