21、 Beijing Opera used to sound strange to Dou Yi. The 14-year-old Beijinger said whenever she came across Beijing Opera on TV, she changed the channel (频道). Like most of today’s teenagers, Dou loves pop music.
But since Dou entered the Xuanwu Branch School of Beijing No. 15 Middle School, she has been studying Beijing Opera in music class every week.
Dou and her classmates listen to Beijing Opera and learn the basics (基础知识) from professional actors. They also sing along with the operas.
“We laugh sometimes because the tunes (声调) are really hard to learn,” said Dou. But she said that now she would watch Beijing Opera on TV.
“After all, I am no longer a layman,” she said.
Since 2008, schools around the country have been teaching students Beijing Opera. It’s part of a plan to introduce young people to the country’s artistic traditions. Clearly, Dou’s school has been taking the job seriously.
Yang Ning, 14, is Dou’s classmate. She has been studying Beijing Opera since she was 8. She is a member of the school’s Beijing Opera club.
Yang said she had learned a lot from Beijing Opera.
“I learned a lot of history from the operas,” she said. “I’ve also found out about many ancient poems, since there are so many of them in the operas.”
Yang doesn’t think everyone can learn to sing Beijing Opera well, but she does say that it’s helpful for all people to learn about it.
“The more you learn about it, the more you understand it. If people do study it, this old art form won’t disappear. It would be a great pity if it did!” she said.

22、I moved here three years ago, and because of my business, I needed to fly both to Taiwan and the United States often. When I travelled alone, I felt lonely because I couldn’t speak English well. I made a decision that I had to learn English and study very hard.
I like to be in Rita Colina’s class at the Chinese Community Centre in Houston. I have many chances to speak and talk to others. Before I came to the class, I always walked away when I met any foreigner. I know that pronunciation, grammar and conversation are very important for me, so I came to this class. It’s completely different now. I try to communicate with Americans in English by myself. It’s really great for a person like me to live here. Now I like to talk to foreigners. I like to go to American supermarkets, Starbuck’s coffee shops and the post office. I can drive anywhere I like to go because I know the road signs. Not only the skill of life becomes more flexible(灵活的), but also I really like to live here.
I learn English in four ways: First of all, I listen to what the teacher teaches in class. Then I keep speaking during the class. Second, I do my homework right away when I get home. I memorize at least five vocabulary words every day. Thirdly, I listen to American radio stations, and I watch the news channels and other American programmes with my family every day. I ask them whatever I don’ t know. Finally, I go to American stores as often as possible, so I will have more chances to learn more new words, and find any chance to talk to Americans in English.
Anyway, the most important thing is not to be afraid to open your mouth. It doesn’t matter even though you speak incorrectly. It’s a good start. I’m very grateful for the teaching and encouragement from Ms Colina. That is the key to the door of learning English for me.

The visitor was disappointed. He then said sorry for taking up Rossetti's time, but asked if he would just look at a few more drawings - these were drawn by a young art student. Rossetti looked over the second batch (一批) of sketches and immediately became interested in them. "These," he said, "Oh, these are good. This young student has great talent.
