二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   As warming continues, scientists warn the oxygen content of oceans across the planet could be more and more reduced, with serious consequences for the future of fish and other sea life.

    1. One is the simple fact that as water gets warmer, it can hold less dissolved(溶解的)oxygen. The other reason is less obvious.2—either from the atmosphere, or from photosynthesizing algae floating at the top of the sea. The oxygen then spreads to the deep ocean as the surface water slowly sinks.

Global warming is expected to reduce the mixing of the ocean by making surface seawater lighter. That's because in a warmer world we can expect more rainfall and more melting of glaciers, icebergs, and ice sheets.3.The extra heat from the warming atmosphere will also make surface water expand and thus make it lighter still.4. Instead, more of the oxygen will remain near the surface, where it will be used up by oxygen-breathing organisms.

A low-oxygen ocean may become an inescapable feature of our planet. A team of Danish researchers wondered how long oxygen levels would drop if we could somehow reduce our carbon dioxide emissions to zero by 2100. They determined that over the next few thousand years oxygen levels would continue to fall, until they declined by 30 percent. The oxygen would slowly return to the oceans, but even 100,000 years from now they will not have fully recovered.5

A.The entire ocean gets its oxygen from the surface.

B.It's not known why the oxygen level of oceans has reduced.

C.Scientists point to two reasons to expect a drop in ocean oxygen.

D.Fresh water's inpouring will make the water at the ocean's surface lighter.

E.Global warming has caused the reduction of the oxygen content of oceans worldwide.

F.If they are rights, we have every reason to worry about the major effect it has on sea life.

G.The light surface water will be less likely to sink so the deep ocean will get less oxygen.

  • 27、LAS VEGAS—It was different in the light of day.

There was no “pop, pop, pop” of gunfire, no screams. Just a quiet lot of cars abandoned by those, like Kassidy Owen, who escaped with their lives.

“It's strange to hear the silence” Owen said, “because all I remember was the noise”

The 22-year-old was one of dozens of concertgoers who returned to the scene of the Route 91 Harvest festival on Wednesday morning to fetch the vehicles they left behind as they fled from a gunman raining down bullets from high above in the tower of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino across the street.

Survivors of the deadly mass shooting in Las Vegas on Sunday needed their cars to move on with their lives-to get back to work, to school, home. It was the first time they were returning to a scene that would forever change them, when joy and celebration and music turned into killing and horror.

Before they could move forward, they had to go back to the place where they thought they were going to die.

Owen had run to her car to hide and had tried to drive away, but she couldn't. People were running, bodies dropped to the ground, and cars bottlenecked in the parking lot. During a brief pause after more than 10 minutes of gunfire, she worried the lights of her SUV made everyone inside a shining target.

“They're shooting again” her best friend's brother screamed. “Turn off the car!”

That's when she got out and fled.

“I just remember shutting the door and running.” Owen said.

Now, nearly three days later, she was back, sitting in the driver's seat of her SUV. Her eyes were swollen and red. This was a long way from over.

“You just keep hearing the gunshots in your head,” Owen said.

【1】Why did Kassidy Owen return to the scene of terror?

A.To get back her car for daily life.

B.To show sympathy to the victims.

C.To search for her missing friends.

D.To look into the cause of the shooting.

【2】What does “cars bottlenecked in the parking lot” in Paragraph 7 mean?

A.Cars were abandoned in the parking lot.

B.The parking lot was jammed with cars.

C.The parking lot was covered with broken bottles.

D.Cars broke down in the parking lot.

【3】Why did Owen keep hearing the gunshots in her head?

A.Because she had escaped being caught.

B.Because she wanted to find the gunman.

C.Because she couldn't rid herself of those terrible scenes.

D.Because she had saved others' lives by turning off the car.

【4】What is talked about in the news story?

A.Survivors went back to where they would die.

    B.Owen's experience in Las Vegas.

C.How to survive in a mass shooting.

D.People returned to the unforgettable scene.

