四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   The store was closing for the night. Young Alfred Higgins, the shop assistant, was ready to go home. Mr. Carr stared at him and said, “Hold on, Alfred. Maybe you’d be good enough to take the things out of your pockets and leave them here before you go.” Alfred’s face got red. After a few seconds, he took out what he had stolen. Mr. Carr said, “Maybe I should call your mother and let her know I’m going to have to put you in prison.”

Alfred thought his mother would come rushing in, eyes burning with anger. But, to his surprise, she arrived wearing a smile. “Hello, I’m Alfred’s mother. Is he in trouble?” she said. Mr. Carr was surprised, too. He had expected Alfred’s mother to come in nervously, shaking with fear, asking with wet eyes for a pardon for her son. But no, she was calm, quiet and pleasant and was making Mr. Carr feel guilty. Soon Mr. Carr was shaking his head in agreement with what she was saying. “You are right” he said, “Sometimes, a little good advice is the best thing for a boy at certain times in his life, and it often takes the youth long time to get sense into their heads.” And he warmly shook Mrs. Higgins’s hand.

Back home, without even looking at Alfred, the mother said, “You are a bad luck. It is one thing after another, always has been. Why do you stand there so stupidly? Go to bed. “In his bedroom, Alfred just took pride in his mother’s strength. He felt he must tell her how great she was. As he got to the kitchen, he was shocked by what he saw. His mother was lifting the tea cup, her hand shook, and her face became a frightened, broken one. It was no longer cool, bright as he saw earlier in the store. With her lips moving nervously, she looked so old.

Alfred watched his mother and he wanted to cry. He realized all the troubles he brought to his mother. It seemed that this was the first time he had ever really seen his mother, especially shaking hands and the deep lines of worry in her gray face. He knew his youth coming to an end.

1Mr. Carr felt guilty because ________.

A.he mistook Alfred as the real thief

    B.he thought he was over-excited

C.he had called the police before Alfred could explain Higgins probably said to Mr. Carr

D.Alfred’s mother appeared polite and gentle

2Mrs. Higgins probably said “________” to Mr. Carr.

A.As you know, he is just a kid.

B.You know, it takes time for a youth to truly grow.

C.How can you treat my son like that!

D.If he is in jail, it won’t do you any good, either.

3The phrase “his mother’s strength” refers to Mrs. Higgins’s ________.

A.trust to her son Alfred B.attitude (态度) towards laws

C.calmness and communicating skills D.greatness as a woman

4Which of the following is TRUE ?

A.Alfred’s mother cared for his future but never made him know of it.

B.Alfred would never recognize his mistakes.

C.Alfred’s mother felt nervous about getting old.

D.Alfred was unlucky to be caught by the police.

5After the incident, young Alfred would probably ________.

A.learn to protect his mother B.be more proud of his mother

C.learn to live an independent life D.change his attitudes to future

  • 25、Soon computers and other machines will be able to remember you by looking at your eyes! The program works because everyone’s eyes are different. So in the future you won’t have to remember a number when you want to use a machine or take money out of a bank. You’ll just have to look at the machine and it will be able to tell who you are.

The eye-recognition (眼睛识别) program is already being tested in shops and banks in the USA, Britain, Spain, Italy and Turkey. Soon this technology will take the place of all other ways of finding out who people are.

However, scientists are working on other systems. Machines will soon be able to know you from the shape of your face or hand or even your smell! We already have machines that can tell who you are from your voice or from the mark made by your finger.

Eye-recognition is better than other kinds because your eyes don’t change as you get older, or get dirty like hands or fingers. And even twins have different eyes, so the program can be up to 94% correct, depending on how good the technology is. Some programs may only be 51%. In Britain, it was found that 91% of people who had tried it said that they liked the idea of eye-recognition.

In the future your computer will recognize you in the eye. So smile!

【1】What will the program for remembering eyes be used for?

    A. Banks and computers.    B. Banks and shops.

    C. Schools and computers.  D. Schools and shops.

【2】How does the eye-recognition program work?

    B. You need to speak and then look.

【3】Which recognition program is already in use?

    A. Remembering eyes and smell.  B. Remembering fingers or voices.

    C. Remembering faces and voices. D. Remembering hands and faces.

【4】What problems could there be with the eye-recognition program?

    A. Some eyes are the same.     B. Eyes can change.

    C. It is not always correct. D. Eyes can get dirty.

【5】What’s the advantage of using recognition programs in this passage?

    A. You needn’t remember a number.

    B. You needn’t take money with you.

    C. You don’t need to speak.

    D. People think they are interesting.

I always recall (回想) events from our childhood. I think about the school where we met in the first grade and went on until the 5th grade .I think about the talks we had and the things we did together. If someone wants me to describe our friendship I’d say we have been close friends for 17 years and we never got angry with each other. It’s amazing isn’t it? I haven’t been able to do that with anybody else. Sometimes I even feel guilty(有罪的). I miss her more than my own brothers and sisters. And of course besides those memories my kids are number one in my life. I have plenty of beautiful memories with them especially when they were born which also turned out to be a sad moment for both of them because they were premature babies(早产儿). Anyone who has had an experience with a premature baby can figure out what I mean.

  • 27、   From deserts(沙漠)and beaches to playgrounds we can find sand everywhere. But you might not know that sand is also useful.

"Sand is the second most-used things in the world after water" the BBC reported. However the UN said we might be running out of it.

Sand is made up of very small pieces of rock soil and minerals(矿物质). It can take tens of thousands of years to form(形成). But now we are using sand more quickly than it is being formed. According to the BBC we use about 15 billion tons of sand every year to build houses roads and other things. That 's enough to build a 20-meter-high and 20-meter-wide wall around the equator(赤道)every year.

People also put sand in the sea to make new islands. Singapore for example is now 20 percent bigger than it was in 1965. Palm islands are three large man-made islands in Dubai United Arab Emirates. They took 94 million cubic meters of sand to build.

"If people keep using so much sand it will run out in many places. For example Vietnam may run out of construction(建造)sand by 2020" Live Science noted.

Since people need so much sand they are trying to mine(开采)more of it. But this is bad for the environment. Mining sand may cause beaches to disappear and more floods to happen in places close to the sea. Also this may affect the habitats(栖息地)of many plants and animals.

1From the story we know sand___.

A.can only be found on beaches B.is the most-used things in the world

C.can never be used up D.can be used to build houses

    2How is Singapore becoming bigger?

A.People build more houses in Singapore.

B.People build more roads in Singapore.

C.People put sand in the sea to make new islands.

D.People try to mine more sand.

3How many tons of sand do we use every year?

    A.About 9 400 000. B.About 2 000 000 000.

    C.About 2 000 000. D.About 15 000 000 000.

4What is the reason more floods will happen in places close to the sea?

A.Over mining of sand. B.The weather there.

C..The increasing size of certain islands. D.The death of some plants.

5What does the writer want to tell us?

A.The UN said" Sand is the second most-used things in the world after water.

    B.We shouldn't over mine sand.

C.People took 94 million cubic meters of sand to build Singapore.

D.Sand is not being formed so quickly as we are using it.
