  • 24、   Tom, 15, is a high school student in California, US. He has gotten used to online learning. To help students who cannot keep up with their studies at home, he started a new online tutoring (辅导) business in mid-March.

It’s called Tutors for Good. It has free peer-to-peer (同龄人对同龄人的) tutoring in different subjects every week. If students need more help, there are extra(额外的)half-hour classes that cost 15 dollars.

Tom started his first business at the age of 10. He taught students how to use their electronic equipments. More recently, he tutored other students in math. When schools closed and he could no longer do in-person tutoring, he came up with the idea for an online service. He uses an online app so that students and tutors can work together.

Since starting tutorsforgood.com, Tom has asked other students to work as tutors. Lily, a junior, is tutoring in biology and chemistry. Tom tutors in math.

  • 25、   Do you think robots could pass an eighth-grade test? Guess what—they can.

The artificial intelligence (AI) system Aristo recently passed the same eighth-grade science test that some US students take. The New York Times reported. Aristo correctly(正确地) answered 90 percent of the questions on the test.

This is an example of the progress that is being made in AI development. Four years ago, 700 computer scientists tried to develop AI systems that could pass these kinds of exams. None scored higher than 60 percent.

Scientists at the Allen Institute in the US developed the system. Aristo was able to pass the exam because it can not only understand language, but also use logical thinking(逻辑思维)to solve difficult problems. For example, it can understand what a forest fire is and how it could affect(影响) animals.

The system used BERT, a kind of neural(神经的) network technology developed by Google, to answer the questions. BERT has "read" thousands of articles and can understand English. If it looks at a sentence with a missing word, it can correctly guess what the word is. With BERT's help, Aristo "read" many multiple-choice(多选的) questions. Over time, it was able to find logical patterns(逻辑模式).

Aristo’s success means that we might see new AI-based products(人工智能产品), such as search engines(搜索引擎) and databases(数据库) for hospitals. AI systems might be able to better understand users in the future.

1What did the AI system Aristo do?

    A.Help students study. B.Pass a school test.

C.Talk like a human does. D.Develop other AI systems.

    2What was Aristo's biggest success?

A.It passed several kinds of tests. B.It passed the test with a full score.

C.It scored 90 percent on the test. D.It worked out a set of test questions.

3How did Aristo answer questions in the test?

A.By using BERT. B.By asking Google for help.

C.By working with scientists. D.By copying the students' answers.

    4Paragraph 5 is written to________.

A.explain how Aristo worked B.show what else Aristo can do

C.show how Aristo was created D.describe another AI breakthrough

5From the story, we can learn that________.

A.AI-based products are not useful B.AI systems might be used in many fields

C.robots can't think logically D.Aristo will be used to help teach students

  • 26、The expression “down to earth” means being open and honest. It is easy to get on with someone who is down to earth. A down-to-earth person is the opposite of someone who acts important or proud.

Down-to-earth people could be important members of society. But they do not consider themselves to be better than others who are less important. A person who is filled with his own importance and pride is said to have his nose in the air.

Americans use another expression that is similar in some ways to down to earth. The expression is both feet on the ground. Someone with both feet on the ground is a person with a good understanding of reality(现实). He may have dreams, but he does not allow them to have influence on his understanding of what is real.

The opposite kind of person is one who has his head in the clouds. Someone with his head in the clouds is a person whose mind is not on what is happening in real life. Such a person may be called a day-dreamer.

When we have both our feet on the ground, and when we are down to earth, we do not have our noses in the air. We act honestly and openly to others. Our lives are like the ground below us— solid(牢固的) and strong.

    3This passage mainly talks about_____________.

    A. the use of some expressions

    B. dreams and achievements

    C. the lifestyle of honest people

4If you want to understand what is real in life, you have to_____________.

    A. get along with other people easily

    B. have your nose in the air

    C. be a good dreamer with quick mind

    D. have both your feet on the ground

Scientists are placing robot dogs in the homes of lonely old people to test whether they can improve the quality of life for humans. Alan Beck, an expert in human-animal relationship, and Nancy Edwards, a professor of nursing, are leading the s1on the effect of robot dogs  on old people’s feelings.

In the study, the r2, called AIBO, is placed for six weeks in the houses of some old people who live a3. Before placing AIBO in the home, scientists will collect baseline data (数据) for six weeks. These old people will keep a diary to note their e4feelings and activity before and after AIBO. Then, the scientists will review the data to test if the robot dog has produced any changes in the life of its master.

“I talk to him all the time,” says a seventy-year-old lady. “W5I do, he’ll stay with me. When I’m watching TV, he’ll stay in my arms until he wants down. He has a mind of his own.”

The scientists say they have some a6over live dogs, especially for old people.

Often the elderly are disabled and cannot care for an animal by e7walking it or playing with it.

“At the beginning, it was b8that no one would like the robot dog because it was metal and not furry.” Beck says. “But it’s amazing how quickly we have given up that belief.” “Hopefully, down the road, these robot p9could become more valuable health helpers.   They will r10their masters’ data of health conditions.
