23、One day last summer, watching the boys and girls trying to catch butterflies, I remembered something happened when I was young. When I was a boy of 12 in South Carolina, something happened to me that stopped me forever from wanting to put any wild creature in a cage.
We lived on the edge of a wood, and every evening the mockingbirds(模仿鸟) would come and rest in the trees and sings. 【1】 I decided that I would catch a young bird and keep it in a cage and in that way would have my own private musician.
【2】 At first, the bird flew about the cage, but eventually it settled down in its new home. I felt very pleased with myself and looked forward to some beautiful singing from my tiny musician.
I had left the cage out, and on the second day my new pet’s mother flew to the cage with food in her mouth. The baby bird ate everything she brought to it. 【3】
Certainly the mother knew better than I about how to feed her baby.
The following morning when I went to see how my bird was doing, I discovered it on the floor of the cage, dead. I was shocked! What had happened! 【4】
Arthur Wayne, the famous ornithologist(鸟学家), happened to be visiting my father at the time. Hearing me crying over the death of my bird, he explained what had occurred. “A mother mockingbird, finding her young in a cage, will sometimes bring it poisonous(有毒的)berries(干果). 【5】 ”
Never since then have I caught any living creature and put it in a cage. All living creatures have a right to live free.
A. I had taken good care of my little bird.
B. I finally succeeded in catching one and put it in a cage.
C. I was pleased to see this.
D. No musician can sing more beautiful than the birds.
E. She thinks it better for her young to die than to live in cage.

25、 A computer can get very hot when it works on a lot of programs. It can cost a lot to cool the computer. So some scientists want to know what would happen when if the heat from the computer could be used.
Large Internet companies such as Google and Microsoft have thousands of computers. As these computers deal with information, they produce lots of heat, so they need huge cooling systems. These systems send the heat into the air.
A company in the Netherlands thinks paying to make the computers work and then paying again to cool them are a waste of energy. So the company developed a special device—the e-Radiator.
Boaz Leupe, head of the company, says that e-Radiator works as a heating system and saves money. He explains that the energy is used twice—once to heat the home and once to cool the computer and that the users don't have to pay to cool their computers.
Five homeowners in the Netherlands are testing the heating system in their homes.
"We pay for the computer usage, so in that way, homeowners get heating for free." Boaz says.
Jan Visser is one of the homeowners. "If you use the computer more, the e-Radiator produces more heat," he says. "It cannot provide enough heat if you don't use your computer often." But he is ready to try it. It's a great help to his family.
The company says e-Radiators produce heat temperature of up to 55℃. It says the system could save its users about $ 440 a year.
【1】Which of the following is true?
A.Before the e-Radiator appears, the heat of a computer is usually sent into the air.

26、Have you ever wanted to try on clothes without going to the trouble of getting undressed? If you have, here’s the device for you: the virtual(虚拟的) fitting room.
The technology, designed by Russian company AR Door, was first tried out in May. When a customer walks into a “fitting” room, they’ll stand in front of a big screen that looks like a mirror. A camera in the mirror, using Microsoft Kinect, monitors a customer’s movement and projects a 3-D image of the clothes onto you while you stand before a screen.
The room also uses augmented reality technology. “Augmented reality allows the customers to select an item of clothing without having to try it on physically,” the company told the Daily Mail. A customer can spin around to see all angles(角度) of the clothes, and can control the program by pushing virtual buttons.
AR Door is not the only company to be developing technology to help people with the way they look. Japanese company Shiseido recently presented its Magic Mirror, a virtual make-up mirror that allows people to get a full makeover in seconds.
However, the technology is not perfect. The clothes still seem to hang on the surface of the body, rather than look like the customer is actually wearing them. And people shopping for clothes are probably still better off actually trying them on.
In the end, you won’t know how something really looks and feels.

27、A popular saying goes, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” However, that’s not really true. Words have the power to cheer us up or let us down. It doesn’t matter if the words come from someone else or ourselves — the positive and negative (正面和负面) influences are just as lasting.
We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We’re usually too shy to admit(承认) it, though. In fact, we really shouldn’t be because more and more scientists believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit.
This “self-talk” helps us make ourselves active, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. It is said that as much as 77% of self-talk is likely to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying “Good job!”
Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the influence they will have. But we should realize that our words cause certain influence in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the salesperson will probably answer in a similar manner. Otherwise you may get into trouble.
Words have power because of their lasting influences. Many of us feel sorry for something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it true? Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn’t pass this test, then it’s better left unsaid.
Words have power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-confidence and encourage others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to cure? The choice is ours.
【1】There is no need for us to feel shy when we talk to ourselves because ________.
