  • 26、Promotion at work can be good for the pocket. However,it can also be very risky for a person's mental health, according to British researchers from the University of Warwick in Coventry.

The new findings go strongly against the common belief that advancement in a career can result in better health because of an increased sense of selfconfidence, life control and overall wellbeing(幸福感 ).“Getting a promotion at work is  not as great as many people may think. Our research finds that the  mental health of managers typically deteriorates after a job promotion and goes beyond merely a shortterm change in a way,”said Chris Boyce, the researcher of the University of Warwick. He  also added  that  they could  not find any health  benefits  in individuals who had had job promotions.Instead, these people  don't go to hospital to have health checks as often as they should, which may be something to worry about rather than celebrate.

To find out whether there is a connection between job  advancement and physical health,Boyce and his team used data  from the British Household Panel Survey. The data contained  information on nearly 1,000 recently promoted individuals in the  United Kingdom. And the data contained information on many  aspects of life, including work and selfreported health. After analyzing all the available information, they discovered that there was no evidence of improved physical health after a job promotion.

However, what the researchers did find was evidence of  greater mental stress. The experts found that promotion gives  people,on average,10 percent more mental stress and up to 20 percent less time to visit their doctors in the event of illness.Matt  Smith,a Scottish health expert, said mental stress is caused by working long hours. He said,“When someone is promoted there  might be even more pressure to work longer hours and therefore they can't afford the time to care about their health.”

1According to the text we can learn that work promotion________.

    A. is traditionally believed to be harmful to people's health

    B. decreases people's selfconfidence and happiness

    C. gives people more chances to have health checks

    D. can help raise people's income to some extent

2The underlined word “deteriorates” in the second paragraph means “becomes___”.

    A. satisfying   B. doubtful

    C. optimistic   D. worse

3What do we know from Boyce's research?

    A. It analyzed many aspects of the promoted individuals' lives.

    B. It surveyed 1,000 people in the world.

    C. It showed how people gained work promotion.

    D. It proved that work promotion may lead to a shortterm change in health.

4From the last paragragh we can learn that________.

    A. people who are promoted suffer from increased mental stress

    B. the work after promotion will take up 20 percent of people's leisure time

    C. promoted individuals tend to pay more attention to their health

    D. poor health condition makes promoted individuals feel stressed

5What is the best title for this text?

    A. Work Promotion Helps Increase SelfConfidence.

    B. Work Promotion Is Actually Bad for One's Health.

    C. Work Promotion Means Having to Work Harder.

    D. Work Promotion Brings Wealth and Health.

  • 27、Moments before I could lift my case to put it in the plane’s overhead locker ahead of our recent holiday to Europe, my father gently urged me to stop. He held the thick handles of the case and lifted it with his thin arms, pushing it into place with a sigh. “You should relax and be the lady, and let me do the heavy tasks,” he said seriously. “In the future, someone special will come into your life and take over such tasks from me, but that will never happen if you do everything yourself.”

I was stunned into silence. This was not the father I remembered from childhood, who trained me to study hard at school, asked me to earn my own pocket money as a teenager at a local coffee shop, and even taught me household chores so that my life alone in London wouldn’t turn into a mess. But then, eight years after I left home and started a new life in the UK, I realized for the first time that my dad still has expectations for me to be like a princess and to stay dependent and delicate, which were considered necessary qualities of women in traditional China.

Well, that came a little late, Little did Dad know that over the three years of my university life, I moved flats five times all by myself, dragging suitcases of books and clothes, and waiting for the taxi in the rain while holding tight onto cardboard boxes. Meanwhile, living in the UK – a country currently led by a female prime minister – I have never thought there is anything girls cannot do. Most of my female friends are professionals working in the City of London, and after work, we frequently go down to the pub for a drink, just like the guys do – something my mother never did.

I wondered how I might make Dad understand the new world his little girl has entered. Perhaps one day, he will realize the “someone special” in my life will appreciate my confidence and independence above dependence, and admit that times have changed.

1What does the underlined word “stunned” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A. Annoyed.   B. Embarrassed.

