When you know how to read body language, you can know how to use it to build trust. You can consciously use nonverbal cues (非语言暗示) that indicate you’re being open and honest. You can also avoid the cues that imply you’re distracted, dishonest, or hiding something

Get your point across in the right way

  • 27、   It is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams, the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life, but manners on the road are becoming horrible. Everybody knows that the nicest man would become fierce tigers behind the wheel. It is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the driver’s seat is another matter.

Road politeness is not only good manners, but a good sense. It takes the most cool-headed drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat back when forced to face rude driving. On the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarrelling and fighting. A friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of good will and becomes so necessary in modern traffic conditions. But such behavior of politeness is anything but enough. Many drivers nowadays don’t even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it.

However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous. A typical example is the driver who waves a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may not be able to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they want to.

An experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in a traffic stream without causing total blockages that give rise to unpleasant feelings. Unfortunately, modern drivers can’t even learn to drive, let alone master the roadmanship(公路驾车技能). Years ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give-and-take(互谅互让)from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.

1The passage mainly talks about _________.

    A.traffic jams B.good manners C.road politeness D.modern drivers

2Troubles on the road are often caused by _________.

A.traffic jams B.the behavior of the drivers

C.the great speed of modern life D.terrible road conditions

3What does the underlined word “anything but” in the second paragraph mean?

    A.in no way B.by coincidence C.in particular D.in effect

4It is not always right for drivers to _________.

    A.master the roadmanship

B.neglect politeness when they see it

C.give a friendly nod in answer to an act of politeness

D.encourage old ladies to cross the road whenever and wherever they want to

  • 28、On James Owen’s 70th birthday, he saw a video of himself walking slowly to the podium (讲台) where he was giving a talk. his feet hardly off the ground. “I looked like an old man. said Owen, who built a successful career on Wall Street. Even worse. he felt like an old man.

He was about 25 pounds overweight and he had chronic trouble with his back knees, and shoulders. But instead of giving in to age, Owen decided to set an ambitious five-year goal: He wanted to be pain-free,and he decided the way to get there was through exercise-even though at the time he couldn’t do a single push-up.

Owen began his new exercise plan by walking, though he started huffing and huffing after five minutes. But that didn’t discourage him. He kept at the walks every day, along with some stretching. Once he had those basics down, he started weight lifting and hired a personal trainer to teach him and design a routine he could follow on his own. The last piece was finding other activities he enjoyed, which turned out to be cycling and swimming.

In less than five years, Owen was able to do three sets of 50 push-ups each and walk for miles each day. And yes, he was free of aches and pains. “Aging well is only about 20 to 25 percent genes, and the rest is lifestyle,” he says.

Owen used his experience to write a book called Just Move:A New Approach to Fitness After 50, in which he details how older adults can safely get off the couch and add more movement to their lives. “Think of it as movement, not exercise, just get started,” he says. “The key is slow and steady progress.”

Now 81 and retired, Owen exercises an hour a day, six days a week. “It is the best investment I’ve ever made in my life,” he says.

【1】Why did Owen decide to set a five-year goal?

    A.To keep healthy.

    D.To give a talk.

【2】How can Owen’s exercising process be described?

    A.Tough and discouraging.

    B.Boring and painstaking.

    C.Slow but productive.

    D.complex but ineffective.

D.Lifestyle is vital for one’s health

  • 29、In some countries, open campus (校园) is widely accepted. For example, French students have a two-hour lunch break from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. During their lunch break, they can eat at home or at a restaurant. But students in the Philippines have a tougher schedule. They have only two 15-minute breaks and an hour for lunch.

What Schedule would be best for American schools?

Having breaks between classes is great, but having breaks off campus is even better. There are several advantages to open campus, including simple conveniences such as being able to eat different meals during lunchtime, rather than having the cafeteria (自助食堂) dishes, as well as having the chance to take a break at home.

However, there are more reasons I disagree with allowing high school students the right to have an open campus. Sure, it’s great being able to escape school during the day for a while, but soon enough that may easily become the rest of the day.

If open campus is allowed, it is very possible that such freedom will make it all too easy for students to skip their afternoon classes. Of course, there will be students responsible enough to come back to school.

But unexpected problems such as heavy traffic, city bus delays (延迟) or cars breaking down may prevent them from returning to school. It benefits the students to stay in school during lunch hours to avoid transportation issues.

Depending on how close the school is to restaurants and students’ homes, open campus could be a great idea. Unfortunately, though, most public schools in America are not located close enough to restaurants or students’ homes, thus causing the negative results to outweigh (超过) the positives in the end.

【1】Compared with French students, students in the Philippines   .

    A.have a poor diet B.get better grades

C.have less freedom D.prefer eating on campus

【2】In the author’s opinion, open campus will probably   .

    A.lead to heavy traffic

    B.cause students to cut school

    C.attract more students to school

    D.increase students’ sense of responsibility

【3】What can we learn from the text about most American public schools?

    A.They have a two-hour lunch break.

B.They allow students to eat outside.

C.They plan to have open campus.

D.They are far from students’ homes.

【4】The text mainly discusses whether high schools should   .

    A.have a strict schedule

    B.have a long lunch break

    C.have open campus for lunch

    D.be located close to restaurants

  • 32、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Last December, Alvin Bamburg, 66, was deep in the woods in Grand Cane, Louisiana, when something caught his eye. As Alvin approached, he saw that the object was a broken balloon. Attached was a piece of paper decorated with sparkly star stickers. It was a child’s Christmas wish list.

“Dear Santa,” the handwritten note read. “My name is Luna. I am four years old. I live in Liberal, Kansas. This year I have been nice. I would like candy, Spider-Man ball, Frozen doll, puppy, My Little Pony. With love, Luna.”

Alvin’s heart hammered in his chest. Ever since he was a child, he had dreamed of this very scene. He believed this was his childhood wish coming true. And he knew he was going to make Luna’s wish come true too. He just wasn’t sure how.

Liberal is more than 650 miles from Grand Cane. But Alvin’s wife was not held back by the distance. As a passionate Facebook user, she had seen people find all sorts of connections through the site and thought it might help her husband find Luna.

Alvin posted a photo of the balloon and the Christmas list on his Facebook page, asking for help locating the sender. At first, he wasn’t confident it would work. But as he saw the number of people sharing his post creep into the hundreds, his hope grew into expectation.

Meanwhile, Leticia Flores, the mother of four-year old Luna had no idea that such an effort was underway. It had been a hard year for Leticia and her girl. As Covid-19 spread, the family felt lonely, scared and isolated. On a particularly tough day last December, Leticia came up with the idea of having the girl send a letter to Santa by balloon.

One day in early January, Leticia noticed that a friend had been calling her all morning. When Leticia finally called her back, the friend blurted, “Someone found Luna’s balloon.”
