Our trip to the Mining Museum
On Tuesday 4th April, we took a bus to travel to the Mining (矿业) Museum because we had learning about the Gold Rushes.
__【1】___. We went past some famous places such as Sydney Harbor and the Open House along the way. We also chatted to our friends about what we had seen on TV last night.
When we arrived at the Mining Museum, we were taken to a room where we stored our bags. Our guide, Alison, then introduced us to a man named Bruce Binkley who is a miner.
Mr. Binkley talked to us about how people used to look for gold. __【2】__ . It seemed simple. You get a pan, fill it with dirt and water and then swirl (旋动) it around until the big stones are washed out along with other things. Gold, being heavier, is left at the bottom.
Next, we walked upstairs to look at pictures, information and samples (样品) of gold. We filled in a worksheet about the early discoveries of gold in Australia. ___【3】_. That part was really exciting because you had to imagine that you were a miner digging for gold.
Lunch was spent in a nearby park. ___【4】__. They were yummy! We also played hide-and-seek while we were there.
__【5】___. We boarded the bus and felt very tired. Some children even slept on the bus!
It was an enjoyable trip to the Mining Museum.
24、 I received a private message on Facebook. It began harmlessly enough: Hey, girl. Wanted to invite you to join in my next project—30 minutes of exercise and healthy eating. Promise to help you “LOSE WEIGHT!”
It was all becoming too much. Facebook was running my life, not me.
But what killed Facebook for me was when I posted a photo, and five minutes later my son asked me how many “likes” it got. His question was a wake-up call.
“Likes” are signs of acceptance and approval. I had forgotten that acceptance and approval need to come from within and had unknowingly set him a bad example.
I tried to remember what life was like before Facebook. Surfing the internet was an occasional (偶尔的) activity, and I spent a lot more time reading books and magazines. I checked in with friends through texts, emails and phone calls.
To recreate the simplicity (简单) of those days and set a healthier example for my son, I closed my Facebook account.
I’d been in the habit of checking Facebook many times a day, so I had to come up with some new habits. I carried a novel and a crossword puzzle book around with me. I rediscovered playing the piano. I started taking yoga classes.
I stopped looking at the world through my cellphone. I felt completely present at the moment. The break left me feeling better about myself, my family, my home and my life.
After a few weeks, I returned to Facebook. Now I look at the photos of my friends’ kids growing up and treasure how Facebook allows me to keep in touch with family far and wide. I have a look at it every day, but no longer with the need to post ideas and photos from time to time.
It is not an addiction (瘾) any more.

25、“Face it, Andy. You sold your soul the day you put on that first pair of Jimmy Choo’s.” That line from the movie The Devil Wears Prada is an example showing how a shoemaker has become famous in the fashion world.
Jimmy Choo (Zhou Yangjie) is a native Malaysian of Chinese origin (出身), born in 1961 into a family of shoemakers. He created his first pair of shoes at age 11. His family couldn’t pay for his schooling, so he dropped out at a young age. He had to work with his father to support the family. But his dream to be a fashion designer never disappeared, so he did all he could to enter an art college and finally took up a position in the fashion world through his talent and willpower.
Choo graduated from a college in London and had a small workshop there. He hit the international fashion scene when Vogue magazine described his designs in eight pages in 1988. His work was immediately popular and got love and support from Diana, Princess of Wales.
Jimmy Choo shoes are known for their very high heels (鞋跟) and pointed toes. However, he does some flats and lower-heeled shoes for other women. Choo co-founded Jimmy Choo Ltd. with Tamara Mellon, UK Vogue editor, but left the company in 2001.
Jimmy Choo shops have opened around the world, so his designs are more accessible to those who want a designer shoe, and can afford his prices. Choo also has a website where shoppers can view his ready-to-wear designs. The brand (牌子) of Jimmy Choo has been comparable to top brands, like Channel, LV, etc. But it’s still young and has a bright future.
We can’t imagine how hard it is for Choo to stand out in the worldwide fashion! He must have made greater efforts and had more difficulties than others. And so he did. So stop complaining about why good luck isn’t always falling on you and devote yourselves to your work now.

26、 When you sit and watch TV hour after hour, do you ever think of what it may do to your health?
More and more teenagers are becoming overweight(超重的) and near-sighted because of the large amount of time they spend in front of TV. Plus, they are growing less and less creative(创造性的) since watching TV doesn’t need active thought.
Last week, the TV Turn-off Network began its ninth TV Turn-off week in the U. S. A. The organization(组织) encourages people to play games, read books, lie under a tree, talk to family members and friends—anything but watch TV.
American school children spend about 1,000 hours a year watching TV—more time than they spend in school. Doctors in both China and the U. S. A. worry that sitting and watching TV has replaced the physical activity that is necessary to keep children healthy. Experts say that the longer children watch TV, the more weight they will get. 27、 What can we do whenever Earth faces a disaster? Is the only solution running away from the planet in spaceships? The latest Chinese sci-fi (科幻) movie, The Wandering Earth, offers a different and more ambitious (有雄心的) idea.
The film is based on a short story by Chinese sci-fi writer Liu Cixin. In the film, Earth is in danger of being destroyed by the dying sun. Humans around the world work together to build a giant engine system that will push Earth away from the sun. We're taking the Earth with us to run away.
What makes The Wandering Earth different from Hollywood-style space films? It’s probably the special cultural background (背景). For many years, “homeland” has rooted (生根) in the hearts and minds of Chinese people. One old saying is luoyeguigen. It means returning to one’s homeland in old age, like fallen leaves returning to the roots of their tree. There are also many ancient poems about homeland. “The season called the White Dew begins tonight / Nowhere as in our native place is the moon so bright”. These all show that Chinese people have the tight bond (情感纽带) with their homeland.
What is Chinese sci-fi? Guo Fan, the film’s director said, “Chinese sci-fi is a way to express our cultural and spiritual core (精神内核). Otherwise (否则), we’re just imitating (模仿) others and telling the same American stories.” And the film was released on February 5, 2019, the first day of Chinese New Year. It was a time when many people had just made the hard journey back to their hometowns. It seems the best time to tell this Chinese sci-fi story. Anyway, to us Chinese, Earth goes wherever humans go, because it’s our home.
【1】Why do people consider the film so ambitious?
A.Because humans work together to build a giant engine system.
B.Because humans are trying to take the Earth to run away together.
C.Because the film story is written by the famous writer Liu Cixin.
D.Because people have managed to run away from Earth in spaceships.
【2】Why does the writer use the old saying and ancient poems in this passage?
A.To tell the difference between Chinese and American.
B.To remind us of China’s many years of history.
C.To teach some Chinese traditional cultures and spirits.
D.To express Chinese people’s love of their homeland.
【3】What does the underlined sentences mean? ____________.

【5】What’s the best title for the passage?
A.The Latest Chinese Sci-fi Film B.What is Chinese Sci-fi?
C.Chinese Sci-fi Sets a New Path D.Chinese Sci-fi VS Hollywood-style