    C. Surprised   D. Excited.

2What qualities of women did traditional China appreciate according to Paragraph 2?

    A. Dependent and gentle.   B. Hardworking and tough.

    C. Beautiful and confident.   D. Independent and ambitious.

3What’s the author’s purpose by mentioning her stay in London?

    A. To complain how strict her father was.

    B. To describe how hard her life in the UK was.

    C. To regret not working hard enough at school.

    D. To show she was used to living independently.

4What can we infer about the author according to the last paragraph?

    A. She has a misunderstanding of her father.

    B. She thinks women should be independent.

    C. She longs to meet her life partner in the UK.

    D. She is thankful for her father’s strict training.

  • 28、It’s wonderful to have a relaxing bath in mineral water while looking out over beautiful scenery. If you live in the US or are planning a visit, consider going to one of the two natural hot springs (温泉) in the western US:

    Travertine Hot Springs

At the edge of the Sierra Nevada Mountains near Bridgeport, California lie the Travertine Hot Springs. The orange, green, and red rocks and the mountains create beautiful views for you to enjoy while you bathe. Each pool is a different temperature, so you can find one that’s comfortable for you. These springs can easily be reached by car. Take Route 395 south from Bridgeport and turn left onto Jack Sawyer Road. In about a mile you’ll arrive at the springs. If you like to camp, you can camp along Jack Sawyer Road.

    Bagby Hot Springs

In the middle of an ancient forest you’ll find the Bagby Hot Springs. At the springs there are wooden bathhouses, with both private baths and communal baths. Through a system of pipes the spring water is brought to the baths at a temperature of 136 degrees Fahrenheit. If that’s too hot buckets of cold water are also available to mix into the bathtub (浴缸) or to cool off with after your bath.

The Bagby Springs are about 45 minutes from Estacada, Oregon, on Highway 224. To get to the bathhouse there is a 1.5-mile walk from the parking lot through the beautiful Mt. Hood National Forest. While in the area, make sure to visit Portland, which is known for its coffee, restaurants, and music.

The best time to visit the two hot springs is in late spring, or in summer or fall. While in the area, check out the Curecanti National Recreation Area, where you can enjoy canoeing, fishing, bird watching, camping, and hiking.

  • 29、   An invention to tackle canal plastics pollution was one of the highlights of the recent Amsterdam International Water Week.

The instrument, named"the great Bubble barrier" is a bubble screen that will remove plastic trash from the canals and therefore prevent it from flowing through to the river IJ and the North Sea.

“This is a very important step in reducing the amount of plastic in the oceans,”co-inventor Philip Ehrhorn said “It is a lot easier to stop it at an earlier stage instead of in the ocean.”

The tool works as follows. By pumping air through a tube with holes in it, which is located on the bottom of a waterway, a bubble barrier appears. This creates an upward thrust, which brings waste to the surface of the water.

By placing it diagonally in the waterway, the barrier uses the natural current to guide the plastic to the catchment system at the riverside. Both ships and fish can pass through the Bubble Barrier, but plastic will be stopped.

The invention's origins go back around four years, when Dutch students Saskia Studer, Anne Marieke Eveleens and Francis Zoet looked at the bubbles of a beer glass in a bar and thought they should do something similar. Ehrhorn, a German student, had the same idea. After he found out about the plans of the three Dutch women, they decided to join forces in Amsterdam.

“It is the first step of many”, Ehrhorn continued on the project. “First, the different rivers and canals in the Netherlands-cities, industrial areas, ports. In the following years ,we will go to the rest of Europe, Asia and elsewhere.”

“We have learned to live with water and have built a thriving society.”Nijhof said.

    1What's a bubble barrier?

D.We can do nothing with sea waste.

3Which paragraphs describe the barrier's working principle?

    A.Paragraph 1&2. B.Paragraph 2&3.

    C.Paragraph 3&4. D.Paragraph 4&5.

4Which might be the best title of Paragraph 2&3 of the passage?

    A.Plastic becomes easier to remove.

B.An action to remove the plastic.
