四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Have you ever had the strange feeling that you were being watched? You turn around and, sure enough, someone was looking right at you!

Parapsychologists(灵学家) say that humans have a natural ability to sense when someone is looking at them. To research whether such a “six sense” really exists, Robert Baker, a psycholog-ist(心理学家) at the University of Kentucky, did two experiments.

In the first one, Baker sat behind unknowing people in public places and stared at the backs of their heads for 5 to 15 minutes. The subjects (受试者) were eating, drinking, reading, studying, watching TV, or working at a computer. Baker made sure that the people could not tell that he was

sitting behind them during those periods. Later when he questioned the subjects, almost all of them said they had no sense that someone was staring at them.

For the second experiment, Baker told the subjects that they would be stared at from time to time from behind in a laboratory setting. The people had to write down when they felt themselves being stared at and when they weren’t. Baker found the subjects were no better at telling when they were stared at and when they weren’t.

Baker concludes that people do not have the ability to sense when they are being stared at. If people doubt the outcome of his two experiments, said Baker, “I suggest they repeat the experiments and see for themselves.”

【1】What’s the aim of the two experiments for?

    A. Prove why humans have a sixth sense.

    B. Explain when people can have a sixth sense.

    C. Show how people act while being watched in the lab.

    D. Study whether humans can sense when they are stared at.

【2】What sense do parapsychologists say that humans have?

    A. A natural ability   B. A natural staring ability

    C. A strange thinking     D. A looking feeling

【3】The underlined word “outcome” in the last paragraph most probably means?

    A. Value     B. Result

    C. Performance D. Connection

【4】In the second experiment, the subjects ________.

    A. could tell when they were stared at and when they weren’t.

    B. couldn’t tell when they were stared at and when they aren’t

    C. couldn’t tell when they were stared at but could tell when they weren’t.

    D. could tell when they were stared at but couldn’t tell when they weren’t.

【5】What can we learn from the passage?

    A. People are born with a sixth sense.

    B. The experiments support parapsychologists’ idea.

    C. The subjects do not have a sixth sense in the experiments.

    D. People have a sixth sense in all places.

  • 25、   Birth order—does it matter? Are you different because you are the first, second, or third child in your family—or maybe the last of nine?

A study found that first-borns have an average (平均) IQ that is three points higher than people who fall into a different place in the birth order, perhaps because first-borns often help younger brothers and sisters, which improves their own skills. In 2007, an international organization of CEOS found that 43% of CEOS are first-borns, 33% are middle children, and 23% are last-borns. First-borns are more likely (可能) to be doctors and astronauts and get higher pay.

If first-borns are more successful, last-borns are generally more agreeable. They are also more likely to be funny, possibly to get attention from all the bigger people at the dinner table. Mark Twain and Stephen Colbert were both the youngest in large families, and Jim Carrey was the youngest of four. According to a 2007 Time magazine, article, “The Power of Birth Order,” last-borns are more likely to be artists and successful businessmen.

Then there are the middle children: we have not ignored (忽视) them! Many middle children are short of one-on-one time with their parents. They often feel short-changed: the oldest gets more rights, and the youngest is “spoiled (宠坏的)”. Though they may be ignored, middle children are more likely to grow into easygoing adults.

Many factors (因素) make us who we are, but if the research is correct, birth order may be one of the most important factors.

1Who is most likely to be a CEO?

    A.A first-born. B.A second-born. C.A last-born.

2What can we learn about Jim Carrey?

A.He was likely to be given low pay.

B.He was likely to be agreeable.

C.He was likely to have more rights in a family.

3What does the underlined word “short-changed” in Paragraph 4 probably mean in Chinese?

    A.受欢迎的 B.受控制的 C.受亏待的

4We can learn from the research that birth order ________.

A.has no influence on IQ B.may decide who we are C.is a factor in making us powerful

5What would be the best title for the text?

A.Where Is Your Place in the Family?

B.What Makes You Successful in Life?

C.How Can You Grow into Big Man?

