二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   In fifth grade, on a merry New York City day, my classmates spread across our raggedy classroom carpet. Our teacher had us practicing holiday songs for the upcoming winter show, and with holiday seasonal passion we sang. When we came to one of the Hanukkah (a Jewish festival) songs, a few classmates and I got up and started dancing. We flew around the classroom laughing, our movements becoming irregular as the song progressed. Then one boy stood up and said something along the lines of, “Stop! You’re making fun of Jewish people!”

Our student-teacher stopped the song. The boy looked at us angrily as the student-teacher began to lecture us on our behavior. How we were being disrespectful to the boy’s culture — how the dancing was wrong. I was surprised at the outburst and, as a Jewish person myself, did not understand why the boy was offended, or why I was in trouble. I was embarrassed and made to feel disrespected my own culture.

At the beginning of middle school, with the Hanukkah song incident still fresh in my mind, I began to interact more with my Jewish heritage(血统). I started going to Hebrew school. I carefully listened to prayers and committed them to memory. The legitimacy(正统) of my Jewish heritage was questioned by my peers, especially around the Jewish holidays. They would ask if I was “really Jewish,” as if there was a standard set of requirements I needed to meet. I didn’t have my Bat Mitzvah(犹太成人礼), so that meant I couldn’t be truly Jewish, they said. I asked myself if the accusations were true. It felt like I need to prove my Jewish-ness in some way. I began looking for ways to connect with and represent my Judaism.

When I walked into a store in December, I noticed the abundance of Christmas items, and lack of Hanukkah pieces. Maybe there would be a menorah(烛台) in storefronts, or a few dreidels(陀螺) and chocolate gold coins, if I was lucky. Instead of feeling left out or ignored, I started to make a game out of it. In high school, I would walk the streets of the city and peer into store windows, marking down all the Hanukkah related things I discovered.

1Why did the class sing the songs according to paragraph1?

A.To prepare for the coming performance.

B.To make the angry boy happy.

C.To celebrate a traditional Jewish festival.

D.To respond to the happy dancers.

2What did the author experience during her middle school?

    A.racial discrimination.

    B.identity question.

    C.culture attack.

    D.criminal charges.

3How did the author do to prove she’s a true Jew?

A.She opened a store to sell Hanukkah items.

B.She searched for the things related to her own culture.

C.She advocated her own culture and made it known to more.

D.She requested to have a bat mitzvah in front of her classmates.

4Which of the following can best describe the author?

    A.optimistic and considerate

    B.sensitive and ambitious

    C.intelligent and delicate

    D.conventional and practical

  • 27、While we may think it feels good to complain, complaining has some bad effects associated with it.

Why isn't complaining beneficial? Research shows that it connects our brain with negativity. The brain is designed to work efficiently. This means that when we repeat a thought, negative or positive, the nerve cells form a bridge between each other to pass information in a higher speed. Therefore, the next time we have a similar type of thought, it is more easily passed. This explains why certain thought patterns become habits.

Yet the harmful effects don't stop there. A study shows that complaining causes the hippocampus (海马区), which plays a vital role in problem-solving, to become smaller. In addition to causing brain damage, complaining also releases a stress hormone: cortisol, a kind of chemical the body produces when we meet with some danger. Constantly having a high level of cortisol results in high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and lower immunity.

The ill effects of our complaining aren't just limited to ourselves: they also involve those around us. We tend to mirror the moods of our friends. For this reason, we should be cautious about having stubborn complainers in our circle of acquaintances and companions.

The best way to deal with constant negativity is to develop a sense of gratitude. Just like complaining acts as a poison, gratitude acts as a medicine. Research shows it lowers cortisol levels by 23 percent, as well as reduces blood pressure and blood sugar. It also decreases tiredness and depression. Gratitude is the perfect cure for complaining, a behavior that steals our brain power, happiness and physical well-being.

What have you observed about the effects of complaining in your own life or in the lives of others? Have you noticed that when you are grateful, you feel better all over? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below.

【1】What do paragraphs 2-3 mainly talk about?

A.The bad effects of complaining on brain power.

B.The decrease of a vital part of our brain.

    C.The diseases caused by complaining.

D.The reason why certain thought patterns become habits.

【2】What can we know about cortisol from the passage?

A.Gratitude functions as an effective cure for cortisol.

B.Having a high level of cortisol can lead to many health problems.

C.Our body produces cortisol when we feel excited.

D.Cortisol is a chemical that can cause brain damage.

【3】What attitude does the writer take to stubborn complainers?

    A.Indifferent.

    B.Neutral.

    C.Skeptical.

    D.Disapproving.

【4】What is the purpose of the writer?

A.To encourage readers to share ideas.

    B.To introduce different emotions.

C.To analyze the reasons for complaining.

D.To inform readers the effects of complaining.

  • 28、The books we read when we’re young have a special sort of power: they can inspire us to be brave and resilient (Matilda by Roald Dahi), take us on thrilling adventures (Divergent by Veronica Roth) and even introduce us to tragedy (The Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson). They’re as formative as anything else in our young lives, and sometimes they’re the first place we encounter larger-than-life ideas. Consider the lasting cultural import of To Kill a Mockingbird or even the urgency of a newer best seller like I’ll Give You the Sun, Jandy Nelson’s 2014 novel centering on a contradictory issue. In The Magic Words, Cheryl B. Klein, an executive editor at Scholastic whose projects include the last two Harry Potter books, sets out to inform would-be writers on how great novels for young readers work.

The market for YA novels is booming: sales in the children’s and YA sector have been neck and neck with those of adult books in recent years, and adult authors, including Meg Wolitzer (Belzhar) and Carl Hiaasen (Razor Girl), are getting in on the phenomenon. Magic Words aims to be a master class. If you think it sounds silly, it isn’t. In the era of elevated self-help sensations like Marie Kondo and Breníé Brown, The Magic Words is of a piece.

Klein deconstructs the seemingly obvious clear plotlines, sympathetic characters to reveal the technical intricacies of some beloved classics. L. M. Montgomery surely didn’t whip up Anne of Green Gables as a cash-in endeavor. But for those who want to capitalize, Anne is instructive: what’s timeless and broadly appealing about Anne - her teenage heart and impulses——is what to examine. Once you understand that. Klein encourages you to get personal: What makes you ideal to write your story? And what does it mean to the reader?

On the latter question, The Magic Words is more than a handbook. It is also a timely social commentary on the responsibility YA writers have to young adults. Those who write to a younger demographic must start with an awareness of their readers——not only their age but also how they might connect with the issues, both the mundane bullies and the cultural tolerance that characters face. The narratives we tell young readers can influence how they understand and value the world around them. The magic isn’t in the words: it’s in how the words come together to reflect and affirm the realities of a diverse young-adult experience.

【1】According to the first paragraph, it can be learned that ________.

A.The Bridge to Terabithia can inspire us to be brave and resilient

C.Adult authors are getting in the field of YA novels.

D.The market for YA novels is booming.

  • 29、Winter solstice(冬至), an important solar term in the traditional Chinese calendar, as the name implies, means the coming of winter. It generally occurs between December 21st and 23rd. On this day, in the Northern Hemisphere the period of daytime is the shortest of the year and the period of night is the longest.
