24、The man who thinks he can
-Walter Wintle
If you think you are beaten, you are;
If you think you dare not, you don't.
If you'd like to win, but you think you can't,
It is almost a certain—you won't.
If you think you'll lose, you're lost;
For out in this world we find
Success begins with a fellow's will;
It's all in the state of mind.
If you think you're outclassed(大大超过), you are;
You've got to think high to rise.
You've got to be sure of yourself before
You can ever win the prize.
Life's battles don't always go
To the stronger or faster man;
But sooner or later the man who wins
Is the one who thinks he can!
【1】According to the writer, if you want to win, you should_________.
A. ask for help B. believe yourself

What should a kid that does karate (空手道) do over the summer? Braden chose to teach karate to people who might never have a chance to learn it. He created a class for disabled adults at a center that offers job training for them. The class was very popular.
“The students taught me more than I taught them,” Braden said. One of his students was blind and in a wheelchair (轮椅). Braden asked his karate teacher for advice. “He told me to get him to feel the action and he would probably be able to do it. I tried that and it worked, Braden said. “I learned that everyone can do something.”
At the end of that summer, Braden’s students gave a 10-minute karate show in front of their families and friends. “They felt like rock stars for the day,” Braden said.
The following summer, Braden returned to the center to teach karate. He had two new beginner classes and an advanced (高级的) class with his old students.
When the advanced class began, Braden said, “I thought I would have to teach some things again since it had been a while.” But the students remembered what Braden had taught them the summer before. He could tell that they had all practiced on their own while he’d been in school.
Braden loves teaching these students. “I’m really thankful that I can be around them. It makes me feel very proud to know them. I’m looking forward to teaching more students who are disabled here in the future.”

26、 Earlier this year in Norway, people buried a steel bottle with plant seeds, a wristwatch and rock samples (样本) in it. Why did they do this? They were making a time capsule(时间胶囊).
Time capsules are small collections of goods or information that are stored somewhere safe. They can be opened by people many years later, giving future people a view of life in the past.
They may contain (包含) newspaper articles, popular music recordings, and photos. Historians can use time capsules to learn more about societies that lived in the past.
One of the earliest time capsules was the Detroit Century Box. On Dec 31st, 1900, the city picked several photos and letters to be placed in a box. The box was then locked until Dec 31st, 2000. The things inside the capsule give us a look at Detroit in the past. There were photos of people and places, as well as letters written by local people. Some of them even gave predictions for the future. One person predicted that Detroit would have a population of 4 million by 2000. But in fact, the city’s population was about 951,000 that year.
Humans have even sent time capsules into space! The US sent two capsules into space on the Voyager spacecraft (旅行者号航天器) in 1977. They are called the Voyager Golden Records. They contain sounds and pictures that show the diversity of human life and culture. For example, they have music by German composer (作曲家) Beethoven and pictures of plants, insects and landscapes (山水风景画). The Voyager spacecraft has traveled far away from our solar system(太阳系). It is hoped that aliens might find the time capsules someday and learn about us.

Tina was a seventeen-year-old girl who always wore a bright smile. She suffered from a disease and had to use a walker most of the time. People didn’t speak to her very often. Maybe it was because she looked______ and people didn’t know how to come near to her. Tina usually broke the ice with people she met with a big “ ____ .”

In the class, one by one each student _____ to correctly recite the poem. Finally, angry and half joking, I said that the next student who ______ recite the poem had to do three push-up (俯卧撑). To my surprise Tina was next. She used her walker to move to the front of the class. ____ she recited, she made a mistake. Before I could say a word, she _____ her walker and started doing push-ups. I wanted to say, “Tina, I was just joking!” But she _____ , continued the poem and she finished the rest perfectly.
When she finished, a student asked, “Tina, why did you do that? It’s not an important assignment!” “Because I want to be like you guys! To be ____ .” Tina said.
Silence fell on the whole room when another student cried out, “Tina, we’re not normal! We are teenagers! We get in ____ all the time.” “I know,” Tina said as a big _____ spread across her face. The rest of the students laughed, too.
