  • 21、Betty has travelled to Beijing several times since 1980, and this is how she has seen the city change.

    The Great Wall

    Shopping

    Then

Visiting the Great Wall at Badaling on my first trip, I ran into only a few tourists from local Chinese tour buses. Years later, to avoid the crowds at Badaling, I went to the Great Wall at Mutianyu. My six-year-old son was so excited that he said, “Every step is enjoyable!”

In the 1980s, tourists used foreign exchange certificates(证券) and the Chinese people used renminbi. Credit cards (信用卡) were not widely used.

We visited the Beijing Department Store (opened in 1955). And it was on the street, Wangfujing. Everything in it was very cheap and made in China.

    Now

Most tourists still see the Great Wall at Badaling, but a great many come to Mutianyu now. Many hikers like to visit the Great Wall at Jiankou for the beautiful sights. There are no cable cars (缆车) and often even no steps.

People can pay in many new ways such as Alipay (支付宝) and Wechat Pay. Also, credit cards are accepted almost everywhere.

________ Doctors told him that the only way to save his father’s life was with a bone marrow transplant (骨髓移植). Lu was the only person in the family to save his dad.

But there was one big problem—he had only 30 kg. And doctors told the family that the boy had to gain weight (增重) to at least 15 kg.

In order to do the transplant safely, Lu ate a lot for five meals a day. This made it hard for him to walk. He was only a primary school student, but in the end, he gained enough weight and saved his father in September.

“Adding each kilogram means I’m one step closer to helping my dad. I can do it,” Lu said. The boy got an award for his filial piety (孝顺) in a contest called Searching for Filial Teens. • 23、Tara: Nicole, I have a problem.

    Nicole: What kind of problem?

Tara: I have a job interview tomorrow, and I heard that the boss will ask to see my Facebook profile. I’m not comfortable with that.

Nicole: That’s illegal in some countries, like Canada. Can you refuse?

Tara: I want to, but I’m afraid that if I do, I won’t get the job!

Nicole: I guess I see the boss’s point. Looking at a candidate’s Facebook page will tell him a lot about the person’s life and personality.

Tara: That’s true. Most of my life is on Facebook. My profile could tell him about my hobbies, my interests and what my friends think of me. I find the idea of showing a boss that much personal information disturbing.

Nicole: Companies run background checks on possible employees all the time. And this is just another way for him to see if you’re trustworthy. Besides, I’ve seen your Facebook page, and you don’t have anything to hide.

Tara: Maybe not, but my friends might still post things on my Facebook page that make me look bad.

Nicole: I think the boss will probably realize the differences between your posts and your friends’ posts.

Tara: He might, but I’m also worried that something the boss sees on Facebook could be misleading. For example, I wore a really crazy costume to my friend’s party last week. I wouldn’t want him to think I always do strange things like that.

Nicole: Yeah, but I don’t think the boss would assume that one picture shows how you always act. I’m sure he’ll be pretty cautious about drawing conclusions too quickly based on Facebook.

【1】How does Tara find the idea of showing a boss that much personal information?

    A.She thinks it great trouble.

B.She has decided to refuse it.

C.She is quite pleased with it.

D.She has no idea of it.

【2】What does Nicole want to express by saying “I guess I get the boss’s point”?

A.Nicole wants to help Tara get more reasons why the boss did so.

B.Nicole has just understood the boss’s real purpose.

C.Nicole would like to be a friend indeed.

D.Nicole will check Tara’s personal information for the boss.

【3】How can we understand the word “candidate’s”?

  • 24、Language students often think they have memory problems. They worry because they can’t remember words. In fact, the problem usually isn’t with their memory. The problem is with how they study.

To remember words better, you need to understand how memory works. There are two kinds of memory: short term and long term. When you see, hear, or read something, it goes first into short-term memory. But short-term memory lasts for only a few seconds. You will only remember something longer if it goes into long-term memory. Your long term memory is like a very big library with many, many books. And like a library, it’s organized(有条理的). When you put away a book—or memory—you can’t just leave it anywhere. You have to choose a place where you can find it again.

How can you do this with vocabulary? The answer is to work with the word and think about the word in new ways. You can do this by writing new sentences that include it. Even better, you can invent a little story about the word, with people or places that you know. Another way is to make a picture in your mind with the word. For example, if the word is “height”, you can think of the tallest person you know and try to guess his or her height. All of these activities are good ways to think about words. They make the meaning of words stronger in your long-term memory. And they give a way to find a word when you need it.

【1】In the writer’s opinion, students can’t remember words because ________.

    A.they are too worried

    B.they don’t use a proper way

    C.they have memory problems

    D.they don’t like to study

【2】The underlined words “long-term” means ________ in Chinese.

    A.长的学期

    B.长期的

    C.长的术语

    D.长的条款

    【3】The long-term memory ________.

A.lasts for only a few seconds

B.is like a very big lake with lots of fishes

C.is like a very big library with many, many books

    D.is bad for students’ study

【4】According to the passage, you can memorize vocabulary by ________.

    A.reading as often as possible

B.writing emails to the people you know

    C.taking many photos about them

D.making pictures in your mind with the words

【5】This passage mainly tells us about ________.

A.how to improve ways to remember words

    B.language students’ problems in study

C.short term and long term memory

D.how to make the meaning of words stronger
