I love to help
At least once a week after school I go to my school’s library to help tutor students in math. I check in at the main desk, and I pick up my badge: “Math Tutor”. It is quite an old badge, which some tutor made by hand years ago. I sit down at a desk, and I take out my own work. Some days are quite slow, and I might as well get a little homework done while I’m waiting for someone to help.
Sometimes, there is more than one person who requires help, and I just sit at the head of a table and supervise people doing their homework. I answer any questions that come up along the way. But I mostly work on my own assignments, and they ask me for help whenever they need it. I walk them through a problem, and they finish the rest of it themselves.
However, other times, there is just one person that comes to me, and they are in need of more than just homework help. Perhaps they have missed a couple days of school, or they simply don’t get the concepts that the teacher is teaching, and need extra help. I sit down with them, and talk to them about their problem. As I slowly go over each problem, I love watching the expressions on their faces change from frustration and confusion to understanding and triumph.
I love being a volunteer tutor because of the wonderful, warm feeling I get when I know that I was able to help someone understand or learn something new. I hope to continue doing it for the rest of high school.

22、 For many animals, the sea is a dangerous place. Overfishing and pollution are killing many sea animals. But the number of cephalopods (头足类动物) – sea animals that include octopi (章鱼) and squid (鱿鱼) – has been growing for the past 60 years.
Zoe Doubleday is a scientist and she did a study of cephalopods. She says cephalopods’ special abilities made their numbers to grow.
① These animals can change their colour and body shape. They grow fast and live for only one or two years. “This allows them to get used to changing environments more quickly than other sea animals,” Doubleday said.
② What’s more, rising sea temperatures might make animals age faster, she says. They might be growing faster and giving birth to more babies.
③ So people can find them in both cold and hot places. Because they can easily get used to their environment, they are known as the “wild grass of the sea”.
④ Will octopi and squid take over the world one day? According to Doubleday, that won’t happen. The growth of cephalopods could slow down if the animals run out of food and start eating each other. Overfishing could also change their numbers.
For now, the cephalopod growth is good news for other sea animals. “The growing number of cephalopods could be good for sea animals and birds that eat cephalopods,” Doubleday said.

Jim and Robert chose two cards for each day from Monday to Friday. Then they would hang them on the weekday task board. Jim likes to clean the bathroom, so he picked up the card "clean the bathroom". Robert loves to make the bed so he picked up his favorite card. Jim again picked up "wash vegetables” and Robert chose "feed the fish". Soon the two boys were happy to take away all the cards.