  • 28、Napoleon, as a character in Tolstoy’s War and Peace, is more than once described as having “fat little hands”. Nor does he “sit well or firmly on the horse”. He is said to be “undersized”, with “short legs” and a “round stomach”. The issue here is not the accuracy of Tolstoy’s description-it seems not that far off from historical accounts but his choice of facts: other things that could be said of the man are not said. We are meant to understand the difference of a warring commander in the body of a fat little Frenchman. Tolstoy’s Napoleon could be any man wandering in the streets and putting a little of powdered tobacco up his nose-and that is the point.

It is a way the novelist uses to show the moral nature of a character. And it turns out that, as Tolstoy has it, Napoleon is a crazy man. In a scene in Book Three of War and Peace, the wars having reached the critical year of 1812,Napoleon receives a representative from the Tsar (沙皇) ,who has come with peace terms. Napoleon is very angry: doesn’t he have more army? He, not the Tsar, is the one to make the terms. He will destroy all of Europe if his army is stopped. “That is what you will have gained by engaging me in the war!” he shouts. And then, Tolstoy writes, Napoleon “walked silently several times up and down the room, his fat shoulders moving quickly".

Still later, after reviewing his army amid cheering crowds, Napoleon invites the shaken Russian to dinner. “He raised his hand to the Russian’s face,” Tolstoy writes, and "taking him by the ear pulled it gently. . . ". To have one’s ear pulled by the Emperor was considered the greatest honor and mark of favor at the French court. “Well, well, why don’t you say anything?” said he, as if it was ridiculous in his presence to respect any one but himself, Napoleon.

Tolstoy did his research, but the composition is his own.

【1】Tolstoy’s description of Napoleon in War and Peace is__________.

    A. far from the historical facts

    B. based on the Russian history

    C. based on his selection of facts

    D. not related to historical details

【2】 Tolstoy intended to present Napoleon as a man who is__________.

    A. ill-mannered in dealing with foreign guests

    B. fond of showing off his iron will

    C. determined in destroying all of Europe

    D. crazy for power and respect

【3】 What does the last sentence of the passage imply?

    A. A writer doesn’t have to be faithful to his findings.

    B. A writer may write about a hero in his own way.

    C. A writer may not be responsible for what he writes.

    D. A writer has hardly any freedom to show his feelings.

  • 29、An international team of researchers from Sweden and the UK have developed an innovative way of interpreting biological signals produced by our skin. Using data obtained from a Philips wrist-worn wearable sensor device that can also measure movement, the researchers’ system displays information in the form of colourful spiral graphics (螺旋图形) in real time on a smartphone, as well as a recording of data, for the wearer to interpret and reflect on.

The prototype (雏形) visualisation system, called ‘Affective Health’, was developed by experts in Human-Computer Interaction looking into how new and emerging computer technologies can be used to design engaging visualisations on smartphones.

A study group of 23 people were given the Affective Health prototype to use for a month. Importantly, the researchers purposely did not tell the participants what the devices were useful for. Instead, they gave guidelines that Affective Health could collect information relating to both physical and emotional reactions, how increased sweating increased the conductivity, and how this was represented by different colours. The participants were left to decide the best ways of using the technology.

The researchers found that this open design stage of the study led to some participants using the system as a tool to measure and help manage their stress levels. While others, including outstanding athletes, used the device to get information on their training and recovery programmes. Other uses included logging information on their lives and tracking emotions. But interestingly, few would use the technology for more than one purpose.

Although the open design phase helped reveal several different practices Affective Health prototypes could be used for, the prototype lacked some of the functions needed to make it a good tool for a specific role—such as a sports training system, or as a stress management tool. The researchers found the need for a second, more tailored step in the design process to make devices specific to particular roles.

【1】What were the participants unaware of about the prototype?

A.Its function as a measuring tool.

    B.Its reactions to physical activity.

    C.Its colourful spiral graphics.

    D.Its specified uses.

    【2】What interested the researchers?

A.People used the device quite differently.

B.Few used the device to help better themselves.

    C.Many considered the device a single-purpose tool.

D.Many purposely avoided the device’s certain functions.

【3】What can be learned about Affective Health?

A.It has a rising market share.

    B.It causes trouble for users.

    C.It lacks competitiveness.

    D.It needs improvement.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

    A.Sweat, a Mood Detector?

    B.Time to Reflect on Ourselves?

    C.Colourful Sensors Gain Popularity

D.Technologies Interpret Biodata from the Skin