  • 27、   Research has already suggested that opening a book may help improve brain function and reduce stress. Now, a team led by Joanna Sikora of the Australian National University is looking into the benefits of growing up around a bookfilled environment; the researchers' new study suggests that homes with libraries can arm children with skills that last well into adulthood.

The study looked at data from 160 000 adults from 31 countries, including the United States, Australia, Turkey and Chile. Participants (参与者) filled out surveys with the Programme for the International Assessment of Competencies, which measures proficiency (水平) in three areas: literacy (读写能力), numeracy and information communication technology. People, 25 to 65 years old, were asked to tell how many books were in their house when they were 16 years old. The research team was interested in this question because home library size can be a good sign of bookoriented socialization. Participants were able to choose from a given range of books that included everything from10 or less to more than 500.

The surveys, which were taken between 2011 and 2015, showed that the average (平均的) number of books in participants' childhood homes was 115, but that number varied widely from country to country. The average library size in Norway was 212 books, for example; in Turkey, it was 27. In all, however, it seemed that more books in the home was linked to higher proficiency in the areas tested by the survey.

The effects were most marked when it came to literacy. Growing up with few books in the home resulted in below average literacy levels. Being surrounded by 80 books raised the levels to average, and literacy continued to improve until libraries reached about 350 books,at which point the literacy rates leveled off. The researchers saw similar things when it came to numeracy; the effects were not as pronounced with information communication technology tests, but skills did improve with increased numbers of books.

So, what does the new study tell us? Take, for example, an adult who grew up with hardly any books in the home, but went on to get a university degree compared to an adult who grew up with a large home library, but only had nine years of schooling. The study found that both of their literacy levels were almost the same. So, literacywise, bookish childhood makes up for a good deal of educational advantage, the study authors write.

Further research is needed to decide exactly why exposure to ( 沉浸在) books in childhood encourages valuable skills later in life, but the study offers further evidence to  suggest that reading has a powerful effect on the mind. And so home library size might be important because, as the researchers note, children emulate (模仿) parents who read.

1The second paragraph is mainly about .

    A.what the study found out

B.how the study was carried out

C.who were invited to the research

D.why the researchers did the study

2The phrase leveled off in Paragraph 4 probably means .

    A.backed to average B.started falling

    C.continued to grow D.stopped rising

    3The example in Paragraph 5 shows .

A.the disadvantage of having little school education

B.the effect of having a home library in childhood

C.the necessity of raising people's literacy level

D.the importance of getting a university degree

4What can we learn from the passage?

A.The study explained why bookish childhood encouraged valuable skills.

B.Adults benefit more from a home library than children.

C.Home library size has little to do with numeracy level.

D.Parents who love reading benefit children a lot.

  • 28、Drawing might help you think

When you're sitting in class, have you ever drawn pictures in the margins of your notebooks?

If so, your teacher might have told you 1(stop). Many people think of doodling(涂鸦) as a distraction(精神涣散) from more important things. But it might be just the opposite.

One study shows that doodling may help you remember things you hear. In 2009 researchers asked two groups of people to listen to a phone message. One group 2 (encourage) to doodle, but the other was not. Neither group knew that it would be asked to remember information from the message. But the group that doodled remembered 29 percent more.

Other people 3 (suggest)other uses for drawing. Jesse Prinz, a professor who studies doodling, says it can help you think creatively. Walking away from a problem to draw

might actually help you solve it. When you come back, you 4 (have)a fresh perspective and figure out an answer more quickly.

Two years ago, an author named Sunni Brown 5 (write)a book on doodling. She argues that doodling is a tool that can help people think. She admits that people see doodling

as doing nothing, but she wants to change that. In fact, she runs a business that helps companies

improve organization and planning through doodling. Brown 6 (believe)doodling is helpful because it incorporates(整合)many ways of learning. You lean in four ways: seeing, hearing, reading or writing, and through movement. The more ways you use, the better you learn.

And when you doodle while you 7 (listen )to a lecture, you use all four.

You might think that being good at 8 ( draw)is important for doodling. But if the point of doodling is to help you think, then it doesn't matter what the picture looks like. Even if you're not an artist, doodling can help you. So next time you need help focusing, pick up a pen and doodle away!
