21、In only a few months, a disease has completely changed the world. Thousands of people have died and millions of people have fallen ill. For the rest of us, our way of life has become totally different.
From New York to London, the busiest pubs and theaters have been left empty. International flights are being canceled. People are working from home. These are all aimed at controlling the spread of the COVID-19. However, all of these changes have also led to another unexpected benefit: a drop in carbon emissions(碳排放). Compared with this time last year, levels of pollution in New York have been reduced by nearly 50 percent.
So will the COVID-19 turn out to save the environment?
Kimberly Nicholas is an environmental scientist in Sweden. To answer that question, she says, you have to find out why emissions have dropped. Take transport as an example. It makes up 23 percent of global carbon emissions. These emissions have fallen as people are staying at home. Nicholas says they will remain lowered until the COVID-19 is totally brought under control. But what will happen after this outbreak(爆发)is over?
“It’s hard to say,” Nicholas says. While staying at home, many people have realized the importance of family. In the short term, some people will still avoid travel and spend time with their families instead. However, some people are feeling bored after not being out for a long time. They are eager to return to their old habits and may even travel more often. If that happens, transport-related emissions could come back.
But Nicholas says she and many other scientists have seen hope. The outbreak of the COVID-19 shows that at the national and international level, if we need to take action, we can. When we look out for each other, we all can make a big difference.
【1】From New York to London, people are working from home in order to ________.
A.save time
B.make less carbon emissions
C.save money
D.control the spread of the COVID-19
【2】According to Kimberly Nicholas, will the COVID-19 save the Earth in the end?
A.Yes, it will save the Earth in the end.
B.No, it won’t save the Earth in the end.
C.The COVID-19 will only cause more pollution in the end.
D.It’s hard to say whether it will save the Earth or not.
【3】According to Nicholas, some people will still avoid travel for some time after the COVID-19 outbreak is over because ________.
A.they want to continue to save the Earth
B.they have lost their interest in traveling
C.they have realized the importance of family
D.they don’t have enough money to travel abroad
【4】Why has Nicholas seen hope?
A.Because she has discovered a new method of saving the Earth.
B.Because she has seen that people can take action if they need to.
C.Because many people have changed their attitudes towards family.
D.Because more and more people have realized the seriousness of climate change.
【5】Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.New York has shown a record drop in pollution after the COVID-19 broke out.
B.Nobody has been killed by the COVID-19.
C.Most people will travel more often after the COVID-19 outbreak is over.
D.The COVID-19 would make the Earth cleaner.

Scrub, the pet cat of Jennifer’s, was found! It got lost five years ago. Jennifer looked for it everywhere but failed each time. She thought Scrub would never come back. But one day she got a call from an animal shelter(庇护所)and was told they had found Scrub!
How did they know Scrub belonged to Jennifer? How did they know Jennifer’s phone number? All the information was available because of the microchip, a very small computer chip(薄片). It was placed under Scrub’s skin many years earlier. The microchip is usually placed under the skin of an animal’s shoulder to keep its ID number.
Once the chip is in place, the pet does not feel it anymore. When lost pets are brought to animal shelters, people there use a special tool to look for the microchip and read the ID number on it, then they’ll call the microchip company to match the number to the information of the pet’s owner. This is how the shelter was able to tell Jennifer that they had found Scrub.
Microchips have helped thousands of owners get their lost pets back. In New York, a dog named Roxy was missing for months. Then a woman found her on a busy street in New Jersey. No one knows how the dog got to a different state. However, thanks to her microchip, Roxy was soon returned to her grateful owner.
In 2008, a couple got their cat George back after he had disappeared 13 years earlier! When George got lost, the couple tried everything to find him. They visited animal shelters every day for six months, made posters and even offered a $500 reward(酬金).As years went by, they thought George would never be back till they got the call from an animal shelter. Without the microchip, the cat would never be able to come home again.
Microchips can not only work for a pet’s whole life but help lost pets no matter how far they’ve been away from home. This is why microchips may be just the thing to help bring missing pets back home.

Jerry: It’s great that our class is going to publish an English newspaper.
Alice: Yes. But we have no idea about the title of our newspaper yet at the moment. I think we’d better choose a short one because it’ll be easier to read and remember. Maybe we should think about it a bit longer. By the way, how often should we publish it?
Jerry: I think we can publish it once a month.
Alice: That sounds reasonable. Which section do you think should be on the front page?

Jerry: I think so, too. I’m sure our English newspaper will be wonderful and we can learn a lot from it.
