四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、In some science fiction movies, evil robots refuse to die, no matter how hard people fight back.

Now science fiction has become science fact. For the first time, scientists have made a robot that can take a beating (挨打) and keep on going. Scientists from Cornell University made the robot, which looks like a spider with four legs.

Until now, even the most advanced (先进的) robot was almost certain to break down when it was damaged. That is because its computer inside simply doesn’t know how to make the machine work after its shape has changed.

To deal with this problem, the scientists put eight motors (发动机) and two sensors (传感器) that read how the machine is working. They all give signals to the machine’s software. Using this information, the computer can then figure out the machine’s shape at any moment.

The new technology is a big advance in robot-making, scientists say, and it’s far from scary. It may someday help scientists create better artificial (假的) arms and legs and give new freedom to people who losethem. It might also help scientists understand how people and animals figure out their own sense of place in space.

“It has been difficult to design robots that can work well when the environment changes or when it’s damaged,” says Olaf Sporns of Indiana University in US. “With this work, we are nearer to solving this problem.”

1Why do robots easily break down when they are damaged?

    A. They cannot repair themselves.

    B. The computer has changed a lot.

    C. They have no computers inside.

    D. The computer cannot work if the robot changes.

2The new technology allows the robot to _________.

    A. do house work for humans

    B. keep working after being damaged

    C. remember a lot of information

    D. tell people where it is

3The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 5 refers to ________.

    A. sensors   B. robots

    C. arms and legs   D. scientists

4How do the sensors in the robot work?

    A. They can replace the computer when it’s broken.

    B. They can find out where the damage comes from.

    C. They help the computer learn the robot’s condition.

    D. They can send signals to the person who uses the robot.

    5The passage is probably from_____________.

    A. a newspaper   B. an advertisement

    C. a tour guide   D. an application

  • 25、   One day, while I was waiting for my father, I saw a little boy, around two years old, running freely on the grass as his mother watched from a short distance. The boy had a big smile on his face as if he had just been set free from some sort of prison(监狱). The boy would then fall to the grass, get up, without looking back at his mother, run as fast as he could, again, still with a smile on his face, as if nothing had happened.

At that momentI thought to myself, “Why aren’t most adults this way?” Most adults when they fall down, make a big deal out of it and don’t even make a second attempt(尝试). They would be so embarrassed that they would not try again if someone saw them fall. Or, because they fall, they would find a good excuse for themselves that they’re not fit for it. They would end up being too afraid to attempt again for fear of failure .

Howeverwith kidswhen they fall downthey don’t consider their falling down as a failure, instead, they treat it as a learning experience. They try again and again until they succeed. The answer must be that they have not connected “falling down” with the word “failure”. What’s morethey probably think to themselves that it’s quite okay to fall down and that it’s not wrong to do so. In other wordsthey allow themselves to make mistakesso they remain energetic.

1What did the little boy do when he fell down?

    A. He cried and lay on the grass. B. He asked his mother for help.

    C. He got up and went on running.  D. He got up and stood there crying.

2In the writer’s opinionwhat might the little boy consider his falling down as?

    A. A failure. B. A joke. C. An interesting game. D. A learning experience.

3In the writer’s opinion, why can’t many adults succeed?

    A. Because they are afraid of being embarrassed.

    B. Because they can’t find a good excuse.

    C. Because once they fail, they won’t attempt again.

    D. Because they don’t allow themselves to make mistakes.

4The underlined word “energetic” in Paragraph 3 means   .

    A. 精力充沛的 B. 高兴的 C. 沮丧的 D. 愉快的

5What does the writer want to tell us?

    A. Practice makes perfect. B. Failure is the mother of success.

    C. All roads lead to Rome. D. Each coin has two sides.

  • 26、Choose the best answer(根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案)

Last summer, I began the biggest adventure of my life. I moved from a tiny city in England to one of the largest cities in the world.

As the plane landed in Beijing, I felt excited that I'd finally arrived after months of planning. One of the first things 1 did was visiting one of the city’s hutongs(胡同). Strolling (闲逛)around the narrow streets, the warm air was filled with the smell of delicious food as people played mahjong and rode their old-fashioned bikes . This was the first moment I thought, "Wow, I'm in China."

Beijing couldn't be more different to my own home city, Preston, which has a population of just 114,000. It has one shopping street that's around 500 meters from one end to the other and on Sunday, all the shops close at 4:00 pm. There isn't a great deal of choice when it comes to restaurants, either, and as a fan of food, I couldn't wait to see what Beijing has to offer. I still don't have a favorite dish here yet.

I'm slowly getting used to the fast-paced(快节奏的) lifestyle and different way of life , but I still find some habits here quite strange and humorous .

British people are raised to not make any sort of bodily noise at the dinner table or in public , so to hear the loud noise of Chinese diners or the throat-clearing(清嗓子) sounds of colleagues(同事) was a funny culture shock at first .

Something else I’ve discovered is the attention that being a foreigner brings. On the subway or in streets and restaurants, some people stare (盯着看) and try to take secret photos of me. It seems that I am a famous person or a popular star.

In the future, I hope to see many other parts of China. My dream is to buy a motorbike travel from one end to the other of this beautiful country, taking photos and meeting new people along the way.

My adventure in China is only just beginning, and I can't wait to see how it turns out.

C.he loved the food immediately D.he got used to the fast-paced lifestyle slowly

4______ are a culture shock to the author at first when he was in Beijing.

Taking pictures of foreigners   Clearing throat in the workplace

Playing mahjong in public area   Smiling kindly toward foreigners

    A.①②③ B.①②⑤ C.②③④ D.③④⑤

5We can infer (推断)from the article that the author ______.

A.is a terrible motorbike rider B.is looking forward to becoming a famous person in China

  • 27、   Heimaey, an island in Iceland, is home to just about 4,200 people. But each spring, more than1.5million puffins (海鹦) visit Heimaey and its neighboring islands. They go there to breed(繁殖). Around August, puffin chicks head for the ocean. That’s when the trouble begins.

Puffin chicks usually follow the light of the moon to the sea. But Heimaey’s bright lights make them unable to think and act right. Each year,a large number of  them end up lost—-or worse. Often, some are hit by cars or eaten by cats.

Luckily, there is the Puffling Patrol. Each breeding season, the children of Heimaey work together to form search groups. At night they go to the streets carrying flashlights and cardboard boxes. “When you see a bird, you try to corner it and get it into the box,” Eldur Hansen said. The 14-year-old boy has caught several puffins this way. No one knows exactly when or how the Puffling Patrol got its start. But each year, it saves thousands of puffin chicks.

Puffins are now listed as a vulnerable species(易危物种).The main reason is that the number of small fish in the ocean is dropping. This is because of overfishing, pollution and rising ocean temperatures. Puffins need the fish for food.

Scientists worry puffins will die out if ocean temperatures continue to rise. But the Puffling Patrol inspires them a lot. “The message is that people can make a difference,” says Dr. Stephen W.Kress,an expert in seabird protection.

1The puffin chicks’ trouble begin________ .

    A.in spring B.around August

C.when they are born D.when they arrive at the ocean

3What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?

A.What puffins feed on. B.How puffins catch fish.

C.Why puffins are a vulnerable species. D.Why puffins are important to the ocean.

    4What does Dr.Stephen W.Kress probably agree with?

A.The Puffling Patrol does a good job. B.Puffins will die out in the near future.

C.Haimaey has less pollution than before. D.Ocean temperatures will continue to rise.
