24、 Programming Pain
Robots are useful and taking place of humans in some areas because they never get tired and can't feel pain. However, some researchers believe it's a good idea to program robots to feel pain.
Researchers from Leibniz University of Hannover in Germany are working to develop an artificial(人造的)robot nervous system to teach robots how to feel pain. "Pain is a system that protects us," said Johannes Kuehn, one of the researchers. "When we try to avoid the pain, it helps us not get hurt.”
Think about how many injuries you would receive if you couldn't feel pain. Even though pain hurts, it helps us avoid danger and treat our wounds. The same will be true for robots. As a great number of people work closely with robots, the robots must behave in a safer manner. Kuehn believes that by protecting robots from damage(伤害),they'll be protecting people as well. Damage,to robots if left unseen could lead to workplace accidents.
Rather than feel pain, some robots are designed to show pain or see it in others. Asada, an engineer at Osaka University in Japan, and his workmates have made sensors (传感器)that pick up many types of touch signals(信号).These touch and pain signals can turn into emotions and expressions on a robot’s face. Asada believes that these systems could finally lead to robots seeing the pain on human faces, an important skill for robots designed to care for elderly people, for example.
Antonio Damasio, a professor at the University of Southern California, argues that programming robots with a sense of pain may cause an artificial sense of feeling to develop. But he says that this communication is not the same thing as a robot truly feeling and expressing emotions or pain. If one day, robots could actually feel as humans do, Damasio has a suggestion for the number one rule for robots: Feel good.

After people have been used to their new work situation. But what if your job was to control a multi-billion-dollar space rover (探测车) located on a planet nearly 200 million km away from Earth?
A team of NASA scientists is doing just that. In order to follow social distancing rules, these scientists have had to work from home. But they’ve still found ways to work together and take care of the complex (复杂的) tasks that are needed to keep the Curiosity rover working on Mars.
Their work-from-home setups (装配) as seen in photos provided to CNBC and ScienceAlert, look much like home office setups. They use ordinary computers. But instead of working on spreadsheets (电子制表), these scientists are programming complex sequences (序列) of instructions that are then sent to the rover. These instructions allowed the rover to find a rock sample (样本) in a location on Mars called “Edinburgh”.
Usually, the team’s 20 scientists work together by communicating through apps or video meetings. One scientist might have to follow 15 message channels (通道) at once.
NASA gave the scientists headsets (耳机) monitors and other equipment to allow them to do their jobs from home. However, the goggles (眼镜) they usually use to analyze (分析) pictures from Mars could not be sent out. So they have to depend on red-and-blue glass lenses (镜片) instead.
But difficulties like these have not been a problem for the scientists. In fact, getting used to changing situations is “classic, textbook NASA,” according to the head of science operations Carrie Bridge. “We’re presented with a problem and we find out how to make things work. Mars isn’t standing still for us; we’re still exploring,” she said.
【1】During the outbreak, NASA scientists ________.
A.use different computers to work
B.work on spreadsheets
C.are making Curiosity rover work from home
【2】Working at home is not convenient for NASA scientists because ________.
A.they have to use red-and-blue glass lenses
B.they cannot communicate person to person
C.they don’t have the equipment to do their jobs
【3】Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the article?
A.Mars is nearly 200 million km away from Earth.
B.One scientist might have to contact with several other scientists at the same time.
C.NASA scientists can’t work together.
【4】How do we understand “classic, textbook NASA” in the last paragraph?
A.NASA wrote a textbook on how to deal with problems.
B.NASA always finds ways to deal with new situations.
C.Difficulties are uncommon for NASA.
【5】What is the story mainly about?
A.NASA’s project on Mars.
B.The problems NASA faces.
C.How NASA scientists work at home.
28、 More and more people believe that technologies are great for learning. Today, teaching tools like iPads are used in a lot of courses, i 【1】 language, history and science.
Many teachers are supporters of using iPads in language learning. They say that students now have much more time for discussion in the classroom. Instead of spending valuable class time listening to texts or watching teaching videos. students can do this on their own and come to class prepared for discussion.
The teachers also say that iPads allow students to learn at their own pace. Some students might listen to a dialogue only once and understand it. so they can save time for doing other things. Other students. however. might need to listen to the same dialogue again and again to understand it. Using iPads is especially h 【2】 to the students who are learning a language at different paces.
The students who are using the new tool in some courses are also happy. They believe that using iPads is a more enjoyable way to learn(like listening to stories and watching movies). The class has become much more interesting and creative.
There are other advantages for students. By using iPads, they can pay more attention to the material and learn more. Teaching notes are s 【3】 in their iPads and are easy to find. Some students spend more time studying now. 'I can listen to my language material or watch teaching videos on the bus, instead of having to wait till I get home.' a student explained.
But many adults c 【4】 that technologies like iPads are doing harm to students. They worry that students might use iPads to download teaching notes and use them to cheat during exams. Some believe that iPads may separate students from each other. If a student spends more time watching videos on an iPad. he will have f 【5】 chances to have face-to-face communication with others.
However, technologies are a 【6】 _ a part of most students' day-to-day lives. As for cheating, teachers can ask students to hand in their iPads when they take exams. Education needs to make c 87 with the times as technology is playing an important part. We should look forward to a wonderful future when iPads and other technologies can add a lot to the classroom.
