四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   Success doesn’t begin until you begin the walk down the pathway towards your aim. And your walk down the path always begins with a baby step. Why do we call them baby steps? Are they really anything more important than our next steps down the life’s pathway?

Baby steps are the first steps we take as an act of faith(信念). We see others stepping out and we want to show our ability to walk by following them.As we grow, we continue our development by taking additional(额外的)baby steps. Sometimes we fall; sometimes we fail. After that, all steps become an act of faith; we just become more practiced. If you say to yourself. “'I don’t want to make a fool of myself” or “I’m not good at this”, you will probably never take the baby steps towards your aims and end up in your own self-pity.

As a culture, we pay much attention to results. We think about every risk that must be taken to reach our aims. There are few people who are excellent performers of any tasks the first time they try them. They fail and succeed. Then, they build upon their abilities learned each time. They practice their skills and use their talents through baby steps before they are ready to prove themselves to the whole world.

So learn to take those baby steps to reach the goals before you. As you become more experienced, your baby steps become a walk, then a jump, and finally a sprint. That’s how our baby steps lead us through the marathon of life.

  • 25、阅读下面的短文,然后根据短文内容,在每小题所给的四个选项中选出最佳选项。

Everyone gets sick of hearing. “Put on your seat belt!”But it’s good advice. People who wear seat belts are 45 percent less likely to be killed while riding in the front seat of a car.

The US government wants more seat belt laws. It says children aged 4 to 15 are often killed in car accidents. In 2005, there were 1,627 children aged 4 to 15 killed in car accidents. More than 1,000 of those children were not wearing seat belts. If they had been wearing seat belts, 500 of those children could be alive today.

These children are too old to be in car seats, but they often sit in the back seat. Seat belt laws in many states, including Wisconsin, only require people in the front seat to wear seat belts. Children who aren’t wearing seat belts can be thrown from the car. The risk of dying in an accident is three times greater if the person is thrown from the car.

New laws could require children aged 4 to 8 to be in booster seats in the car. Booster seats help seat belts fit children properly. Right now, only 5 percent of children aged 4 to 8 are seated in booster seats(儿童座椅).

While parents have the choice of whether wearing seat belts or not, children are too young to make that choice. Even if you decide not to wear a seat belt, make sure you children are in seat belts and car seats. It’s the law and it will save their lives.

【1】 The underlined sentence “Everyone gets sick of hearing”in the first paragraph means“________”.

    A. there is something wrong with everyone’s ears

    B. all people fall ill when they hear something

    D. none of the people knows it is a piece of good advice

    A. they weren’t using seat belts

    B. they were too careful when they walked on the road

    C. they were not old enough to sit in the car

    D. they wore seat belts

【3】You must get your children to put on seat belts in order to ________.

    A. keep them comfortable in the car seat

    B. keep them safe

    C. keep them awake in the car all the time

    D. prevent all kinds of traffic accidents

  • 26、   There was a kingdom long, long ago. It was ruled by a king who loved riddles. Once a year the king made a new riddle. He gave a prize to the person who could solve the riddle.

There was a baker who also lived in this kingdom. Everyone agreed that he baked the finest breads. The baker had almost everything he needed except for a horse. If the baker had a horse, he could sell his fine breads from one end of the kingdom to the other.

One year the king made a new riddle that puzzled everyone. "I will give a prize to the person who can solve my riddle, "the king said. "Whoever wins will have the pick of one of my strongest horses." He then drew a line down the middle of the courtyard. "Make this line shorter without erasing (清除) any part of it," the king challenged.

People came from far and wide. They looked at the line and squinted at it. They even put their noses to the ground and scratched their heads.

"How can you make a line shorter without erasing any part of it?" the people in the crowd asked each other. Some of them tried. The dressmaker kicked dirt (泥土) over the line to hide it. The farmer poured water over the line to make it disappear. None of these efforts worked, and the people went home disappointed. Everyone was puzzled about how to solve this new riddle.

A week passed, and nobody had any new ideas. Then one day the baker came into the courtyard with a bag of flour (面粉).

"Your Majesty," the baker said to the king, "I can make your line shorter without erasing any part of it." Then the baker opened his bag of flour. He poured out a line of flour right next to the king's line. The line the baker made was longer than the king's line.

"Now, good king," the baker smiled, "your line is shorter."

The people were amazed. The king laughed and clapped his hands. "You have won the prize. I will give you a horse of your choice."

The baker was excited. Now he could sell his breads from one end of the kingdom, to the other.

While popular in the US,the April Fools Day tradition is even more popular in European countries, such as France and Great Britain.Although the roots of the traditional tricking are unclear, the French and the British both have their own stories about the origin of the celebration.

One story holds that the first April Fools Day was on April 1 of the year when the king of France introduced the new calendar. This new system placed the day that had formerly been the first day of a new year on April l.Many people were not used to the new calendar and continued(继续)to celebrate New Years Day on what had become the first day of April. Thus, they became the first April Fools.Others began to give funny gifts on the day to laugh at the fools who continued to celebrate the New Year on April 1.

An English story about the day, however, says that it began sometime during the 1200s.At the time,King John was in the habit of making roads out of the paths he most often walked along. The people of one particular farm village were aware of this.To avoid having their green grasslands and pastures(牧场)disturbed by one of the kings roads, they built a fence that prevented the king from walking through their countryside.

The king sent a group of messengers(使者)to inform the villagers that they must remove the fence.Upon hearing that the king was planning to do this, however, the villagers developed a plan of their own. When the kings messengers arrived, they were met by the villagers pretending to be mad.The people just throw things and ran around wildly. The messengers were surprised by this and reported to King John that these people were so mad that there was no necessity of punishing them. So,the villagers saved their farmland by tricking the king.In Great Britain, tradition only allows April Fools tricks from midnight to noon on April l.Those who try to play tricks in the afternoon become the fools themselves.

    C.It was on March lst.

    D.It was on May lst.

【3】Why did French people become the first April Fools?

    A.Because they were stupid.

B.Because they were not used to the new calendar and continued to celebrate New Years Day on what had become the first day of April.

C.Because they were happy to become the first April Fools.

D.Because they were given funny gifts on the day.

    【4】The underlined word“avoid”probably means“________”in Chinese.
