26、Louis Armstrong had two famous nicknames. Some people called him Bagamo. They said his mouth looked like a large bag. Musicians often called him Pops, as a sign of respect for his influence on the world of music.
Born in 1901 in New Orleans, he grew up poor, but lived among great musicians. Jazz was invented in the city a few years before his birth. Armstrong often said, “Jazz and I grew up together.”
Armstrong showed a great talent for music when he was taught to play the cornet (短号) at a boy’s home. In his late teens, Armstrong began to live the life of a musician. He played in parades, clubs, and on the steamboats that traveled on the Mississippi River. At that time, New Orleans was famous for the new music of jazz and was home to many great musicians. Armstrong learned from the older musicians and soon became respected as their equal. In 1922 he went to Chicago. There, the tale of Louis Armstrong begins. From then until the end of his life, Armstrong was celebrated and loved wherever he went. Armstrong had no equal when it came to playing the American popular song.
His cornet playing had a deep humanity and warmth that caused many listeners to say,“Listening to Pops just makes you feel good all over.” He was the father of the jazz style and also one of the best-known and most admired people in the world. His death, on July 6, 1971, was headline news around the world.

27、What do you imagine when you think of a forest? You probably imagine a vast area of land covered with trees. But as many traditional forests are destroyed, tiny forests — some as small as a tennis court — have sprung up (涌现) in cities around the world. 【1】.
These mini forests are inspired by Akira Miyawaki, a botanist, or plant scientist from Japan who pioneered a special way of growing forests. 【2】 It involves planting a wide variety of native trees close together and leaving them to grow into a forest. Miyawaki has planted more than 1,000 of these in Japan and other countries.
The Miyawaki method is said to grow trees 10 times faster than other methods. 【3】That's according to a 2018 study by Wageningen University, in the Netherlands. The study says the diversity of tree species attracts a greater variety of insects looking for food and shelter.
【4】 Boomforest is an organization in Paris, France. It planted two forests using the Japanese botanist's method. The group also teaches people how they can grow their own mini forests. In the Netherlands, IVN Nature Education has helped communities build 100 forests using the Miyawaki method. The group also educates kids about tiny forests.
Simon Lewis, a professor of global change science at University College London, is excited about tiny forests. He explains that it's important to grow trees because they absorb carbon dioxide. 【5】 He hopes more people will use the Miyawaki method to plant mini forests.
A.It plans to double that number by 2022.
B.The Miyawaki method has become popular in Europe.
C.They're increasing biodiversity (生物多样性) and fighting climate change.

G.And these tiny forests are more bio-diverse than traditional forests.
28、A computer programme can identify breast cancer from routine scans with greater accuracy than human experts. Researchers said that could prove a breakthrough in the fight against the global killer.
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women, and regular screening is key to discovering signs of the disease in patients before they show obvious symptoms. In Britain, women over 50 are advised to get a mammogram, an X-ray picture of the breast, every three years, and the results are analyzed by two independent experts. But interpreting the scans leaves room for error, and a small percentage of all mammograms either return a false positive—misdiagnosing(误诊) a healthy patient as having cancer-or false negative—missing the disease as it spreads.
Now researchers have trained an artificial intelligence(AI)model to detect cancer in breast scans from thousands of women in Britain and the US. The images had already been reviewed by doctors in real life, but unlike in a clinical setting, the machine had no patient history to inform its diagnosis.
The team found that their AI model could predict breast cancer from the scans with a similar accuracy level to expert radiographers(放射技师). Further, the ad showed a reduction in the cases where cancer was incorrectly identified — 5.7 percent in the US and 1.2 percent in Britain, respectively. It also reduced the percentage of missed diagnosed by 9.4 percent among US patients and by 2.7 percent in Britain.
“Application of AI is definitely great progress for the field. We think about this technology in a way that enabled an expert, or a patient finally, to get the best outcome from whatever diagnosed they've had.” said Dominic King, leader of the research group. “There's an opportunity to perfect the existing service by comparing the computer's decision with that of the first human reviewer to test his diagnosis. If the two agreed, the case was marked as reliable. That could also save the workload for another doctor.”
【1】What can we infer about mammogram from Paragraph 2?
A.It is carried out by two independent experts.
B.It is a must for all women over fifty in Britain.
C.It has proved a breakthrough in detecting cancer.
D.It plays a key role in identifying breast cancer earlier.
【2】How is Paragraph 4 mainly developed?
A.By giving examples.
B.By making comparisons.
C.By following time order.
D.By analyzing causes and results.
【3】What does Dominic King advise?
A.Reducing the workload of medical staff.
B.Training more experts to use all technology.
C.Using the AI technology as a second opinion.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

29、It was mid-afternoon. I looked outside my dorm window, and saw the lifeless gray sky, the snow and the trackless sidewalks. There was no one in the snow but a squirrel. The brown-gray North American squirrel,a look of terror in his shining eyes, braved the cold to throw himself over snow. In his mouth was a large acorn(橡实)—I was surprised it fit in his mouth.
I moved closer to my window, outside of which is a medium-sized tree, lacking its warm-weather leaves. The squirrel ran up rapidly, higher and higher in the tree, and his small body held onto his dear acorn.
Up he went, to the tip of one of the highest branches. I held my breath—I wondered if that slender branch could support him. I wondered if his winter food store was in this tree—squirrels are known to hide their nuts, mushrooms, and vegetation high up in trees. Outside, the squirrel firmly grasped that branch, jaw clamping(夹紧)on his acorn.
Then came the wind blowing violently, shaking the tree, the branch and the squirrel. He hung on for dear life, and both arms wrapped around the branch in the wind. I held my breath: If he fell from a height like this, then.... Seeing this little squirrel, I had my heart in my mouth. As the wind became stronger, the squirrel’s precious acorn fell to the ground. The squirrel followed its downward progress only by sight—if he let go the branch, he would fall downwards as well. I was so nervous that I didn’t take my gaze off the squirrel for one minute. Surprisingly, he then climbed down the tree and was now half-buried in the snow, searching desperately for his acorn. Finally, he made it.
The brave animal is able to survive in nature all because of its desperate efforts. The same goes for us humans. We all work hard to survive, and this is the law of nature. So effort is not something special, but a matter for all living things to do to survive.

They issued a global recall on September 1, but it was taken merely as a suggestion and not seen as ________. Yet, earlier this month, the tech giant gave a stronger message to worldwide customers, saying all owners must stop using their Note 7s immediately.
Commercial forces encourage tech companies to push the envelope and produce new products every few months. Sometimes, a conflict of interests can occur. The greed for innovation has a funny way of causing ________ for the basics-like safety-and the Note7's situation is just one example of this. The device ________ all kinds of cool features, including a super-high-resolution camera, an iris scanner and an especially powerful ________. Ideally, manufacturers should consider all relevant aspects when creating new commodities. Samsung has both the money and technical know-how to prevent such negligence. The Note7's ________ was most likely rushed in order to make more profit, which ________ having the opposite effect. Time will tell how much this oversight will cost with respect to Samsung' fame and future.
________, it' s safe to assume that Samsung could eventually come back over the horizon and restore its reputation as a manufacturer of excellent smartphones if its new models have no major flaw.
