四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Last week,Chicago became the first city in the US to join the “Lights Out Plan”.People turned off the lights in the city's tallest buildings so that thousands of birds could get to their winter homes.Every year in autumn, some birds fly over Chicago on their way to the south and come back the next spring.

Lights mean danger to birds.Birds find their way by looking at the stars in the sky.Lights in tall buildings are so bright that birds may mistake them as stars. This means they can not find the right way to go home.

This month, about 300 types of birds are flying over Chicago to go back to the south to live through the cold winter.

Birds fly to warmer places for a few reasons. Many birds cannot live in the cold,so they fly to warmer places. But there are other reasons, too.Birds need to look for food in the south.Another reason is that they want to have baby birds. Many birds like to have their baby birds in the same “house” they lived in last year,so they fly back there.

There are about 9,000 kinds of birds in the world, and about 600 kinds of birds migrate. Some birds can fly a very long way.Sometimes they fly to other countries. We have fewer birds today because there are fewer places for  birds.

1Why did people in Chicago turn off the lights in the city's tallest buildings last week?

    A. Because people wanted to save money.

    B. Because people were afraid that birds would lose their way.

    C. Because people were afraid that birds would make much noise.

2What does the underlined word “migrate” mean in Chinese?

    A. 迁徙   B. 定居   C. 冬眠

Save the whales"That's what the picture on lake Smith’s bedroom wall said. Jake liked having a picture that said something important: that showed he cared. He just never expected to get a chance to save a real whaleone right in his own neighborhood.

We spend hours, days and years of our lives in school. Imagine(想象) you could design(设计) your dream school, what would it be like? What would you be doing? We wanted to find out what teenagers around the world thought. Here is what they said:

Richard from the USA: My dream school would have a big swimming pool and two soccer fields. It would also have a cinema, a gym and a shopping centre. My school has none of these, and I think there should be more pleasant things for students to do while they are studying.

Sonia from Italy: I’d like a room where we can relax and play computer games. I’d also like to have a music room. I think there should be a place for everyone to go and relax after class.

Wu from Beijing: I think it would be great to have another day off (休息日) every week, besides the weekend. If that day was a Friday or a Monday, we would have a long weekend every week. What fun! I also think school should start later, at about 10 o’clock, and finish earlier.

Hannah from Australia: In my dream school, I think the teachers should give us more freedom(自由) and choice about how we study and what we study. I also think it’s not necessary for us to wear school uniforms every day. I really don’t like wearing it.

  • 27、“There’s nothing to discuss,” barked my husband when told him that Rosie, our 17-year-old daughter, had asked whether she could go to Kavos, Greece, for a holiday with her friends. “Of course she can’t. She’s too young to travel without the presence of an adult. It’s completely out of the question.”

So how come found myself standing, two weeks later, at Gatwick Airport. Tearfully, I watched our eldest child disappear through the security checkpoint. In four hours’ time, she would be in Kavos. It’s 2, 500 kilometers away from England!

There comes a time when you have to let your baby go—for many parents, it’s around the age of 17. We know that there is likely to be something wilder than hanging around by the pool and building sandcastles, but the time has come to trust that they’ll look after themselves.

But still felt worried. Rosie tried to put my mind at rest. She said she and her friends would always look after one another and that it really, really was all going to be okay.

After we had waved our last goodbye at the airport, I looked back. She was, to my surprise, looking back at me, too. Teenagers want to cut free, but it’s a frightening business for them, too.

We made Rosie promise to text as soon as she had arrived in Kavos and at least once a day after that. Around 9 a. m. on the first morning, her first message came through. It was twelve hours since I had left her at Gatwick. And all I got was: “I’m here.”

I wish there were safer places than these so-called teen destinations. But like all the dangers that life can hold for them, at some stage, all you can do is warn them, warn them again, warn them once more, and then hope that some of your messages have gotten through.

My daughter got home safely. So did her friends. But Rosie is now talking about a similar journey next year. And my alarm bells have already started ringing.

【1】We can learn from the last paragraph that the writer ________.

A.still thinks teenagers should not travel without their parents

B.believes it’s useful to warn teenagers about the dangers they might face

C.won’t allow her daughter to travel again without having an adult present

D.now encourages teenagers to learn how to safely travel without their parents

【2】After the writer and her daughter had waved goodbye to each other at the airport, ________.

A.both of them were feeling happy

B.both of them were feeling worried

C.the writer was feeling happy while her daughter was feeling worried

D.the writer was feeling worried while her daughter was feeling happy

【3】The writer didn’t receive message from her daughter until ________.

A.her daughter was about to return home

B.two days after her daughter had left her

C.her daughter had safely landed in Kavos

D.twelve hours after she had left her daughter

【4】The underlined phrase “out of the question” (in paragraph 1) probably means “________”.

    A.acceptable

    B.different

    C.impossible

    D.unnecessary

【5】Which of the following can be the best title of the article?

    A.Mother’s care

    B.Independent Daughter

    C.Time to Let Go?

    D.A Fascinating Journey!
